Laika Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 What about the Cuban? I'm actually alright with our OF. Just get a good lefty RP. Plan for Upton in LF. But if Ramirez, Pompey, or Gourriel impress in spring training I'd let them roll with the job to start the year. I'm not sure if Gurriel will even be given OF reps this year. They'll probably start him in Dunedin as a shortstop, one would think.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 I just found out his name is pronounced Lord-ess. I was saying it like Lords in my head.

If (and it's a big if) Gurriel excels in AAA as a shortstop, we could see him given some OF games at AAA and then called up as an OF this year where he could remain until Tulo either breaks down or is traded. Similar to what the Nats did with Trea Turner.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 At least the OF depth in 2017 looks to be solid enough: Bautista/Pillar Upton Pearce Carrera Pompey (AAA) Ramirez (AAA) Alford (AA) Smith Jr. (AAA) Several MiLB options that could contribute. Good depth Short on impact players
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 I just found out his name is pronounced Lord-ess. I was saying it like Lords in my head. It's Loor-dess (think "lure dess"), not Lord-ess. The "ou" is the same pronunciation as in French.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 I find it highly unlikely Gurriel contributes much if anything to the 2017 roster. I'd rather let Pompey sink or swim if need be and give Lourdes a full season of development and adjustment time.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Harold Ramirez is a more realistic alternative to Pompey tbh. Why though? Pompey is already on the 40 man, probably a better defender and they both look like they're going to hit with a wet noodle anyway.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Either way, KK is trying to take away from my main point! I don't think Gurriel is going to have much impact in Toronto this year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 2016 Pompey: .270/.349/.353 (OPS .702) over 93 games in AAA Not much XB/HR power for a corner OF Even Pillar was a much better AAA hitter than that Meh

I don't think Gurriel is going to have much impact in Toronto this year. I tend to agree but you never know. He'd have to be very good to justify being anything other than a September call up. He'll have plenty of opportunities to make the roster from 2018 onwards.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 2016 Pompey: .270/.349/.353 (OPS .702) over 93 games in AAA Not much XB/HR power for a corner OF Meh He never had much power, but if he can have OBP of .330 at the MLB level, steal 20-30 bases, play sound defense, that is an upgrade over the likes of BJ Upton.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 2016 Pompey: .270/.349/.353 (OPS .702) over 93 games in AAA Not much XB/HR power for a corner OF Meh Left fielders hit worse than second baseman last year. Obviously someone like Moss is preferable, but seems unlikely to happen. If you're calling up one of Pompey/Ramirez/Gurriel I'm choosing Pompey.

If he looks good in ST I'd give Pompey a solid 6 week stint in the majors to start the season I just lack confidence that he'll stick

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Left fielders hit worse than second baseman last year Wow You know what - These days the AL is pretty beast at the 2B position Pedroia Cano Altuve Travis Kinsler Odor Kipnis Dozier That's a pretty decent number of good hitting 2B at the moment. About half of the AL has a 2B who hits better than league average. That used to seem more rare.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Unlikely but he could be a September call up. Can he make it while still a teenager? Maybe not, but it'd be fun to see.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Atkins implying that they aren't actively looking for another OF. I've been saying this all offseason. Nothing they were doing or saying was indicating that they were going to get another OF. It's kind of infuriating too because it's such an easy way to upgrade the team. I guess they just don't have the resources anymore or they are comfortable with what they've got compared to what's on the market. I'm still hopeful one of two things happens as it appears that a trade for Puig or someone big like that is a pipe dream. (1) They sign Moss to a Colby Rasmus type deal or (2) Pompey shows up to ST and impresses and wins the job and puts up 1.5+ WAR. I guess my one other hope which seems like a longshot is that Upton's tenure with the Jays last year was just a blip on his road to being a useful player again as he put up 3 WAR in roughly 180 games as a Padre. The projections hate him but it's not unfathomable that he could put up 1.5 WAR.
