crmr Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Honestly I look at twitter daily and 90% of the time his named pop up was on this board. Than the Nats blew their load for him. I'm fine with what I said. Blew their load? They gave up somebody who can't throw strikes
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 As usual, some people are overrating prospects. Giolito is one of those players who could be worth absolutely nothing in a short period of time. Sure he could be great, but his stock has already fallen. I suspect the Nationals know quite a bit more than us about him.
metafour Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 The Nationals were definitely down on Giolito. Velocity down and even at 93/94 he somehow couldn't miss any bats while getting lit up like a Christmas tree.
Lance romance Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 I would like to sign Edwin and revere, try and move smoak for a reliever, go get Boone Logan as well, lack of anything happening is frustrating me!

Signing Edwin doesnt make alot of sense though. That would require Morales to play 1st base on a semi regular basis and Pearce in the OF on the regular.

Atkins is acting like he's the GM of Tampa Bay....

If they did seriously offer him that, it would signal they poorly predicted how his market would unfold, which is not defensible.

They gave him the offer and a timeline, him and his agent took a risk that he would get a better offer elsewhere and that he would take the offer or use it to leverage more money from the Blue Jays. The FO had a plan in place and needed to execute it so they went out and signed Morales for half and less term.

The problem is their off season plans weighed on if Edwin signed or not. They can't just wait all winter for him when there are holes to fill and a free agent list shrinking daily, not to mention with budget constraints in mind. They will come out of this looking fine anyway because no one can say they didn't make the offer.

Do you not think they should do a better job at predicting how Edwin's market will unfold? Part of their job is trying to predict movements in player prices. Obviously they won't be perfect but if they were clearly not even close on predicting what his offers would look like there's a big problem.
Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Stroman being discussed in trade talks with Colorado. Probably nothing to see here.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Rockies I would trade Stroman for: Nolan Arenado Jon Gray Trevor Story (I guess?) Tyler Anderson (maybe?) that's it!

If they could have predicted the market shift, how does that change the offer to him? We wouldnt offer more and if we offered less he wouldnt have signed. You cant wait around, the decisions the FO make today have effects for several years.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 He said the signing of Steve Pearce lowered the chances of signing Edwin I dont know how you can possibly accept comments coming from the FO during negotiations at face value. They are basically saying to his agent "we dont really need EE as much any more so if he wants to play here you are going to have to come down on your high offer". Besides, its not like they cant turn around and trade these guys if they get too many at 1B (looking at you smoak).

They would have waited before signing Morales and/or Pearce. I thought that was clear in my first post. You seem reasonable, so I apologize if it wasn't clear.

It sounds like they are down significantly on their 'high offer' and they aren't grabbing him so I think the comments are honest. You're right though, I am speculating on that honesty. Once he gets signed we will see.

You seem reasonable, so I apologize if it wasn't clear. If our FO predicted it, so would other FO and his agent. What happens if you stall on Morales, he signs elsewhere and so does Edwin? I dont think anyone could have envisioned that EE would be having issues getting an offer in the 4/80 range.

I wouldn't trade him for Story, just because he's probably the most redneck looking guy in baseball (saying something in a league that has Chris Tillman) and he also reminds me of Justin Smoak for some reason which makes me hate his stupid face even more.
