Even if you don't win in scenario 1: if the Cubs repeat this season for the next 7 years but never win a WS and the Indians win this year and then then are mismanaged to also-ran sub-0.500 status for the next 7, which team has the more successful and interesting 8-year stretch? I think it's the Cubs, and it isn't close.

With all due respect you are wrong

Any season where you fail to win the World Series is a failure. It's like having foreplay every night and not getting to finish

What would you rather have? Foreplay everyday for a week but no sex or sex only once a week but nothing else any other day

I agree 100%. my friend's analogy was, would you rather be a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998 - 2006 or the LA Dodgers from 2008 - 2016. My point was that, if you're asking me at the starting point of those two 8-year windows, I'd pick the LA Dodgers 10 times out of 10 because there's the perennial promise of winning the World Series because there's the possibility of multiple championships (Cardinals, Red Sox, Giants, etc.). Nobody in their right mind would choose the Diamondbacks - it's only if you're looking at things in hindsight (as in, the Dodgers don't win this year) would you obviously pick the Diamondbacks, but that's not the scope of the question.

So before game 3 in toronto, do you think they put up a WC champions banner? If they lost the game then it makes no sense, but with the circumstamces now it seems a likely scenario.

I disagree fundamentally with that. There's too much luck involved with 5- and 7-game series to have such a narrow definition of success. Even the best teams of all-time have something like 20% odds of winning the WS when the playoffs start. The Cubs have had a remarkably successful season even if they get swept in round 1.

I consider a failed season to be a sub-0.500 season. We're seeing teams shift more towards this model now: aim for 85-90 wins every single year, because if you get in, your odds aren't much lower than the powerhouse with a 97-win team.

I don't care, all I care about is if they keep showing highlights of the 7th inning ALDS before the game and hopefully inbetween innings as well.

Constant close ups to Elvis Andrus too

I don't think WC champion is really a thing. Most playoff teams don't even have to go through a WC round. I would think it unlikely.

I bet there will be a banner, but it will probably say "2016 AL Wildcard Winner" rather than Champion, which would be very grandiose.

The Rays put up their wild card banners on next season's opening day (the 2013 one was against the Jays) and most teams do put them up because you should be proud to be in the post season.

I guess it's the same a putting up a division banner. It's the accomplishment that got you into the DS. Jays never made the Wild Card before so I'm confused about that part of your quote.

f*** that s*** ew. We need to win the ALDS just for the sole reason we don't put up a "WC winner" banner but an ALDS one lol

I'm just saying the Jays will likely put up a banner in Spring but probably not in front of the Rangers on Sunday who one upped them with a division win.

LOL We're opening the season at home against the Rangers??

WE NEED TO WIN THE ALDS NOW JUST FOR THE TROLL LOOOOOOOOOOL

RC Announcer: "Now fans please turn your attention to center field as we are ready to unveil the ALDS banner that was won against these very Rangers" lmao

That's the part I don't get.

lol no, the Jays home opener is against the Brewers I think? Nevermind, I was just saying that teams who clinch a wild card spot put up a wild card banner because that's how they got in to the postseason, unless of course they win an AL pennant or WS. I don't think you put up a banner for winning an ALDS series...

I remembered them putting it up because the 2014 opening day was against the Blue Jays so we saw them put up the banner on TV.

In lots of cases the Wild Card teams are better teams with better records than some division winners.

Getting to the MLB postseason deserves a banner because the reg season is so grueling. Arbitrary division alignment shouldn't reduce that accomplishment. Last year's 97-win Cubs should have gotten a banner even if the 90-win Mets technically got the much more sought after division title (against vastly inferior competition though). The Wild Card is the 4th seed but I certainly don't think it necessarily means the 4th best team.

The banners should trace the path through the postseason. For '92 and 3, the champs banners already mean AL Champ and Division Champ. With the expanded postseason that's not the case anymore.

#BlueJays sub out Goins and Pompey for Happ and Sanchez in ALDS

No Pompey? Wtf.

Feldman and Tepera are not needed

Bingo, they kept 2 trash relievers instead of a guy who can come in and steal 1 base or 2 with high probability.

2006 World Series Champs the St. Louis Cardinals with 83 wins.

2006 American League East 2nd place runners up with 87 wins and 10 games back of the New York Yankees.... your Toronto Blue Jays!

8 man pen over Pompey for a 5 game series with a day off between games... I know Osuna might not be available tonight but damn.

They should have kept Pompey and took out Feldman.

I suppose they expect Osuna to be out for a while?

If thats the case why even have him on the ALDS roster then, its 4-7 days in length.
