King Carlos Verified Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 (edited) Anyone planning on heading to Wrigley for this series? I'm going down with a group and we are debating staying at a hostel near Wrigley since its considerably cheaper, and I imagine it will be filled with fellow road-tripping Jays fans. Curious to hear if any of you have had any experience staying at a hostel in Chicago as the hotel prices are pretty steep for that weekend! Going to the Friday and Saturday games. Might have a few extra unused tickets if a few guys drop out. Edited January 15, 2017 by King Carlos

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I've got a lot of family in Chicago, so I'm considering making the trip as well. Just kinda sucks how much more the tickets will cost now that the Cubs aren't hot garbage.

King Carlos Verified Member Posted January 15, 2017 Author Posted January 15, 2017 I put a deposit down back in November for group tickets, as I figured if I waited until single game tickets go on sale I'd probably strike out. They called me last week to say they were taking group orders now and I snatched up 15 tickets to each game. There might only be a dozen of us going so if I have a few left over I'd be willing to sell them for my cost. We're sitting in section 209 for Friday afternoon, and in the bleachers for Saturday afternoon. I was surprised that the bleacher seats cost quite a bit more! Leaning towards staying at Wrigley Hostel or Urban Holiday Lofts. I'm finding Airbnb is actually more expensive than those options. The hotels are starting at 300 per night CDN. The hostels are between $50 and $75 per night per person CDN. Should be a great party scene that weekend. I bet there will be at least several thousand Jays fans that make the trek.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Cubs single game tickets haven't gone on sale yet. Probably around February. Get them the first day or worse case scenario wait a week or two before the games and check the official site since some tickets do get released closer to the date. Don't panic and just scoop up things on StubHub that early. Hotel prices in Chicago are probably $250-300 CAD per night on average. Not sure how AirBNB is down there, though AirBNB isn't always the cheapest. Just have to do your research on both.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I didn't end up doing the group tickets due to my unknown job status. Sorry I didn't let those that inquired know. Any idea when Individual games went on sale for them?

TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Yikes thats expensive. I have to admit I assumed this was in CDN $ but it looks like it might be USD. But If I went with 3 others (which was my plan) it would be $180 for tickets, $150 for the hotel (and not as nice a hotel), I'd spend $100 on the Friday night for entertainment equivalent to the cruise, $20 on transit. Throw in brunch and the pitch talks stuff it's not that much different than what I'd pay on my own. Plus Eno Sarris would buy me my beers.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I hope they let you buy the Pitch Talks events separately.

Throw in brunch and the pitch talks stuff it's not that much different than what I'd pay on my own. Plus Eno Sarris would buy me my beers. Yeah if it was in CAD, it's not bad. Seeing how its in USD makes it very pricey, especially if travelling solo. Don't like how it's non-refundable as well, since you're locked in for something all the way in August. Also, I assume it's not covering transportation to Chicago. You can probably do it for a cheaper price if planning by yourself. If travelling solo, best to probably book a private room on AirBNB which would be half the cost of a hotel room. If going with 2-3 people, a $250-$300 CAD per night hotel split between 2-3 isn't that bad. Private cruise sounds nice, though after a game I'd be more inclined staying in Wrigleyville or going out for beers at a sports bar. If I went with a buddy, here's a rundown on the costs: - $300 RT flight to Chicago (would use points so would only pay the taxes) - $250-300 for two nights of a hotel (split between a friend) - $200 on tickets between both games - $200 on drinks/entertainment for both nights - $100 on food roughly (depending on what & where you eat) - CTA 3-Day Pass is $20 USD. Other transportation with Uber pools I would say probably around $20 USD. Anyone could probably do the trip for around $700-$800 CAD if going down with a friend which isn't bad. If going solo, best to book a private room on AirBNB since it would be far better value than a hotel.
King Carlos Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 I was considering doing the pitch talks thing too originally but I wasn't able to convince the group to go that route. I'll probably end up spending around $750. ($200 tickets for 2 games, $180 for 3 nights in hostels, $50 gas, $20 for my share of parking, plus probably 300 in booze/food over the 3 days. All things being equal I'd prefer the hotel but all I'm going to need is a place to crash so the cost savings of a hostel seems worth it to me. Hopefully the hostels are filled with fellow Jays fans.

Last time I was there I did the Wrigley Tour (it was after the baseball season), Boat Tour and a Bears game (for $250 a ticket). I didn't have to pay for the hotel, but with the flight and some quality dinner + a night out at Second City I'm sure I spent $1,000. If you have time - the Second City was experience was awesome. Highly recommended, as is the architectural boat tour.
King Carlos Verified Member Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 No worries. I went to Wrigley 8 years ago and did the architectural tour - it was great! One thing I didn't do last time was the Wrigley Tour. I hear they offer it on game day during the season but with no clubhouse tour if its an afternoon game. I definitely want to try to do that this time around.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I'd also like to add that through the Pitch Talks...no planning. As the guy that always organizes these things for his friends that has enormous value.
