AGL_91 Verified Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 The heat just got turned right up on STL. If they do want to make a splash at 3B it’s JD or bust now, which is good news for us
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Ken Rosenthal: BREAKING: Orioles closer Zach Britton ruptured his Achilles yesterday working out in California. Expected to be out at least six months. See above, bro, lol.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 If the O’s decide to hold on to Machado, then the ball is in STL’s court when it comes to trade for JD. All it takes is one desperate GM.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 The Rays are going to take a step back and rebuild it looks like. Sounds like the Orioles might be doing the same. Do the Jays follow them or do they chase the Yanks and Red Sox? There is room for all 3 to make the playoffs.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 What about that Machado fellow? Well, Machado has already stated his preference is to play Shortstop this year. Not sure if its a problem to remain at 3rd.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 If the Rays now decide to rebuild they could stock their farm quickly. Archer could get them a hell of a return.

In theory there is But I'd bet against 3 AL East teams making the playoffs in 2018 unless Jays or Orioles add significantly. And I just don't see that happening
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 I'd wouldn't make a bet the Jays make the playoffs next year, but I don't see us tearing it down this OS. There is a business case to going for it one more time and although it could hurt our rebuild to wait until the deadline, its not like we'll walk away with nothing for guys like JD (unless he hurts himself :s). End of the day this is baseball. The fact its a business is real. Not to mention the fact that anything can happen during a season. The Yanks or Sox are not sure bets to perform next year. The O/S winners don't always end up doing well. I trust the FO to make good baseball decisions, even if those are affected by some financial/public perception decisions
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 I'm kind of sad to see Longoria go. It's been great watching him in the AL East all these years. His 2 Hrs, including a walk off to win the 2011 wild card was awesome. My parents have a spot in Port Charlotte too (Rays STing home) and we always catch a Rays game when we visit. I have a couple Longo autographs and he's always really nice to the fans. I wear a knock off Longoria jersey to the games. He will be missed.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Seems like so many teams are rebuilding (giving the non-rebuilding teams a chance to fill their holes via trade) or are patiently waiting to sign someone. I think there are going to be some good deals coming up.

I think there are going to be some good deals coming up. IMHO that’s Shatkins plan this OS. Sign veterans to short cheapish deals ala WS winning Sox. Either lightning strikes and the planets align or we ship out the whole lot at the deadline. I don’t see any other way to succeed at their stated plans.

Maybe that's why he hasn't been traded. Although, I am more of the mindset that I don't think the Jays compete this year no matter what they do, and I rather get 1 top 100 prospect now, then risk JD getting injured or having a bad year and getting even less at the deadline.

So trade him for s*** now so you don't have to trade him for lesser s*** in July or lose him for a comp pick after the season? That doesn't exactly help a rebuild, and if one top 100 prospect is all the Jays can get for him, then f*** it, just keep him and see what happens in 2018.

Well, would you have been happy if we got the same return the Rays got for Longo?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 20, 2017 Posted December 20, 2017 Well, would you have been happy if we got the same return the Rays got for Longo? Longo's owed over 80 million. Them getting Arroyo's not that bad.

Yeah I don't know the money exchanging hands but Longo is owed a lot of money still. He hasn't been that much better than Frazier over the past couple of years and I bet he signs for a lot cheaper. Getting Arroyo on top of the salary dump isn't that bad.

They'll likely flip Span now, too. Eating money as well.
