Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Opening day projection without any upgrades Upton LF Donaldson 3B Morales DH Tulo SS Smoak 1B Pearce RF Martin C Travis 2B Pillar CF Not good enough by any means. Probably the fourth best lineup in AL East and below average overall That won't happen though.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 That won't happen though. I hope so

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 What would it take to land Billy Hamilton or Jarrod Dyson? The Royals have Gordon, Cain, and Soler in the outfield. Can't imagine it would take a bunch to get Dyson but probably at least one good prospect. Or maybe they'd want MLB help, in which case the Jays might be a bad trading partner. I just want Dyson on the team. Fits the Jays needs and is mad underrated. There has to be a way.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 We can't trade any of our MLB talent because everyone wants SP. We can't trade our prospects because we have a precious few that don't suck Just brig Bautista and Saunders back. Saunders platoons with Upton, Bautista in RF with Pearce and him switching off Pearce Donaldson Morales Bautista Upton/Saunders Tulo Pearce Martin Travis Pillar
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 It might be worth reflecting that the Donaldson, Price, and Tulo trades are currently preventing the team from having much flexibility. Not that I would necessarily reverse any of them, but it's good to remember that Shatkins are trying to build a different model than AA's. AA was at the helm for six years, made at least six heavy duty trades, and only built a playoff capable squad in his final year... a year which still required him to make three blockbuster trades, among others, over eight months. (I still think the 2013-14 teams were totally beseiged by bad luck, but still.)
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 New plan. - Trade for Dyson - Trade for Puig - Trade for Patrick Corbin....(fall back would be Bastardo - who should almost be free) I think there's a decent chance you can get all 3 without give up a significant package of prospects. - Sign K.Jansen - 5 yr $85M - Sign Valbuena - 2 yr $16M (fall back would be B.Moss) - Sign Bud Norris Travis 2nd JD 3rd Tulo SS Morales DH Puig RF Pearce/Valbuena 1st Martin C Pillar CF Dyson/Pearce LF Team is built on defense and pitching and more team speed.
SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 My guess is JB/Revere is the plan now.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 My guess is JB/Revere is the plan now. Wouldn't surprise me. Although if they signed Revere and Moss instead, then I would have guessed right on four free agents in the prediction thread (already got Pearce and Morales). Not that I find that important or anything.........

Governator Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 The period after the winter meetings feels so much less exciting.

Kenley will let the Marlins and Dodgers fight over him for awhile. See if they can't get the Nationals in on him as well.
bowld Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 25 man squad 7 relievers 5 starters C - Martin 1B - Pearce 2B - Travis 3B - Donaldson SS -Tulowitzki LF - Upton / Carrera CF - Pillar RF - ? DH - Morales Bench Back up catcher Barney Smoak Carrera / Upton Gross. That is a 4th place roster at best. Better pray our pitching staff has another strong year

SweetSmellingChacin Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I dont like the approach to the offseason so far. Jays should be taking 1 of 2 approaches: 1) Spend money and-or trade assets so you can improve yourself enough that you can compete for WS title. or 2) Rebuild by trading assets while they are still very valuable (Donaldson, Happ, Estrada etc) Instead, it looks they are trying to build a 80-85 win team that will finish 3rd or 4th in the division. Maybe they are just trying to humour everyone right now and they will dump all their assets midseason when they are .500 ball club.

Let's wait until the spring. Whenever I have a bad gut feeling people get all butt hurt and tell me the sky is not falling and to wait...so let's wait and see what roster we have in April.

But unless they sign EE/JB, there aren't big FAs left available that will make a major difference. It also doesn't look like a big trade is coming given they don't have a lot of young assets and they don't want to move guys on their MLB roster. I feel this offseason was the time to go for it one last time or just rebuild. Being an inbetween team sucks.

Shatkins will build up the farm however they can while fielding a .500 team to keep attendance at a reasonable level. As opposed to a proper rebuild. Assessment is probably the Toronto baseball market is such that attendance will plummet to crazy levels if a Cubs style rebuild was pursued.
puphood Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Both are off with "projections" of returning. When has this club ever been forthright with player health concerns. I guess you have to hope.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Has anyone heard what the market is for Ivan Nova? Much like Happ - Nova was lights out with Pittsburgh last year (1.9 WAR in 11 starts). He'll only be 30 next year, high GB%, low BB%, no draft pick attached and he doesn't seem to be generating a lot of buzz. Could you swoop in and pick him up for 3 years $33M or something? I don't want to trade Stro or Sanchez at all, but I'd love to see what we could get for Happ or Estrada right now.

Gutting the roster now looks pretty bad towards the fans. Going in with a mid 80s win team and seeing what you have in June-July makes sense. If they are a few Games of the Wildcard come July you blow it up and rebuild for 2018-2019. With the amount of talent they would have to trade you could get a ton of young talent, more than the White Sox even got.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 If we don't spend this offseason, the only possible explanation can be that we're going after Shohei Otani in 2018.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 If we sign Bautista, he still keeps 10/5 rights correct?
