Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Baseball is cool: He homered on that night. I was there!
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 That would be a truly awful OF. If anything, Pillar, Alford and Hernandez will be by far the most athletic outfield we've had in some time.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 This Chris Henderson guy probably should stop writing about baseball http://jaysjournal.com/2017/07/31/blue-jays-aoki-is-a-great-get-for-a-rental-liriano/
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Nice move.. Worse case, I wouldn't mind watching an outfield of Pillar, Alford and Hernandez next year. Athletic as f***. Yup. Hernandez 25 Alford 23 and old man Pillar at 29 A welcome change to see guys in the outfield all in their 20's for 2018. Based on this year we'll take it.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Where does Pearce play? If Morales is still with the team in 2018, Pearce likely is the everyday LF I would imagine (unless he's traded). If Morales is moved, Pearce would become the everyday DH.

Cleveland Steamer Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Teoscar Hernandez reminds me of George Springer.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Not a bad take today on both trades, very well done Shatkins! *golf claps*
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Pretty happy with the trades, wouldn't be suprised if Liriano got it together out of the pen either.

I kinda hope they try and bring back Liriano for next year. Preferably in a relief/spot start role though. I think he'd be a good fit in that role if the Jays can put together a stronger starting 5 for 2018.

I'm not even opposed to him as a starter, on a one year deal (but obviously at much less than he's making this year). We really, really need at least one solid to high end SP this offseason, and there aren't many really good options. Arrieta, Darvish, and Otani are probably the big three (I don't think Tanaka will opt out). A guy like Estrada or Liriano would make a good 5th starter.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 liriano would scare the crap out me in the pen...you just never know what you're going to get...3 strike outs..or three walks. He could catch fire, but I won't miss him
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Are we really talking about an aoki, Hernandez and pillar outfield moving forward ? My f*** we play in the al east. It was a great trade by Atkins and a great example of asset management but come on

It was a great trade by Atkins and a great example of asset management but come on I would expect more along the lines of Pillar, Hernandez/Pearce, and a FA. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Aoki move in August to a contender.

Cleveland Steamer Verified Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 He prefers to be called Teo. Pronounced Tay-Oh.

His age makes his likely cost not too scary imo. Just wish we could get rid of Morales to provide him some ABs at DH to sweeten our offer. Edited August 1, 2017 by THANOS

Just wish we could get rid of Morales to provide him some reps at DH to sweeten our offer. That's my #1 target if he's posted in the offseason. I think the Jays may be able to justify eating a decent chunk of Morales' contract with the thought of Otani basically being paid to fill two roster spots (pitch one day, DH 3-4 other days).

Assuming Bautista isn't back we've got quite a bit of payroll to play with ($41m coming off the books from Bautista, Estrada and Liriano). Otani would be amazing sign. Could fill the two biggest needs - a starter and an OF, haha. Realistically though, signing him as a starter would help to reinvigorate the atmosphere around the Jays.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 I expect this FO will make a play for Otani when he's posted.

For sure. This front office seems progressive enough to try it. Edited August 1, 2017 by THANOS
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Author Posted August 1, 2017 We'd have to overpay for Otani. The big teams will all make a play and we'd have to give him a reason to come to Toronto. I bet he doesn't even know this city exists.
