I've gotta be honest, I'm a little surprised by the route that Shapiro's taken this off-season. The Jays have found themselves in back to back ALCS's and most would fathom that they'd try to put the final pieces of the puzzle in place but thus-far it's looking like they're taking 2 steps back.

I'm optimistic that Morales can fare well in this division but I feel like they could have signed him for a lot less. Perhaps it's just the price that comes with getting a free-agent to play in Toronto but it still stings. Pearce is fine as a bench piece. That still leaves us with gaping holes in both corner OF positions, 1B, back-up C and the bullpen... Not to mention that the general lack of depth is concerning.

A lot of key-pieces left and the markets growing smaller by the day.

Is this Shapiro's coy way of initiating a total rebuild? I'd figure with the money that's come off the books that they could do both but their hand in the free-agent market this offseasons been pretty terrible.

I'll be getting nervous if spring training rolls around and we're still basically short 2 outfielders and a reliever or two. Until then, not much point in worrying. There's still a lot of players on the market.

How many of them are players that we actually would've wanted in October vs. This is what's left to chose from?

And how many for the outfield have signed that people wanted? Fowler and Reddick? Guys like Bautista and Moss are still good options.

I'll get nervous when the official opening day lineup is posted and has a combination of Pillar, Upton, Carrera, and Pompey as starting outfielders.

I have faith that this front office will be able to get enough done that we'll be contending, atleast on paper.

Do we need a new thread everytime someone gets nervous? The off season hasn't ended yet, let's wait and see how it unfolds before we bother analyzing.

No we need to medicate someone every time they get nervous. If the fans had their way we would have 75 million/year tied up in Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and David Price....until the end of 2021. That would have made me nervous.

I generally don't get nervous over things I can't control

This is the statement of the day. I had a conversation last night with an old school farmer about this. He said the minute you stop worrying about things you can't control....the minute your life become's a million times better.

I would be a little nervous if we decided to go with a "new" four outfielder starting lineup.....

It's also worth noting that the Sox and even the Yankees will be significantly better.

I could have sworn the Red Sox were better than the jays a year ago?????????

Who is on the market that's worth a damn? There isn't much in FA. Maybe there's a trade to be had.

What FA's are left that we could spend $30 million on?

Bautista, Pagan, and Iannetta should come at less than $30m assuming Joey takes the QO amount on a one year deal.

Or you can do Valbuena, Pagan, and Moss for less than $20m in this market, and have money left over.

I mean, the market is s***, but they'll be able to add wins.

I could see them spending $8-$10M on relievers

$3-4M on a backup catcher

$15-$20M on 2 OFers and/or Valbuena.

Huh Pearce is fine as a bench piece? We already have 3 bench pieces Smoak, Barney and Zeke. Pearce won't be a bench player...

Which is worrisome in it's own right. He's never had more than 383 plate appearances in the big-leagues. He's only had 1 good season, which he followed up by posting 0.4 WAR the following year (so much for taking a step forward). He's a good guy to bet on if you're a middling team, but the Jays should be past that at this point. A powerhouse like the Jays should have a masher manning 1B. Not Smoak and Pearce.

I hope the gamble pays off and that he's a valuable piece, It's just a little odd that they'd be gambling when the team has proven in continuous years that they're a championship caliber team.

That's precisely the point.

If they can acquire someone like Granderson or Puig I'd be happy but I just don't see a deal like that coming from this regime.

Of course, but they're much better now and the young guys are further along. Spells more losses for the Jays
