Goal to get younger. Have not accomplished much of this yet.

It has been an unsually slow off season for most teams

Most reports in the media about potential deals are "partial truths"

Lots will be done in the next 5 weeks

Wants to bring young "championship caliber" players into the farm system. Farm isn't as deep as he would like. "Just a few" of those types of players in the system

Edwin: Took exception to Blair asking if he would have done things differemntly with Edwin. Confirmed Jays offered "far more money" than he got from Cleveland. Could have gambled but

they had no idea where Edwin's market would go. They signed Morales knowing they MIGHT still be able to sign Edwin but knowing it was less likely

Need an OF

Bautista is the "most talented one out there"

Value in the free agent bullpen market is now terrible so they've avoided it

Better value in corner OF/IF types so that's what they've signed so far

Still looking at BP options though. "Yes we will add BP pieces, and it will have constant adjustment during the year"

Biagni an option for SP. He will go longer outings in ST at first "because there's no downside to that" and then decide if he's needed in the BP or starting rotation after a few weeks

Dumb question about trading Vlad Jr answered with platitudes

Extension for Gibby being discussed

That's it

Then stop hanging in no mans land for 2017.

Either go all in or tear it down

Yikes. Did he actually say that?

Excellent news. This is how championships are won, with several cost controlled elite players on the roster at same time.

Will be a few lean years, but with Shatkins in charge, by 2020 / 2021 should be seeing the results.

Also, this suggests JD will get moved for an overpaid 3B bum, along with a prospect horde.

Posted
I don't think it necessarily means JD is moved (unless they are out of it at the deadline), but I think they def want that comp pick for Bautista. They clearly want to add as much to the farm system as they can.

Trading guys like Estrada/Grilli/Happ at the deadline (if we're out of it) could definitely bring back some solid prospects.

Championship calibre?

Maybe. For sure guys like Stro, Sanchez, Osuna, JD bring you championship calibre prospects.

Doesn't make much sense to trade guys like Stro/Sanchez/Osuna when they all have 4+ years of control.

Trading JD could definitely make sense though. Depends what happens this year and how strong the rest of the division looks.

It does if we're more than 4 years away from being in perennial championship team....right now is when their value is at it's peak.

FWIW - I'm not sure I fully support the pursuit of being perennial contenders...it's a very difficult and possibly unrealistic goal.

Admitting they were clueless on something is pretty surprising, yes.

I think you grossly overestimate how predictable the FA market is. I wasn't surprised by there answer at all.

Sure it does. If you have a valuable asset that is only going to depreciate why hold on to it?

Say I have a 2015 Chevy Suburban. If I don't need an SUV for another 3 years it makes sense to sell that Suburban now maximizing the value I can get out and buying an SUV when I need one again rather than just holding on to that SUV for 3 years when it is worth less + paying the costs to maintain it.

I can almost visualize the neck-bearded rage that the Sportsnet comment section will have after reading a quote like that.

Most WAR per dollar regardless of need makes me think Valbuena, but they'd have to concede that Smoak is useless for that to work.

As I've said before Shapiro has been doing interviews on MLB radio for years. He 100% admits stuff like this all the time.

Posted
I'm surprised Shapiro is not more Ricciardi-esque with his answers given how much unnecessary crap he and Atkins get despite being good at their jobs.
Posted
Shapiro destroyed Blair on the Edwin question. "Does that answer the Edwin question?" is basically a mic drop.

Blair has the mental acuity of a thumbtack. Just another day at the office for Shapiro.

Interesting but it's still pretty concerning. You form some belief about a player's market, but they had no clue... actually it looks like they had no clue about the DH market overall, since it seems like Morales would be signing for less by now.

Good interview. FAP FAP FAP

Hard not to feel confident when you listen to them that they have a solid plan that they are just going to execute, regardless of temp casual blow back.

Got to say thus far the only head scratcher with them was the Smoak extension, but its a small financially in the grand scheme. Nit picking.
