gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 With all the data we have on exit velocities, I find it hilarious that people still get mad at players for trying to hit the ball as hard as they can. Because why would you take a home run cut when you can hit a soft ground ball up the middle? Is it hard to argue the fact that base hits are more common than HR's? Is it hard to argue the fact that (especially vs Tanaka) that a hitter might want to go with an all hands type approach with two strikes with a RISP? Less than two strikes, take a rip sure. Nobody said to not try and hit the ball hard.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Judge is not the guy you want hitting against Grilli at this moment.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 The cross-up was real on that last pitch.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Had that happen to me way to many times while playing baseball...throws everybody off first lol Once saw a windmill pitcher have an 0-2 pitch stick to his hand and lob over the backstop, only to have the batter take a half hearted swing before jogging to first. Took the umps awhile to make the right call.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Grilli is going to get clobbered if he makes that pitch again.

King Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I don't give a s*** what the count is. Hit the ball hard and good things will happen. But yes Coach Gruber, you keep telling your kids team to hit a blooper over the 2B for a single. I bet you love to give the bunt sign!
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 These are some really dangerous pitches he's getting away with.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 You just knew that was going to happen. Grilli is throwing some serious garbage, that was like 5 consecutive pitches right down the pipe.

King Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 It's a real shame Judge wasn't aiming for a soft groundball to left field when he fell behind in the count there. What was he thinking?

King Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 It's utterly ridiculous to take a massive HR cut like that with two strikes and a runner on second, up by five runs. A base hit gets us a way ahead with one swing of the bat.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Author Posted May 3, 2017 5 of last 8 hits have been bombs, lol.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Judge trying for a slap single there maybe? That's for live game action....this is batting practice

You're right....Gwynn, Boggs, and Rod Carew had s***** careers playing the contact game.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Author Posted May 3, 2017 You're right....Gwynn, Boggs, and Rod Carew had s***** careers playing the contact game. C'mon man... Smoak isn't Gwynn/Boggs or Carew. Plus those guys hit the ball hard when possible.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 You know you can hit the ball hard for a base hit right? Yes, but your chances increase with a no stride all hands approach. I'm recommending this with two strikes and a RISP. Smoak is a big guy, so a HR is not off the table by any means, especially at Yankee Stadium. Miggy uses that approach pretty much all the time because he's still strong enough to hit 35+ HR a year regardless, they're just not tape measure shots. I'm not comparing Smoak to Miggy, but that approach (especially with two strikes) would help any hitter. The problem is players like Smoak get paid well enough to hit 20-25 HR's to go along with a .220 / .290 type slash line. It's pretty much an ALL ME type of approach, but that's jmo.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 C'mon man... Smoak isn't Gwynn/Boggs or Carew. Plus those guys hit the ball hard when possible. 2 strikes....shorten up the swing. Been happening for a hundred years.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Grilli is done I tend to agree. He has no command. There were 4 or 5 pitches that could have be hit out in that at bat.

You don't know jack s*** about me or how i coach, so i suggest you should tone your s*** down. Wow
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2017 Author Posted May 3, 2017 2 strikes....shorten up the swing. Been happening for a hundred years. Yup, for most hitters. Lots of ball players(power hitters) don't do it though.
wk680 Verified Member Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Loup looking pretty good - ERA down to 0.93 on the season now

He's admitted to "command issues and h knows what to do to fix it", according to Madani... was not the case tonight, obviously.
