Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 What are you even basing the idea that he's going to be grossly overpaid on? 33/3 isn't that high, he can't play defense but is a good bat and posted two strong consecutive years in a row. Why is he now overpaid relative to what you think he's worth on the free agent market? Yeah, considering Thames just got half that, and a part time player in Jon Jay got 8M (1 year mind you), 11 per doesn't seem that bad.

Ya 11 mil these days is not a lot. He should be a useful power hitter in the next few years and that's all he's signed to be.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 I will say it again Dexter Fowler is not worth 4 year and especially 18 million a year, adding the list of a pick to top it off makes it all a non go for me and at this time not sure the team needs 4 year term players based on our milb system! Again for less years and what 6-8 mill less you can get virtually the same player stats wise, who has been consistent for longer in pagan ! Then take that savings alone and beef up the pen! Heck you might be able to get both Pagan and Gomez on one year deals for that same 18 million! I'd easily take Fowler over Pagan + Gomez if the money is similar.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 He had a wRC+ of 112 against RHP, could be a nice platoon partner with upton tho Yeah I hear ya I just think he gets paid to be more than a simple platoon partner and I see some decline happening due to age.
ChrisS Verified Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 If you were the FO how much salary would you want the reds to eat and what would it take to acquire Votto and Hamilton? Votto is owed 192 mill over 8 years. Crazy to think anyone could get that deal until age 41.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Cot's has listed Morales' yearly salary totals at 10-11-12 and Guirrel's as 0.6-1-1.5-2.5-3.5-4.5-5.4 (with $3m signing bonus). Don't remember reading those breakdowns anywhere else so not sure how accurate it is.

Shpairo said yesterday Gurriel's salary would factor in to 2017 but that its quite small so sounds about right.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Do we have a ballpark of where we figure the payroll will be for this year? By quick math we have ~126M committed for 2017 with holes in LF, RF, Bench, and the BP. If we are in the 160M range, should be lots to cover the holes, but if we are in the 140M range... its going to be really tight.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 I dislike him immensely. I would prefer to steer away from Pagan and his punchable face How is pagan more punchable then Fowler ? Fowler has that Jose Reyes s*** eaters grin about him! How'd that turn out for us? That's what I see in pictures of him. Lol

Comfortably top 10 in baseball is the most specific thing that I recall Shapiro saying, but that probably just means 140 million. Anything more than that would just be speculation.
Gary Verified Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 I see that Ben Revere will be non-tendered. I'd like to see the Jays go after him. He'd be a nice buy-low candidate.

Anything more than that would just be speculation. Purely s*** ball'in numbers here ( don't hate me) but.... We started at 117 I believe and I have to believe Shatkins and the ownership had several payroll decision or Senario's budgeted for So let's assume that they had EE at 20 all along Cecil at what was it 5-6 million, let's say six!! That puts us at 143 mill Now let's say they factored in they 17.2 mill, oh s*** Batz accepted payroll goes to 160 without a blink! Not sure if we would have done both either, but! Now we still need to fill out the roster and need depth most likely costing another 15-18 mill ? So 178 might have been on the books when all is said and done! So if we say they hoped only one of EE or Batz stayed, we have payroll budget of 158 -161 million give or take either way! BBBB the old Drunk misunderstood troll who lives under the bridge in you hate and hearts !!! Lol Thank you guys!!! Edited December 7, 2016 by BigBounceyBlueBalls
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 What are your thoughts on Stephen Vogt? Can be a backup catcher, play LF (platoon with Upton) and 1B. Could see the A's trading him if he gets expensive in arbitration. Would be a nice fit here in the Jays lineup.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 Would actually be nice to make a play for both Stephen Vogt and Sean Doolittle if possible.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 Wellington Castillo non-tendered by Arizona. Mike Hazen doing his best impression of Dave Stewart. Castillo would be a fantastic pick-up. I'm curious if he would come cheap enough to make sense as our back-up, and if he would even settle to be one.

Would he not cost as much as Hunley who I think might be a better pick if the money is equal?

I'm curious if he would come cheap enough to make sense as our back-up, and if he would even settle to be one. Well he'd certainly cost less than 1/6 or else they would have traded him. He's an average framer, average arm, good bat. I'd love to have him but being Russ Martin's backup isn't an appealing job. He'd be smart to go to the Phillies or something. I think we have to go after De La Rosa though. He could be a very good reliever.

I would love to have Castillo as our back up but can't see him settling for a role as a back up. Enough teams out there will have interest in him and be willing to give him a starting gig. As for Rubby, i'd be more then willing to ad him as a b/p arm and spot starter depending on his health. See if he'd buy into the recent success of failed starters being beasts out of the pen.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 Is there a full list out yet Anywhere or like trade rumours will they just trickle out or in?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 Would he not cost as much as Hunley who I think might be a better pick if the money is equal? Why do you say that? He's a horrific framer and the bat isn't much better, if at all.
