John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I highly doubt that was Duquette's call. That kind of philosophy has Angelos written all over it.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Lmao @ Jack Morris getting in while Mike Mussina and Kevin Brown might not. These idiots have no f***ing idea what they’re doing. Slightly above average pitcher who was an ******* to everyone outside of baseball (leading, indirectly, to one woman's death even). I don't get why so many believe he should be in.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 They were elected via the Modern Ballot. Not sure what that is exactly. Alan Trammell had a pretty good case for the HoF IMO while Morris did not. Fangraphs asked various journalists (including Shi Davidi) to vote on the ballot: Link Results Marvin Miller: 21 of 22 votes (95%) Alan Trammell: 19 of 22 votes (86%) … Ted Simmons: 8 of 22 votes (36%) Jack Morris: 6 of 22 votes (27%) Tommy John: 4 of 22 votes (18%) Steve Garvey: 1 of 22 votes (5%) Dave Parker: 1 of 22 votes (5%) Don Mattingly: 0 votes Dale Murphy: 0 votes Luis Tiant: 0 votes
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Haha, Paul Beeston was on the committee: “This year's committee consisted of Hall of Famers George Brett, Rod Carew, Bobby Cox, Dennis Eckersley, John Schuerholz, Don Sutton, Dave Winfield and Robin Yount; major league executives Sandy Alderson (Mets), Paul Beeston (Blue Jays), Bob Castellini (Reds), Bill DeWitt (Cardinals) and David Glass (Royals); and veteran media members/historians Bob Elliott, Steve Hirdt and Jayson Stark.”

These idiots have no f***ing idea what they’re doing. Did David Wells even get one vote? Morris and Wells have equivalent careers and Wells is also a playoff hero. Jack Morris is the baseball version of Trump. He got voted in just to f*** over the system or as a protest vote.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Trammell is legit. If Ozzie Smith is in Trammell should be in too.

You are across the pond though so I'll give you a pass.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Late last night rumours mounted rhat Cubs were signing Brandon Morrow for 2/20 then those rumours got shot down. Does sound like they're heavy in negotiations with him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Mlbtr Sources close to*Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News*tell her that the Mets have talked to “at least two teams” about trading former All-Star*Matt Harvey*this winter.*This seems to be part of a larger strategy that Ackert describes as “dipping into their strength of starting pitchers to address their needs heading into the 2018 season.” One of Ackert’s sources says that the Mets want to “flip Harvey for a reliever”, and are more interested in moving him than fellow starters*Robert Gsellman*or*Seth Lugo.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Harvey's stock has fallen so badly
Cbert Verified Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Cards are apparently going hard after Colome. Wonder what we could get from them if we dangled Donaldson and Osuna. Gyorko, Reyes, Flaherty and Bader would be a nice start...
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Trammell is legit. If Ozzie Smith is in Trammell should be in too. Trammell and Robbie Alomar also had similar careers.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 MLBTR on Morrow to Cubs: MONDAY, 7:09am: The deal is complete, pending a physical, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The deal will be for two years and $21MM. Morrow will earn $9MM in 2018 and 2019, with a $3MM buyout or a $12MM vesting option for the 2020 season.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Good for Morrow, I'm happy for him

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Good for Morrow, I'm happy for him Agree, hope he stays injury free. Multiple injury hit seasons, signs a minor league deal with the Dodgers and turns that into a great season and a big payday. The life of a reliever!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 MLBTR: The Red Sox are advising rival organizations that they’ll consider dealing away center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr., according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). That stance, he notes, is tied to the team’s efforts to add a power bat — presumably, one that would occupy a corner outfield spot and bump Andrew Benintendi into center.

It's 2017 and Boston has tunnel vision about adding 'power' instead of just adding talent wherever they can. This bodes very well for Toronto in the long term.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Plus Red Sox will see Stanton as the escalation of an arms race and will want to respond.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 The only argument anyone could make for Morris is how many more innings he threw than basically every other starter in career. That being said it doesn't make him a Hall of Fame pitcher.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Well the Stanton deal kinda stole the thunder, but it's Winter Meetings time! I can't take my eyes off this...
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I hate Cashman now because he's so damn good, but glad Dombrowski is in the this division now. Have to hope he destroys the Red Sox with more short term moves before they smarten up and hire someone better.

Do you think Rogers would ever entertain adding a Stanton-esque contract?

Cashman was good before adding Stanton. In fact, I think Stanton's contract might end up hurting them in a few years once a lot of their young players start getting really expensive and Stanton starts to fall off, but for what they gave up to get him, it was worth it for the short term.
