BTS Community Moderator Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 I still don't think anyone would want to take on a 3/58 commitment after this season for what looks like a league-average player who will play all of next season at 33. What teams have the need and financial ability to throw that kind of money at average production? I don't see any.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 He also seems like the type who 1) hates being traded, and 2) doesn't mind being in a rebuilding situation (he seemed to like Colorado and helping the younger talent). Even if the Jays are stuck with him in a rebuilding phase, he might help the young players out. 1. Nope I think he'd welcome a trade to a West Coast team. 2. He wanted out of Colorado because he wants to play for a winner.

Not sure what Rogers views are on eating salary, but you if the jays are selling off pieces they could easily eat a large portion of the contract to maximize their return

Also an option. What teams might find themselves in need of a shortstop? The Pirates maybe? Darkhorse: the A's. I dunno, I think we'd have to eat a lot of cash in either case, though they certainly have the prospect capital. Especially Pittsburgh.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 There are 150 games left. Yeah I agree with you on the principle and would in theory support trading (for example) Tulo. But my main point is that the "core" is not just old players who will only get worse. There's lots of quality players that I'm optimistic about for at least the next few years. It's just too early to know for certain which is why we're having this debate. Age: Happ = 34 Estrada = 33 Martin = 33 JB = 36 JD = 31 Tulo = 32 Morales = 33 Obviously the entire team isn't over 30 and declining. But there are a lot of old big contract players and the deals that JB/EE had versus the value they were providing are no longer there. This is a team that is completely screwed short term, with no immediate help available and a very average minor league system that isn't even ready for a quick rebuild. We have to hope all our trade chips play to the highest level possible, and shapiro maximizes his return on every asset. Take a 3-5 year rebuild and come back with a new strong core.
wk680 Verified Member Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Did anyone listen to Shapiro on ATL? If you haven't I would listen to it as he talks for 45 Min about all sorts of topics. One of the interesting things he said was when building a team ideally want a good mix of young players coming into the league, veterans in their prime and older veterans but not too much of all 3. And that is the mix you want when you have sustained contention. Another interesting thing which I agree with is, small market clubs won't be able or at least have a very difficult time to field have a sustained winner and basically will have to have cycles in order to compete. Yes it was an interesting listen. He continues to insist that he is not making the player personnel decisions although he does not necessarily deny having the final say. A lot of corporate-like talk about him putting the right people in key positions and empowering them to do their thing. He had a chance to complain about the prior regime trading away too many top prospects when asked about how his vision for sustained success compares to the Jays' current situation. But he just said something about how they are building toward having that sustained flow of young players ready to break in to the majors. As far as cycles, I think even the big market teams will still have their down cycles. But they have more resources to retool and contend again faster. Question is whether the Jays will retool like a big market team or rebuild like a small market team. As is being discussed, it may be how they handle Donaldson will be an indication of their preferred approach. And not only whether they trade him or not, but who the players they get back are (i.e. how soon they are ready to contribute).

The Marlins potentially if they are in it by the ASB, but I do agree a trade isn't easy. I just think there are ways to get it done if a team does in fact end up wanting him.

In addition to the teams you mentioned maybe the Brewers or Marlins? We've got money and there's no need to completely be s***ing the bed the next few seasons so if we can't get anything for him maybe it's best to just hang on to him.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Tulo has a NTC so you're kinda stuck with the teams he would be willing to be traded to, and they may not want/need him. If he demands a trade, that's an easier way to facilitate a move, but even then, he has too many years and dollars in his 30's to be appealing to most teams. I could see him being moved with money eaten up but I wouldn't expect much back.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Lots of interesting articles today about the rebuild. Teams are scouting Stroman and an article about trading Smoak immediately
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Smoak & Stro get traded before AS break and the manager must now select someone to represent Toronto. Who would they pick? I'd say Osuna.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Stroman is the only one on the roster I want to keep tbh. Everybody else (including Sanchez) can be traded for prospects or mlb-ready guys. Of course teams are interested in StroShow 'cause he's the most valuable on our team.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Everyone (including Vladdy and Bo) should be available for the right offer. I guess, but in reality the only way the jays trade prospects now is if they get legit stars under team control back. Since that's incredibly unlikely, they really aren't available
