Joshtowers Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 If you were given 1000 tries to hit a major league fastball do you think you'd make contact? How about a home run?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Depends if it was Aroldis Chapman's or Jered Weaver's
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I could probably hit Tim Wakefield's fastball if you gave me long enough Actually, holy s***. He threw 72. That's a youth AA fastball.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Yes, if that's all they are throwing.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Honestly, i'm a pretty big puss. I think i would be scared to stand in the box (given it's an average 92MPH FB). So I'll say 0.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I just went 20/20 for contact in the 'fast' pitching machine (low 80s), I know that's not bragworthy but just saying 1000 attempts is a lot... lol

CBlake Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Just try catching one, now that is dam hard, it actually handcuffed me. Years ago when the high school football bowl games were still played at the dome, Jeremy Acardo was working out and between two of the games threw for a bit in the end zone. Got talking to him and before I knew it was down in the crouch position with him unleashing a few, what an experience.

Plays Intercounty and the last time i let him pitch to me (was a few years back) i put on my football equipment and still instinctively backed away. Though i quit baseball when i was like 12 to play football in the Summers.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Where? It was at Darien Lake. I played ball from when I was 5-23 (hardball for about 15 years) but it's been 10 years since I've picked up a bat. It felt especially good when the guy in front of me didn't make contact haha. I really need to get back in shape and play again.

That's cool, I just did houseleague + select from Mosquito through Junior and then played men's league until I broke my arm sliding in to home.

I played AA and the hardest we saw was like 75ish lol. though my friend throws 78 or so. The cages at Playdium are good for speed testing, dunno how accurate the mph is but some get up there.

It's hard to find good public batting cages, indoor ones up here are generally for the elite athletes that have memberships. I always used Bloomington Downs cages growing up, a golf course in Aurora.

I'm disturbed.

I think anyone with good hand eye coordination would time one up to make contact. Like you said, as long as you don't have to worry about changeups, slides, curves... lol then that s*** gets real. I think most of us would have a more difficult time making contact on a good curve ball even with a 1000 tries. then make that impossible if there is 1 pitch on the inner half. We'd all need therapy after some chin music.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 No problem...I don't know how many and if i would get a home run but the last time I played baseball they were throwing low 80's...They made a great baseball academy in Cambridge where I live...every so often you run into a good pitcher high 80''s low 90's some former MLB players and some MILB players. Still good fun... Sometimes a few under hand guys come in...but lights out...can't touch them.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 is their a topic here for your baseball history, playing? I still love my memories thought I could make it...I couldn't by a mile lol. But some of the leagues and coaches are still going...
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I feel like I might be able to get lucky and hit 1 out in 100 pitches if it was less than high 80s. If that was all you were seeing you would get used to the speed. Now depends if it was a pitcher throwing down the middle or actually trying to pitch lol.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Use to play with a guy who got drafted by the Dodgers. He threw 96 when we were 18. I faced him 11 times and had 7 hits. Now, his accuracy wasn't there but I could always turn around a good fastball. I think I could make contact almost every time back then. Today, 150 out of a 1000 and maybe 5 dingers.

He threw 96 with little control and you went 7/11.. OK.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 He threw 96 with little control and you went 7/11.. OK. That man's name? Uncle Rico
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 He threw 96 with little control and you went 7/11.. OK. No, he couldnt paint. He threw gas straight down the can. Lots of guys were intimidated by the pace, I wasnt.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Hit a homerun probably not. I never really hit for much power even though I played rep most of my life 13-18. I had always more of hands swing and shot balls up the middle. The only homeruns I ever hit went to Centre field. People told me it didn't look like I was really swinging that hard but it worked. I did lead my team in walks every year though. If we're talking about an average major league fastball. I think after awhile I could make consistent contact but doubt I would hit for any power. I would really have to try to swing as hard as I can and get lucky. We had kids throwing low 80's in our leagues but generally the command wasn't very good. They said this kid from Ajax was hitting 90 at 17 but nobody really believed him. The only time I faced him he walked me 2 straight at-bats. It would be fun to try though I haven't played organized Baseball in about 8 years. I would love to join a hard ball league. I tried softball a few years ago I didn't really like it. It's just missing way to many intangibles of the game of Baseball I enjoy. If I found a hardball league next summer close to home I would look into it for sure.
ProfessionalAtBat Verified Member Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 1000 tries ? Of course. If Tebow can do it I can do it all night long
