KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Victim of his own stupidity. I have a rule against pitying people like that at a fundamental level Yeah he's a victim of a terrible thought process. He went with a strict adherence to conventional thinking and showed that he was unwilling or incapable of thinking for himself and making a rational decision. I'm not very sympathetic. In the playoffs, you have to manage with urgency. You don't automatically make the kind of ego flattering decisions you make in the regular season (giving your s***** starter a shot at the w, saving your closer for the save). He had over twenty years to learn from his mistake in 1995 and he failed to do so. The more I think about it, the more he I think he absolutely deserves to be fired (just like the last time). He's never going to learn. He should be put out to pasture.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Yeah but it's just so embarrassing for him. I knew he would get skewered in the media, but this is as bad as I've ever seen a coach/manager get shredded. I just feel a bit sorry for him on a human level, to be so publicly shamed like this. If I thought he was capable of realizing his mistake and actually feeling embarrassed over it, I would feel bad. I think his conservative thought process makes him immune to the criticism. He would do the same thing tomorrow.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 In some ways, it was probably a really good thing for baseball. Hopefully all the old dino managers will wake up and learn how to properly use their elite relievers.

I haven't even seen the obvious hot take trying to defend him. I'd love to read one if it's out there.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I haven't even seen the obvious hot take trying to defend him. I'd love to read one if it's out there. From a strategic point of view, it's indefensible. It was a stupid, stupid mistake. But from a human point of view... this poor son of a bitch is getting tarred and feathered.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 lmfao dude hahahahahahaha dead lmfao I've watched it like 8 times today.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I've watched it like 8 times today. The crappy recorder rendition of Titanic is what really makes it hahaha
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Makes you appreciate Gibby when you see how Buck handled Britton.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 What I want to know is, was that made by a Jays fan or an O's fan?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 What I want to know is, was that made by a Jays fan or an O's fan? not enough salt for it to be by an Orioles fan.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Yes, I think Rivera emerged the next season. Tangent: after playing for the Yankees for like 14 years, Mattingly leaves the year before the first of four championships in the next five seasons. I hate when that happens. At least Thomas was still technically a White Sock in 2005.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Thank you Bucky Boy. In fairness, we were really rolling the dice with Grilli. He gave up 6 ER and 3 HR in his last 1.2 innings of work, including giving up runs in his last 3 consecutive games. If he gave up a run (or several), we'd be saying the exact same thing about Gibbons right now. And if Ubaldo pitched well, we wouldn't have said anything about Showalter. Just bad luck (or good from our perspective).

If Grilli came in and allowed two solid singles to the first two batters he faced and Gibby left him in to face Machado, Gibby would be thrown from the CN Tower.

Grilli in the 8th at home is a much smaller gamble than a sudden death inning featuring the heart of the Blue Jays order with Zach Britton chewing sunflower seeds in the bullpen.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 The only guy I feel bad for is Zach Britton. The guy put up one of the best relief pitcher seasons in the history of the sport, and his manager doesn't even let him pitch in the biggest game of his life. An ELIMINATION game. Gotta think he lost all respect for Showalter. I wonder what the rest of the players think about Showalter not letting Britton pitch?
