$3M for one of our betters bullpen arms, is a huge bargain.

He's not young but he's cheap and the FA market for relievers will probably be bananas again. Getting better value for the money seems highly improbable.

He's cheaper than Smoak and aside from a few bad games recently, has been one of their better relievers this season. Also, I like his passion on the mound and the energy he displays as an almost 40 year-old who still enjoys the game, and not just going through the motions for a paycheck. I remember when Isringhausen was blowing games in St. Louis, he would just nonchalantly walk off the mound, chomping on his gum, like it's no big deal, he's getting paid anyway.

Speaking of Smoak, what do you think the front office's long-term plan is with him? Regardless if Encarnacion is coming back or if someone else on the team is permanently moved to 1st base, or someone is brought in from another organization, I can't see Smoak being much more than the backup first baseman or an occasional late-inning defensive replacement that he already is.

It just seems odd that the front office would be so quick to resign someone of his calibre when there are plenty of other players they could bring in during the off-season that could replicate or even surpass his production. It would be hard to believe that he would be considered for an everyday position, even as a designated hitter. I read somewhere that he seems to hit better from his natural side, the right side, and has issues with the curve ball when hitting left-handed.

Obviously, the front office sees him as some sort of use, I'm assuming as an emergency plan b to have in their back pocket while they look for someone more productive from his position.

You've answered your own question, in regards to Smoak. The OP isn't normal, Grilli's option is automatic.
