What would you guys propose be on the Jays spring training hats if/when they are ready to dump the maple leaf?

Maybe something with the CN Tower? Something with Ace to pay homage to the awful logo we had with the T and Ace in it?

Pretty much any of the 1980s hats would be cool with me. Either dark or baby blue.

Yeah, that would be a very nice ST hat. Like the idea of the red bill, something to make it a little bit different.

News to me, did we make a recent trade for pool money?

Can't recall. Just could've sworn I remember reading somewhere that the jays were in that group of teams with about a million to spend. Anyone know of a site that tracks international budgets?

Found this, Jays only have 50,000...

As for what Deadpool said about him not worried about money, here's an excerpt from Otani himself...

.“As long as I have enough money to be able to play baseball and am enjoying baseball, that’s all I’m asking for right now.” He makes about $2mm a year now but lives in the team dorms and spends the $1,000/month he has his parents send him on fitness books & equipment and food. He doesn’t know how to drive, doesn’t own a car and won’t even go to a party where there is alcohol. He is not the “typical” ballplayer.

He will sign where he feels comfortable and needed….and of course where he is allowed to pitch and hit.

As much as people don't want to believe that it'll be money based...it absolutely is if your team can only offer $50K. It likely isn't a massive factor, but the money has to at least be competitive.

According to the kid it's the best fit for him, he's still going to make half a million, and spends roughly a 1,000 bucks a month, Jays could do the same thing they did with Alomar and let him live in their hotel. Who knows, man.

There's a difference of him taking 500K less and taking $3.4 Million less. The union would be pissed if he took 50K as that's basically pennies.

I bet if he decided he wanted to go with the Jays they would have to trade for more cap space so the signing bonus is at least respectable.

It's bonus money...the union doesn't really give a s*** about it. With that said MLB has said that it will be super careful in looking at Otani's contract and future contracts (meaning he is expected to remain at the minimum for 3 years and any perks above may result in a bonus pool penalty), that is where the Union is going to put up a fight IMO.

As they should. Otani is clearly not a prospect.

Just found this article. I guess we moved Lane Thomas for pool money that put us around a million? We traded him to STL but don't know for how much.

Braves officially lose Maitan. That Coppy/Hart FO was one of the worst in recent memory. Not only did they completely botch the rebuild, they also brought shame to the entire organization.

Gets to keep his $4.2 million bonus, plus he''ll get another huge signing bonus when signed again. Lucky kid.

Sorry forgot to post the link in the previous post.

This guy is saying we're at a million because of the trade. Not saying he's accurate but looking at most of the big signings from the same site back in July, we spent about 4.3mill of our 4.75 budget. Now I'm assuming the other guys that were signed without a dollar amount attached means they were under 10 grand. If we traded for, let's say 500k from the Cards, that would put us close to a million.

Not sure who is correct, though. It'd be nice if someone wrote a piece that looked at all signings and financial additions to the pools to show what exactly remains for that current signing period.

My question is are those players forbidden from re-signing with Atlanta?

Where's it being reported official? All I can find is rumours because Heyman said it's inevitable 25 minutes ago, and other sites are claiming it's official according to Heyman. f***ing clickbait bastard!

If Otani actually decides that he wants to play here and wants, say 2 million, I'm sure that we could and would make that happen with trades.

so i watched the movie Fastball last night. havent seen it discussed here, i probably just missed it

great baseball doc if you haven't watched it. Dalkowski, what a sad figure though. Implication was the guy was throwing 115 mph.

Feller 15 SO in his MLB debut as a 17 year old lol

So the top MLB FB ever based on todays measurement standard are Ryan at 109 mph and Feller at 108 mph

Ryan threw ~260 pitches in a single game, 7 no-hitters, over 5000 career SO, his last pitch was 96 mph at 46 yrs old, what a beast

(my numbers may be a bit off)

Interesting to see what happens to Maitan after he is a FA, would hope that we are in on him.

I suspect whichever team with the highest available pool that misses out on Ohtani will get him (which might be the Yankees) :(

I don't think it's worth his while to wait for July, as one or two teams have good pools still available, and it would cost him a year of development.

And how does Maitan compare to the SS the Jays are in on for July 2018?

Not enough difference to make Maitan a Jays target. There are other international free agents out there, including a few others from Japan I believe.

Thanks to JFL for the article.

The news that Major League Baseball has made Kevin Maitan a free agent will understandably set off a bidding war.

Maitan was the No. 1 international prospect in the 2016. Before he was declared a free agent, he ranked ninth on the updated and still loaded Braves Top 10 Prospects list. Teams rarely get a second chance at signing this kind of talent on the open market.

But as Maitan hits the market again, he's going to be a tough player for teams to evaluate because his pro reports vary pretty distinctly from his glowing amateur reports.

Maitan was as famous as they come when he was on the international circuit. He was seen as one of the best young hitters to hit the international market in years.

But everyone in baseball knew pretty early in 2015 that Maitan was going to sign with the Braves. Once that happened, other clubs stopped scouting Maitan in detail. For most teams, the majority of their amateur reports on Maitan are going to be from 2014 and early 2015, which means they are now two to three years old.

Maitan made his pro debut in 2017. He stood out in extended spring training, but those who saw him in the Appalachian League and instructional league were much less impressed.

So teams will have to decide, how much do they rely on what their international scouts saw (when Maitan looked like a future star) and how much do they depend on those less-impressive 2017 pro reports?

"When you don't see a guy for two or three years you are forced to go with more recent info," said an American League front office official. “Different teams will weigh it differently. Players are being evaluated at age 13, 14 and 15 then go away for two years and come back. Every team is looking at track record and history and past scouting reports. The caveat is that the international market makes the older info less valuable."

Maitan is scheduled to play in Panama this winter, which will give front office officials to see him in game action. While pro scouts saw plenty of Maitan in 2017, not many GMs or special assistants to the GMs have seen him play in person in years.

Overall it makes Maitan a still very desirable prospect, but one who actually carries more causes for concern than he did when he was a 16-year-old.

When Maitan signed with the Braves, there was a pretty even split between scouts who believed he would be able to stick at shortstop and those who thought he would eventually get too big for the position.

A year and a half later, scouts are much more in agreement that he will not be a big league shortstop. Maitan's lower half has thickened up significantly as he's gone from the 185-pound amateur to a 210-pound 17-year-old. He has excellent hands and a shortstop's arm, but he lacks the quickness and twitchiness teams look for at shortstop. He's now seen as a future third baseman. And it’s not that hard to find scouts who say they believe he could eventually end up at first base if he doesn't stay on top of his conditioning.

At the plate, scouts who saw him in the Appalachian League or in instructional league were also less impressed with the bat than scouts who saw him as an amateur. He didn't show as much bat speed as scouts expected, especially when he was hitting lefthanded. Even those who were not blown away were quick to also note that the Appalachian League was a very aggressive assignment for a 17-year-old. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. may have dominated the league as a 17-year-old in 2016, but most of the top international signees (Miguel Sano, Gary Sanchez and Miguel Cabrera for example) begin their pro careers in the complex leagues.

All of this has to be weighed into any team’s evaluation of the now free-agent infielder. There will be a robust market for Maitan, because teams rarely get a chance to land a 17-year-old international prospect like Maitan, but he's not the same prospect he was when he was 15.
