I've heard this narrative used a lot around here, but if you look how he performed from June 1st on he put a 151 wRC+ with k rates and bb rates in line with his past 4 years. It might of just been nothing more than a bad start, but why use recency bias right?

 

Take out his worst month in any of his previous 4 years and the baseline changes...

I think if he stays healthy this year, he'll be in the same boat as Beltran. Won't be getting 20+ a year but 2-3 year deal worth 15-17 million per

He's likely still capable of a 3-4 WAR season

 

I just don't think any front office will pay him as if they were actually expecting that

Outside of an emergency injury during the game I can't see him playing 2nd. Atkins said it will be corner OF/1B.

 

At 34 years old his range is going to be awful.

Checks roster...yep - Barney is still on the team. We're good. Harrison/Lawrie are really only needed if we use Travis as the centerpiece in a trade.

I don't see any reason Lawrie couldn't play outfield as well. He's really ideally suited as a super utility guy, kind of like a poor man's Zobrist.

Maybe a September call up.

 

If he has a good season, he could be a potential replacement for Barney on the roster next year.

 

Long term I assume they'll be hoping he can replace Tulo and then they can trade Tulo.

He's got to do more than hit well. I don't think they want to use him in a bench role just yet, as he needs some time to develop. Perhaps he will be a September callup like Bobthe4th said.

Think most scouts figured he'd be a 2b,3b or corner outfielder down the road. Has all the makings of a good super utility guy.

They haven't said yet. However considering the 7 year contract investment I'd expect them to see if he can stick at one position with the aim of him starting by 2019.

 

He's played SS, 2B, 3B and LF so I'd guess a utility role is the backup plan.

I think it's some of that but also the FA pool this year is weak. Right now I'd say we're in wild card conversations. Hopefully a couple moves solidify that. I think it's more a case of not over paying for 'marginal' talent this year then keeping that cash flow available so Shapiro and Atkins can put their stamp on this franchise with next year's FA class and have additional depth (prospects) for trades or building blocks.

I agree completely that there's no chance we will be in on Harper or Machado, but they're in 2019. There isn't a lot left or even at the beginning in this year's FA pool when compared to next year's.
