Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I've heard this narrative used a lot around here, but if you look how he performed from June 1st on he put a 151 wRC+ with k rates and bb rates in line with his past 4 years. It might of just been nothing more than a bad start, but why use recency bias right? Take out his worst month in any of his previous 4 years and the baseline changes...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 I can look up WAR totals on fangraphs like a champ! Christ - Barney was too in 200 fewer PA's Bautista 122 wRC+ and horrendous defense Terrible year to look for a big FA contract after
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Bautista 122 wRC+ and horrendous defense Terrible year to look for a big FA contract after I think if he stays healthy this year, he'll be in the same boat as Beltran. Won't be getting 20+ a year but 2-3 year deal worth 15-17 million per

Christ - Barney was too in 200 fewer PA's I do like the idea of acquiring a Harrison or Lawrie type to give Donaldson off days, cover for Travis (though Pearce is there for that too), just generally giving the roster more flexibility. <- owns them in BBDL <- shouldn't own them in BBDL <- hasn't checked BBDL since September

Atkins said it will be corner OF/1B. At 34 years old his range is going to be awful.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Checks roster...yep - Barney is still on the team. We're good. Harrison/Lawrie are really only needed if we use Travis as the centerpiece in a trade.

He's really ideally suited as a super utility guy, kind of like a poor man's Zobrist.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 If Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hits well in the minors, what are the chances he gets called up this season? He is 23.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 If Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hits well in the minors, what are the chances he gets called up this season? He is 23. Maybe a September call up. If he has a good season, he could be a potential replacement for Barney on the roster next year. Long term I assume they'll be hoping he can replace Tulo and then they can trade Tulo.

He's got to do more than hit well. I don't think they want to use him in a bench role just yet, as he needs some time to develop. Perhaps he will be a September callup like Bobthe4th said.

I didn't think gurriel's defense would play at short stop

brianf Verified Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Didn't they say AA? Is a he a shortstop or utility guy? So much questions surrounding this dude Think most scouts figured he'd be a 2b,3b or corner outfielder down the road. Has all the makings of a good super utility guy.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Didn't they say AA? Is a he a shortstop or utility guy? So much questions surrounding this dude They haven't said yet. However considering the 7 year contract investment I'd expect them to see if he can stick at one position with the aim of him starting by 2019. He's played SS, 2B, 3B and LF so I'd guess a utility role is the backup plan.

wamco Verified Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Seems like Atkins is playing the auction draft strategy of saving tons of money towards the end and being able to get bargains
brianf Verified Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Seems like Atkins is playing the auction draft strategy of saving tons of money towards the end and being able to get bargains I think it's some of that but also the FA pool this year is weak. Right now I'd say we're in wild card conversations. Hopefully a couple moves solidify that. I think it's more a case of not over paying for 'marginal' talent this year then keeping that cash flow available so Shapiro and Atkins can put their stamp on this franchise with next year's FA class and have additional depth (prospects) for trades or building blocks.

I would tend to agree with this. Next off-season is the time to make a splash.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I don't believe for a second we will be on the machados and harpers of the world
brianf Verified Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I don't believe for a second we will be on the machados and harpers of the world I agree completely that there's no chance we will be in on Harper or Machado, but they're in 2019. There isn't a lot left or even at the beginning in this year's FA pool when compared to next year's.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 Why can't we just sign a back up catcher, then go and sign Bautista. We can watch him hit 40 bombs and tell everyone how stupid they were being for doubting Jose Bautista and then trade for the bullpen arm that we need mid season.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 I don't believe the machados and harpers of the world will be in on the blue jays so the jays could offer the most years and dollars and these guys would turn them down?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 so the jays could offer the most years and dollars and these guys would turn them down? They won't offer the most years and dollars. I think that's the point.
