I dunno about that... He just came off an injury where he missed most of the season, despite playing well at the end of the season there were serious questions about how he would hold up this year. His arm didnt fall off this year but he wasnt what we really hoped for either. 2015-2016 are a wash.

What? When were there questions about how he would hold up? The end of last year + playoffs proved he had a full recovery from his injury. The injury was to his knee not his arm, he wasn't on an innings limit

Josh Fields is in LA now isn't he? Still love him as a target though. Good job NJH and GD.

f***.

Moss is an interesting name when it comes to platoons..... He has was over .300 OPS against righties..... Could be a cheap option.... Not very familiar with his OF defense

nice, sign me up

I said this before and I am saying it again. Jays will offer Saunders a QO

Some people on MLBTR think we are dumb if we do that.

Did they say what they think he is worth or what he gets on the open market as well ?

Why do you have some posts like this that are normal, and others with 47 exclamation marks acting like a 6 year old who just drank a Mountain Dew Kickstart?

No, I really can't see management doing that. He's in a very similar position to Rasmus was last year - Saunders with a QO on him, with all the other OF options out there, will not find a take from any other team. Thus, if we gave him a QO, he would accept it. And I really don't think that the management would be too fond of signing him for 1/17.

I think if we want him back, we might do like Estrada last year. So if we actually did want him, we could sign him for something like 2/26. But I think there's basically 0 chance that we give him a QO.

Do you think that is fair market value for him?

Dude only made 2.9 mil last year that why this qualifying thing is kinda ******** really?

How does this help teams especially with limited payrolls, bogus!

I think he should be happy with 5.8 to 8 mil on a 2-3 year deal and be happy! :)

f*** who gets a raise of double to almost 5-6 times what they were paid? Hands up? Lol

Based on his overall body of work, I see 2/26 as way too rich for Saunders. As you suggested, more like 3/20 is in the right range. If the Jays make the QO, I see 3 possible outcomes:

1) he accepts, which is bad for the Jays BUT if ownership agrees to at least a 1 year big bump in payroll for a championship run could be OK because it is a 1 and done thing. Remember he did hit pretty well in the post season, so there's that.

2) it diminishes his value on the open market, and gives the Jays more bargaining power to get him for a good 2-3 year contract, something like the 3/20 I mentioned above.

3) he signs with a bottom 10 team which only needs to give up a 2nd round pick as compensation.

My bet would be on outcome 2. This guy was thrilled to be playing for the home country team, and I think nothing has changed about that.

ETA: sorry I just realized after posting, that 3/20 doesn't make sense when a guy can just take 1/17 and then go from there.

So yeah NO QO to Saunders makes the most sense

Well then, we most likely have our corner OF. I can't imagine him refusing 17m a year, open market he's probably looking at a 3/25-30 type deal.

Yep, that's likely the issue, do we want a 17m Saunders on the team? Just forget the QO and work out a 2-3 year deal with him, or even a 1 year deal so he can build up his value.

or even a 1 year deal so he can build up his value.

Saunder's value might be at a all time high right now.

+ A full season-ish

+ All-Star (marketable - throwy word)

+ 20+ HR

+ Highest Hard% for his career

+ 2nd best offensive career based on wRC+

Mind you his WAR isn't sexy but was brought down a lot by his defense and he won't improve on that. I don't mind Saunders being brought back as a 5th OF/DH role. I think he could excel there and provide decent value (1 WAR-ish). Pretty much what you'd expect if you went for a Brandon Moss or Napoli like player.

There are a bunch of 1B/DH/LF types in free agency. Giving the QO to Saunders would be stupid.

He's not even that attractive an option among the FA pool. I'd prefer to make a run at someone with a bit of defensive value before settling for someone like Saunders.

I think it's reasonable to ask if Saunders will improve his defense (at least a bit) with a normal offseason this year.

If he's going to give you good value at 1 WAR you better sign him for about 6M.

Oh for sure! Wasn't advocating giving him a QO. Against it. Wasn't clear on my post, my bad.

I'd bring him back for 5M or less. Maybe a 2 year 10/m with a team option year or one year 5/m with a team option.

I would objectively say that my list was objectively good considering that I didn't repeat a single name from yours, objectively speaking.

After his injury? I doubt it.

Well he was just trying to get the knee to where he could play at all after last year. A full offseason of being able to strengthen it properly, etc could improve his defensive ability a bit. He may never be plus, but if he could get back to only being slightly negative he could put up some really nice value.

Ok. Season over.

Now how do we get the Jays to do what the Cubbies just did for 2017?

Get to the playoffs again and hope the luck goes our way like it did for them.
