BTS Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 What looked like a slam dunk earlier now looks like a real question: do you offer Saunders a QO, likely to be in the vicinity of $17M? He's been healthy this year, but has been below average, sitting at 1.4 fWAR thanks to truly awful OF defense. Given that a healthy Saunders looks like a 1-2 win player, and that he has a history of not being healthy, the odds are probably against him putting up the ~2 wins required to be worth the salary he'd get with a QO. I'm pretty sure I'd just let him walk.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Nope. I wasn't comfortable with the QO for him in June, and i'm even less comfortable now.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 the only thing that even gets it into consideration is the tight FA market and the shortage of LHH they have. If we make a QO he takes it. His D is below average; he is a chandelier and his K rate when your other big LHH is Smoak is just not acceptable. The first half of this season will be the best sustained portion of his career offensively. The league has figured him out and he can't adjust. I say let him walk.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Let him walk, sign Pearce for half the price instead. Better hitter, better versatility, better defence.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I wouldn't offer it to him. I'd try to sign him back though depending if Bautista walks. He'd be fine as an OF/DH LH bat. Maybe 1/10 or 2/18.

IF they`re shopping for outfielders in the 1-2 win range, there are some options: Pearce, Moss, Thames?, Davis, Pagan, Jackson, Gomez, Trumbo. Some of those guys will project the same as Saunders and sign for a third of the price.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 At this point, no. His defense is terrible, his health is always going to be an issue, and his offence has been in a tailspin since the all-star game. I wouldn't mind re-signing him at the right price, but he won't be worth the ~$17M QO.

He's a total butcher on defense, much like Saunders, but I'm assuming the former will get some good money to play 1B/DH for some team.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I will make a shrine to Shatkins if we replace Saunders with Pearce @7-8mm per. Swear to Jesus I will.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 No but I think they sign him back cheaper.

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2016 Author Posted September 29, 2016 I will make a shrine to Shatkins if we replace Saunders with Pearce @7-8mm per. Swear to Jesus I will. Given how nobody wanted him last year, and nobody wanted him at the deadline, and nobody in Baltimore wanted to play him after trading for him, it's hard to see how 2/15 wouldn't get it done easily.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I wish it was a safe gamble to get a draft pick but it's not I don't want to be stuck with him for 16.4M next year
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 So are we looking at an OF of Pompey, Pillar, FA signing/ minor leaguer/ Carerra/ Upton?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I would absolutely offer it to him because I think both possible outcomes are good for us. He's an excellent fit for a team that needs a corner outfielder, needs a lefty bat, and has an extreme groundball staff. Perhaps we shouldn't overreact to one year of UZR or RISP data when the track record suggests they may both be outliers.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 There are many much better options at that price tag, though. Not really though. You said Pearce who would be fine depending on how the rest of the team looks. They need some LH bats though as there too right handed as it stands now.

I don't think anyone except that one guy even remotely cares about RISP data. And the UZR passes the sniff test. He was never regarded as a plus defender, then tore his knee up and is now pushing 30. Given all of this, and that DRS also hates him, and that he has looked terrible, I'm inclined to believe that UZR is in the ballpark.

It's really quite strange to me. He seems like an obvious 3 win player if he's full time.

Yeah I don't like using the eye test but he really looks just as bad as Bautista out there
baubau Verified Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Considering Shapiro/Atkins went after Bruce, who likely won't outperform Saunders next season, I have a hard time seeing them pass up on a QO. Mind you Bruce was cheaper, but not significantly so from the QO. Given Bautista likely walks the OF is just Pillar - Upton right now for next season and no promise they'll be able to sign someone else in FA.

The fact that he's LH isn't worth the difference in cost, defensive versatility and the fact that Pearce is a better hitter overall. I know I love Pearce a lot but I think I'm justified. He's a good player.

Its not like the Jays are going to go into next year with Upton and Pompey starting full time.. Upton will be in a platoon and another OF will be brought in.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I was once a huge proponent of it but his second half has been atrocious. I'd rather let him walk and use that money on bringing in other players and resigning Bautista.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Doubt Pompey is starting next year. I don't see how he isn't unless he is traded or craps out in spring training.
