Mkdaman1818 Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 The home team is just 2-6 in wildcard games since their inception in 2012. However, one of those home wins? Francisco Liriano and Russell Martin were the battery in a Pirates win over the Reds. Russell also hit the homer that sent the Pirates on their way. FYI, the other was the KC Royals beating Oakland in comeback fashion. candymartinez Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 So, playing at home sucks but Martin and Liriano is good. Is this good, is this bad? Can Martin overcome the WC game home team curse? I can't wrap my head around all this new information. Too early in the morning for this, need a coffee.

intrigid Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Well s***, you should have told Gibbons this so he could sit all the regulars yesterday. Now we have a 25% chance of winning instead of 75%.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I really don't think such a small sample size matters
intrigid Verified Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Here's an interesting factoid. This is the first year since 2012 that the 2nd wild card became irrelevant. There are 2 ties for the wild card, one in each league. The teams with the better head to head record will host a game, and the winner advances to the LDS. This is exactly what would have happened pre-2012.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Didn't Grilli pitch the 9th in that WC game that Liriano threw to Martin? Mind blown.
