Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Lol they admit to it and then point the finger at the Yankees. The Red Sox responded in kind on Tuesday, filing a complaint against the Yankees, claiming that the team uses a camera from its television network, YES, exclusively to steal signs during games.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I'm guessing nothing will come of this even though they admitted to it?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I'm guessing nothing will come of this even though they admitted to it? I'm sure they will get fined at least and will lose a pick or something one would hope.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 There should absolutely be a fairly significant penalty for this. I don't care if the player at 2nd relays signs to the hitter, that's fair game imo. But using non-players to relay it is way too far, especially when you start talking about the replay operators or TV networks.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Not a big deal. It's stealing f***ing signs.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Not a big deal. It's stealing f***ing signs. Okay, let's take it to the next logical step. Let's say they embedded a little speaker in the helmet, and the TV crew relayed exactly what pitch was coming to the batter? I mean, that's a step further, but it's the same line of thinking. As I said, the player at 2nd relaying the pitch to the batter is one thing, but using other people not on the field to do it is quite another.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2017 Author Posted September 5, 2017 Not a big deal. It's stealing f***ing signs. I disagree. Stealing signs is fine with me until teams start using technology to do it.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 The way to deal with it is use technology to relay pitch selection, not hand signals.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Everyone at this level is going to try to do this kinda stuff and I kinda applaud the Sox for being so clever, but they look like total asshats for the way they've responded to this. They get caught red handed so they immediately (and childishly) throw a complaint right back at the Yankees. Based on what? Then they say that NONE OF THE COACHES, INCLUDING FARRELL, KNEW. Give me a f***ing break. People surely can't be dumb enough to believe that, right? All the players knew, all the trainers knew, the FO knew but nope, Farrell had no idea. I mean, I know he's not exactly brilliant but give me a break.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I disagree. Stealing signs is fine with me until teams start using technology to do it. Not only that, it's actually very hard to steal signs from second. Catchers change their indicators throughout the game, they don't just hold down a 1 and point to the outer corner lol. Runners will signal where the catcher is setting up on the plate all the time (which is why some catchers including Martin will often jump from one side to the other as a decoy) but relaying actual signs is not as easy as just being on second. Technology on the other hand you can monitor there signs throughout the game, have an accurate first hand of what's coming and with a little ingenuity find a way to relay that to the player.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Grant is loving this right now. Took the words right out of my mouth. I'm surprised he hasn't come out of the woodwork for this.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 So if John Farrell truly didn't know his coaching staff was stealing signs (a laughable premise, but let's go with this)... then shouldn't he have them all fired immediately? That would be an unspeakable breach of trust and professionalism.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I know there are plenty of Cameron haters here, but this is funny: Bork 12:05 Heyman thinks the Red Sox should forfeit all their wins against the Yankees this year. What's your hot take on punishment for the Red Sox? Dave Cameron 12:05 They should be forced to connect to an internet that only has Jon Heyman columns on it.

In all reality, I think the team should be fined and the personnel involved (video room guy and whoever was on the bench relaying them at minimum) should get a 1-year ban from baseball or something.
M.E. Verified Member Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 On MLB radio, I heard there was a memo put out to teams in 2010 specifically banning this sort of thing. At first i thought no big deal and I continue to think about it I have pushed more extreme and call for a post season ban.
