If this is true we have to get it done. He can play OF for one year without tanking his value too much.

All the available superior fielders are likely significant worse with the bat next year.

We've secured a comp pick from EE signing with Cleveland so giving up a hypothetical second comp pick shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I wrote an article on this a couple of weeks ago: http://theballpoint.org/index.php/2016/12/07/jose-bautistablue-jays-reunion-isnt-question/

The 2-3 year deal now seems out of the question. Jays shouldn't hesitate to bring him back on a one year deal if thats all it will cost. Guys like Bruce or Granderson will require $13 & $15 million respectively + assets and both of them aren't as good as Bautista can be with the bat. Bautista is one of the greatest if not greatest hitter ever to put on a Blue Jays uniform and its sad this organization is kind of casting him aside like this when he won't be that expensive to bring back.

+ the fact that he's sort of a bluejay icon and we clearly don't have players lining up to come here in FA. Give him his 18 Mil and lets all move on

Yup. It's not a guarantee guys like Moss, Rasmus, Pagan or Coghlan would want to come here in the first place. Look at Fowler and Reddick for an example. There aren't any decent outfielders who are both solid offensively & defensively available anyways. Bautista is an icon here, the organization knows him best, and we all know when he's healthy he could be one of the most feared hitters in baseball. There is no way a guy like Rasmus, Moss, Granderson or Bruce even come close offensively to what a healthy Bautista is capable of.

Revere signs 1yr $4m. He would have been a nice addition and cheap.

Saunders probably isn't any worse than Moss. He's more risk-reward though IMO. We could really use him or Moss. I'd probably prefer Saunders.

Play OF for another year full time and risk him getting injured again? People underestimate his decline in RF, it's not like it is going to get better this year. He is an absolute liability out there, Bautista is a DH/1B now.

But Gibby will probably start him out in RF everyday anyways if we sign him.

Bautista had two freak injuries. Turf toe from hitting the wall and a knee issue from his spikes getting caught in the turf at rogers. Even when he came back and played there were lingering effects of those issues. I fully expect a healthy Bautista to be better in the field and the plate

No one is giving Bautista a $18-20m one year deal to play 1B/DH.

Beltran got 16 so Bautista is easily worth 18 if he didn't have a pick attached. Anyone with a protected pick or a team that's already lost a pick and is really going for it might go there though.

For what

Exactly what are you trying to create a last place team. Revere isn't a value add and hasn't been for a very long time

We won't sign Bautista. Shatkins is crazy for picks. Internally they probably put that pick at 15-20 Mil who knows.

Not hard to replace Bautista. An above average but declining hitter with s*** defense.

I suspect Shatkins is looking at 2020 as the timing to be WS contenders again, around same time Martin and Tulo contracts expire.

The #Bluejays continue to explore trade options in an effort to fill their OF void. One name they've kicked around: Andrew McCutchen.

#BlueJays would have to take big bite out of farm system to land McCutchen. But he'd certainly help quell post-Edwin angst in Toronto.

GM Neal Huntington recently said it was likely #Pirates would keep McCutchen. But #BlueJays are among several clubs with interest.

Two of the Blue Jays' better prospects came straight from the Pirate system four months ago so they could dump Liriano. I really don't think there's a sexy enough package among the remaining pieces on the farm that gets McCutchen. Definitely would need to subtract from the MLB roster, probably starting with Stroman.

Emptying the farm forcing McCutchen would be a very confusing move given how they've operated so far. I don't think they're seriously interested unless it's a roster SP going back. Stroman for Cutch + prospects? Happ + prospects for Cutch?

Stroman for Cutch + Josh Bell or Glasnow might get both teams thinking.

I wonder if expanding the deal to take back more salary like Harrison and/or Bastardo could lower the price for McCutchen?

I doubt it. Harrison is owed 17.5M over two years and isn't really overpaid. Bastardo has 1 year and 6.5M left, and is overpaid by like 2M probably. I doubt they let either impact their Cutch return.

Stroman will be traded this offseason. Shapiro see him like a bullpen arm?

Stroman and Pompey for Cutchen and money

Im not averse to trading Stroman in the right deal, I am just wary to trim the rotation down to 4 starters when we have no clear options in house or even free agency to fill a 5th spot.

Not a chance Stroman gets us Cutch plus Bell or Glasgow.

I would rather let Pompey run with one of the spots and bring back Bautista. You still have Upton so Pompey could move to RF and Pearce as well. Bautista doesn't have to play RF everyday

If you bring back Bautista then maybe you recover some of the Goodwill with the fans. You can always unload majorly at the deadline if things go wrong.

Hard to see a deal taking shape otherwise. They're probably similar caliber players (both projected at 3-3.5 wins this year). The big differences between them as assets:

- McCutchen will make 28.5M over the next two years and Stroman probably makes about 8.

- Stroman is controllable for two additional years.

So if you believe the projections, their expected 2017/2018 win production is the same, only Stroman makes 20M less and has an additional 2 years of arbitration. That probably makes him like $50M more valuable than Cutch as an asset. So if not Bell or Glasnow, something of significant value would have to be added to the deal by Pittsburgh.

That hinges on the Pirates being completely in love with Stroman. I think they might just prefer to use Cutch to restock the farm with impact prospects, keep Bell at 1B, use their magic dust on Glasnow, and put Meadows in the OF. Again, that depends on how much they like having Stroman slot with Cole, Nova, and Taillon in the rotation. That might really appeal to them, who knows.

They're apparently serious about Quintana, so there does seem to be a desire to bring in a controllable SP1/2. I think Stroman would be very appealing to them, unless they have serious doubts about him that we're not aware of.

It's not a rumour. A tweet came out about McCutchen and we're bored, so we're imagining scenarios on what deal might make sense from both sides' views. Killing time before opening presents.

TheScore had an article saying Sanchez or Stroman would be ideal targets for Pittsburgh (Take it this was him just floating ideas). But then there was the whole thing about Colorado and Blackmon and other rumblings about him. I hope its just dumb national media guys talking out of their ass but his name keeps popping up on more than just this board.
