^ Morales is neither here nor there at this point, and it was a fairly shrewd move at the time.

But I'd flip Smoak for EE yesterday.

Thing is, that 20mil AAV for a 1B/DH probably became Morales+Pearce. The rest has probably always been OF, RP, and backup C.

I honestly don't understand why people are reacting like losing EE is the end of the world. Bad body sluggers like EE have failed many, many times when they hit their mid 30s. Take Pujols as a recent example. He could be productive for the next 3-4 years but odds are he's done being an elite bat.

Probably a combination of sentiment and ignoring aging patterns of players like Encarnacion.

The Jays had Edwin at his peak from 2012-16. The Edwin that plays in Cleveland over the next three years is not going to resemble the player from 2012-16 in all likelyhood. When you pay for past performance, you end up with situations like Tulowitzki having $80m left on his deal and Martin having $60m left on his deal when both are heading towards their declines.

I would not have minded EE back on a three year deal, but chances are he would have joined the other $20m a year guys as declining vets making big money when the direction Shapiro wants to take is more reasonable short-term risks. EE would have been a 10/5 player too so not exactly a tradeable asset if things went south for the team.

It's silly atm, but it might become true if Trump takes an axe to the upper Federal tax rate brackets in the States like he's promised.

It's really not

Top marginal tax rate is 54℅ in Canada and 43 in Ohio

60 x .57 = about 34M

80 x .46 = about 36M

But I am sure the real tax accountant can produce a lot of savings at that level.

As much as I like to trust Asian in math and finances it's not that simple. Baseball players spend less than 45% of the time in Canada and are only taxed for 45% of their salary at Canada's top marginal rate (which I believe is 49.1%)

I think the top marginal rate is a bit higher (they're basically charging people like 50% interest on the Ontario taxes owed, or some ********). Still, as you mentioned, only a portion is taxed at that rate.

I have to wonder if Rogers couldn't muck with it though. Basically offer a player 1 special preferred share, pay out most of the salary as a dividend, and have it only taxed at the dividend rate or something? I think CEOs and other high earners have been doing that for a long time, but I could have the details wrong.

They'd have likely targeted Pearce, regardless. Meh... s*** happens.

The problem for me is we're giving 15M to bad body sluggers in Morales and Pearce instead of 20M to Edwin.

I'd rather just give it to Edwin.

fify - it's easier on your health if you look at it this way.

I'd be happy if you guys just stopped quoting, the "I'M HERE GUYS" guy. His pro Shatkins posts are sexy!

Pujols was done being an elite bat like 3 years ago.

The implication was on re being done as an elite bat.

Why though? He's is likely top 4 on the team against RHP

Multi position nice bat off the bench. I don't believe World Series contenders have Pearce in their lineup. Solid guy for injuries and off the bench. I don't want to see him at 1st or LF everyday

The thing that bothers me is they didn't go to ee's camp just prior to the morales signing and say you have to make a decision now or we have a player we are going to sign that will likely close off a potential return

How do you know they didn't?

Morales would still be out there or would have signed a 1 year deal. Beltran and Holliday both got one year deals and Napoli and Bautista are still out there

Nothing but assumptions, neither of you have the inside knowledge to back up these claims.

The Jays front office really misread the 1B/DH market, as did the entire industry. If the Jays were more patient, they most likely would have been able to snag EE at what Cleveland paid for him. Instead they rushed into signing Morales to 3 years right at the beginning of the offseason. Right now Morales could possibly still be a FA and likely is only getting a one-year deal, instead of three. This is how this FO works which I've been saying from last year: they like to work early and would rather have a Plan B or C in place to fill a hole on the roster instead of risking not having anything going after their Plan A. They did that with Estrada and Happ last offseason (which paid off), and they did that by resigning Smoak to a two-year extension in August (which was a stupid mistake). Sucks because they are spending close to 15M on just Morales & Smoak alone. Thing is it didn't work this time around since they completely misread the market that was flooded with veteran power 1B/DH type bats.

Irrational anger is what makes this board go round.

You know he can change positions after the game starts, right? Lol

Shi Davidi's article. He could just be making stuff up to mess with the fan base.
