metafour Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 And how does Maitan compare to the SS the Jays are in on for July 2018? Neither one of them are SS's moving forward. Maitan was more hyped ("best prospect in years" label being thrown around before he signed), but as we are seeing that doesn't always translate. He certainly didn't look like a "special" talent this past season. As mentioned, there doesn't seem to be much logic in him waiting until next July anyway as only 1 team can sign Ohtani (if he can even come over) which means that there WILL be teams left to pay out Maitan.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Np man I find the part that teams stopped scouting him because everyone knew he was going to the Braves pretty interesting. His stock has really fallen since the Braves signed him. Will be interesting to see how much he gets.
Ray Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Braves lose 12 IFA's in total including Kevin Maitan. They lose a 3rd round draft pick in next years MLB draft. And finally they also have restrictions placed on them in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 IFA class. John Copollela might've destroyed a good portion of the Braves future competitive window.

The sad thing is that I doubt Copollela did anything shady or different than what most teams do on the reg. Hacking another team's prospect database is okay with the MLB though, comparatively speaking.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Wow. That is a harsh punishment.

It's sad, what Hart and Copolella have done to that team. They've overseen three brutal seasons, and what do they have of value? Freeman (inherited) Albies (inherited) Acuna (inherited) Inciarte and a bunch of pitching prospects, none of which look elite. Just an atrocious job managing the rebuild.

Copollela did something illegal that allowed him to sign guys he otherwise wouldn't have gotten (supposedly), and other teams might have. Having them stripped is absolutely the right move. If other teams do it, they should be punished too. The hacking is a completely separate kind of issue. I don't think it was dealt with correctly, and you could argue there should have been legal action taken, but it's apples to oranges.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I wonder if AA knew it was going to be this harsh before accepting the job. I'm sure he expected some form of punishment but 12 prospects, a draft pick and restrictions on two international signing periods is brutal.

BTS Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Holy crap, lifetime ban on John Coppolella.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Holy crap, lifetime ban on John Coppolella. What the hell? Did he molest these players or something equally terrible?

It's not worth speculating on one way or another until or if we ever know what Coppolella and co. actually did to warrant these penalties. I guess for now the appropriate thing to do is to assume it was something ghastly that justifies getting the book thrown at them.
metafour Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 "The players will have restrictions on their free agency. They will be eligible to sign with another club for another signing bonus beginning on Dec. 5 up until Jan. 15. After Jan. 15, the player is still allowed to sign but cannot receive an additional signing bonus. Only the amount of the signing bonus beyond $200,000 will count toward a team’s signing bonus pool. Players are allowed to re-sign with the Braves, but if they choose to do so, they must wait until May 1 to sign with them and can’t receive an additional signing bonus."
Ray Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Good for teams like the Pirates and Twins who are less likely to get Otahni but still have IFA cash to spend. They struck a goldmine here.
bzapple Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 What the hell? Did he molest these players or something equally terrible? MLB just agrees with BTS in this thread, so they decided to not let Coppolella touch any other front office.

I guess for now the appropriate thing to do is to assume it was something ghastly that justifies getting the book thrown at them. What they did wrong: "The investigation found the franchise circumvented international signing rules from 2015 to 2017. The organization signed five players subject to the team’s signing bonus pool to contracts with bonuses lower than the what the club agreed to pay the players." "The investigation also found the Braves offered impermissible benefits to a player selected in the First-Year Player Draft, persuading said player to sign for a lower amount. "
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 That's pretty clear wrongdoing that doesn't really have a defence.

metafour Verified Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 That's pretty clear wrongdoing that doesn't really have a defence. It doesn't have any defense, but dont think for one second that Ohtani looming around in the background didn't influence the severity of this punishment. This is a warning shot to any front offices that were even thinking of circumventing the rules in hopes of landing Ohtani; which was probably every single one considering that there is absolutely zero logical reason as to why a player like Ohtani should be bound to the same rules used to deter the bonuses of 16 year old Venezuelan and Dominican kids in the first place. A player like Ohtani breaks this whole system, so you know full well that teams would cheat to get someone of his talent. The precedent of a lifetime ban changes the dynamic.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 Jeff Passan... just insinuated that Copollela strong fisted his "underlings" to do unethical things, which led to the leak of the under table doings. Wow! - PTS The Buscones are getting cut out, this will be interesting. Believes there will be a massive change in the draft within 18 months, where all players will be eligible concerning the NPB/IFA's and MLB in the Rule 4 draft.

Ya I was listening as well, it seems like John wasn't well liked in the org and a few employees with knowledge/involvement of the infractions "ratted" on him. Sux to get burned like that....
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 To be fair to the Braves, AA was likely going to trade 75% of the prospects they lost anyway. Just now they lose them for nothing instead of getting overpriced 30 somethings in return. /throwing shade at Alex. But seriously, that is a stiff penalty, and I agree it was with Ohtani in mind. I guess unless they implement an international draft, this type of stuff was bound to happen. Braves just got caught.
