Gary Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 From John Heyman: sources: Jays and Bautista are talking about a 2-year deal
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Sweet Confirmatory Rosenthal credibility Tweet means it's probably a done deal already Terms are perfect if that's true
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 TheHurl already told us it's two years + a vesting option.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 You know what I bet Shapiro did some hard scouting around the league and probably the answer came back that no one was willing to surrender that draft pick, and that he was probably going to have to either take a really low dollar amount or sign in June.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 Either way we win. We don't give in to Bautista's initial ridiculous demands and we stay competitive for 2017
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 If it's as reported, will the people criticizing the FO for misreading the market for overcommitting by 1/11 to Morales praise the FO for expertly maneuvering the market by not giving Bautista 4/110 or something before the season?

Age + injured too much in 2016 + no longer an acceptable RF defender + unreasonable contract demands + draft pick comp + generally disliked player = we get him back on a nice short term deal cause no one else wanted to gamble Works for me
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 So is that 3WAR added or 2WAR ( Opportunity Cost Pompey 1 WAR)

Yes. Absolutely.

A reasonable person will say those two things even out of course

MLBTR predicted 3/51 Dave Cameron predicted 3/75 lmao
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Trumbo. Trumbo - 2.2 WAR in 159 games (667 PA's). Valbuena - 2 WAR in 90 games (342 PA's). Valbuena is a significantly better target.

They made the highest offer to Edwin and got Bautista on a reasonable two year deal when he apparently wanted 150m a year ago, and people will still call them cheap and claim they want to rebuild. Toronto fans are not the brightest.

That was a lot easier to read and a no brainer... but anything to make you feel good about the weak offseason.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 expertly maneuvering the market by not giving Bautista 4/110 or something before the season? you don't need to be an expert to decline that demand by Bautista
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 yeah - I don't think that's restricted to Toronto. People are dumb everywhere. True but Toronto fans, at least the ones that showed up only when the team made the playoffs, are insufferable. Unfortunately they seem to be the most vocal in the cesspool that is Twitter and other social media outlets.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 That was a lot easier to read and a no brainer... but anything to make you feel good about the weak offseason. You still consider it a weak offseason if this is true? - Bautista on a 2-year deal that's apparently lower than anyone would have expected entering the offseason - Pearce on a very cheap 2-year deal - Gurriel on a cheap 7-year deal - Morales on maybe a 1-year overcommitment Still two months to add a backup catcher and a pen arm or two. I think that 90+% of the forum would have approved if asked on November 1st if they'd be happy with these moves as of January 16th.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Even more so than Edwin, I would have hated to see what Bautista would do in a "revenge season" against our pitching staff if he was in Baltimore or something and pissed off at the Jays front office
wamco Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I'll take it. Would be fantastic if even one of tellez, foley or Greene ripped it up and could be impact call ups this season. Plus I figure some payroll has gotta be allotted to mid season pickups. I read the 3 year deal to morales was made rather than a more expensive 2 year deal . I see him hitting still 3 years from now so I'm not worried. And we made back to back Alcs with thole as backup and Martin hitting at a historically horrific rate for April and may. So I'm cool cheaping out there.

Its as good as could have been expected going into the offseason. Now go get either Valbuena (can play several positions) and a lefty. I can deal with AJ as our backup catcher as a worst case scenario, and we still have 2 first round picks in this year's draft. And I love the Morales signing. Hindsight is 20/20 - we may have paid too much, but at the time of the signing 3/33 seemed appropriate. I don't understand the Zeke signing though, I'd have non-tendered him. Pompey is cheaper and has a higher upside. Would rather see him as our 4th OF this year. Overall I am happy so far if we sign Jose.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Well I'm sure zeke would pass through waivers and will go to AAA at times
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Must be a done deal Bautista prob texted all his teammates

Pompey could be our Tyler Nequin the next season.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 If he plays more games at first than in the OF this will be okay. If he is the everyday RF then there are better options.

Should be 90%: Morales DH Pearce RF Bautista 1B Pearce at 1B if Bautista needs days off from playing in the field

I'd love to see a transition to 1B. He could elongate his career if his extensive 3B experience translates to average or better 1B defense.
