How's his framing? If it's average he should be fine as a cheap backup.

Looks like not great, but better than Navarro (outside of 2014 when he was the worst in baseball).

RotoWire News: Holland (elbow) was sitting at 88-91 mph with his fastball during a showcase Monday, FanGraphs' Eric Longenhagen reports. (11/7/2016)

Not a good sign.

Oldish news, and an offseason showcase. I'd be much more worried if that was the result at the end of a spring training amount of time to build up arm strength.

I think hitting 91 after TJ with 5 months left to go before the season starts might actually be a good sign. But I'm not really versed on the recovery process of TJ guys and their corresponding velocities.

The season starts near the end of June?

I'm guessing Cherington recommended Salty to Atkins/Shapiro--as Ben had him with the Red Sox when he was ruining the team.

I'm inclined to think there is no more money

My sources tell me that Rogers added money to the budget in order to sign Bautista.

Dombrowski's going to ruin the Sox more than Cherington did.. especially if the Sale trade backfires and they can't get anyone decent to hit at 3B (their depth is thin at that position). Dave's ruined all of Cherington's work of building that farm into a potential sustainable contender--now they're an SP injury(especially Sale, Price or Porcello) away from being in a serious mess, especially considering the offense won't bail them out again, since Ortiz has retired, and the farm is barren of MLB-ready talent (I don't count Benintendi, as he already is in the show and is projected in LF on Opening Day).

As for Salty--he'd be an offensive upgrade for Boston right now, as neither Leon or Vazquez are reliable offensively, and Swihart still has question marks. But he'll be a decent backup for the Jays..

Wasn't he behind the development of the farm system that everyone on this board is envious of? I know the Sandoval contract is brutal, but everyone makes mistakes, and he built a solid foundation for that team, while also winning a World Series. Can't really say he "ruined" the team.

Yes he did--unfortunately, Trader Dave really wants to win now and doesn't care about the future--especially as the Sox payroll swells over the tax after this season due to arb raises and bad contracts. Current projections have them over $200M in 2018 and 2019, and a dire mess in 2020, when Porcello, Pomeranz, Sale and Bogaerts are free agents and everyone except Pomeranz likely getting $25-35M/year in free agency.. which will be difficult for the Sox to afford, as they'll be back at the 50% tax again then, assuming they reset this year by keeping payroll under $195M...

If Sale doesn't work out and Porcello regresses back to the pitcher he was in Detroit, Sox are in a heap of trouble..

Very good points. Thanks!

what did he say?

Market suxxxx $ value is over priced in the LHP market and they're looking at other avenues to improve possibly LF or where it makes sense, in concerns of the '17 roster and beyond. Sorry... (I'm paraphrasing)

Speaking of LHP, Dillon Overton just got DFA'd. He was a Top 10 prospect for the A's coming into last season. He had TJS and velocity did drop a bit, but I'd pick him up for back of the rotation depth and/or the bullpen.

what did he say?

He said him and Shapiro are afraid of spending Rogers money because they don't really believe in this team and can't wait to dismantle it.

They didn't really want to sign Bautista but Edward Rogers forced their hands. They only want to make safe and risk averse deals that make them look good

You see for the longest time in Cleveland they didnt have any money to spend and now they are afraid to execute deals

Further more he made it clear that the biggest component of the recent Indians success was Andrew Miller who was acquired in a deal they Shapiro and Atkins would have never made.

Ross further admitted that he had no idea how to actually put a winning baseball team together and that his real job was getting Shapiro's coffee and looking after Gibby

Doubtful. Anyway, the current estimate (look at original post on this thread) with Pompey($520k) substituted by Salta..... ($1.25M) would be about $153.6M. It the earlier touted opening day target of $160-165M is for real, that still leaves some money to work with.

He's trolling.

It's an interesting article. It would be kind of ironic if Ed Rogers was wanting them to spend a lot more on payroll, only to have the FO decide to go more conservative. I think they are doing the right thing at this stage by waiting it out a little longer, but wouldn't be surprised to see them add 1-2 more free agents if they can get them on 1 year deals.

He did a fine job developing the farm. His performance as GM, as it pertains to the ML team, did leave something to be desired. I'm not saying he was horrible, but he certainly wasn't that good either.
