burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Happ will be the only one looking at a suspension and it will be the typical 6 games. I think he wins an appeal. He was never tossed from the game and Bush never received a suspension for Texas throwing at Bautista.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I think it would be amazing. I'm fascinated as to how/why throwing a 95 MPH fastball at someone's back/head on purpose is "accepted" in the sport. I mean Happ had no direct beef with Headley at all, nor did Severino with Smoak. It's really the only random act of violence that is generally accepted. Why is that and how did that come about? I'd love to see someone buck the trend and randomly haul off on the catcher when the pitcher hits him on purpose - or clock the pitcher with a flying bat. I mean if you're pissed off at someone - walk up, tell him that and punch him in the face. If we're going to act like f***ing pussies on the field and randomly throw objects at people - let's try something different once in awhile. Nobody accepts throwing and guys heads. And the second you allow bats to be thrown you can guarantee guys taking full swings in the ribs wouldn't be far behind. I'd much rather wear 95 in the ribs than a bat. Truly bizarre line of thinking.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Funny how that works that just from soft running because they were not going full boar he tore a calf.... Was it only a matter of time? Makes you think

And all because of a grazed HBP from a fireballer who was so clearly lacking control that he walked in a run.

Truly bizarre line of thinking. Fine - I'm off by saying throwing at heads...but throwing at ribs and the back is the "preferred" bean ball location and that act is accepted throughout baseball. I'm just curious who decided that's acceptable - but throwing the bat back at the pitcher isn't (and how do we get to that point). Who gets to make those decisions? Goose Gossage? I mean f***, the Hal McRae barrel roll/body check at 2nd base was somehow accepted back in the day. How does something as ridiculous like McRae taking the SS into left field and/or a 95 MPH fastball to the ribs ever get deemed "part of the game"?

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Brownie wants baseball brawls to go all Mad Max. Think about this for a second.....throwing a ball 95 MPH at someone's ribs is perfectly acceptable and deemed "part of the game". [joker voice] Suggest a player throw the bat at the pitcher and everyone loses their f***ing minds [/joker voice]. It's a little bizarre no? The best part is the reasoning is probably because the pitcher can control his weapon more than the batter and thus is less likely to cause serious injury...It shall only be deemed "part of the game" if you have precise control of your weapon...
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Yeah running from the dugout actually makes me feel a lot more better about it. It could have easily happened on any play really.

I have a bad knee due to years and years of catching and Curling (yes i am one of them) and i pretty much wear a knee brace for any physical activity, but i have never had any major blow outs. Then a buddy of mine is in way better shape then me never has had any issues and he blows his knee running a short marathon.

I think rivalries in smaller leagues years ago probably had something to do with it. Why it's accepted I'll never understand either. I will say however, that years ago when the guy died from a ball to the head, giving batters mandatory helmets probably didn't help the cause. Yes it protects them but perhaps rather than dealing with the issue at that time, baseball's response was literally okay carry on but no more killing each other.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I don't like the idea of not having Benoit, even though I don't think this fight caused his injury (he could have done it on the next call to the pen). The guy was a huge gift from the Storen disaster and a good case scenario if Storen had actually turned it around instead of being flipped. Decent pen arms aren't exactly a dime a dozen on Sept 27, when guys are pretty much running on fumes.
Qwerty Verified Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 what we get with Cecil and Grilli now determines our destiny. It's not as good, but my hope is that we can get up during a few games and utilize a Dickey/Feldman 3-4 inning close. Last year we leaned on Osuna far too much. Cant do the same with Osuna/Grilli. If Cecil wakes up and finds his shut-down stuff and Grilli has the magic from much of this year - I like our chances. I would have been saying the same thing about Benoit despite his success as a Jay. We are deep enough where an injury is more like a replacement. And let's be honest - what we were getting out of Benoit likely wouldn't have translated completely in the playoffs. Its a step back, but not very much.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Gibby on the brawl... http://m.bluejays.mlb.com/tor/video/v1190127183/nyytor-gibbons-discusses-loss-benchclearing-fray/?affiliateId=clubMEGAMENU These quotes cracked me up... "That's just kind of the unwritten rules of baseball," Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin said of the fracas that erupted after Severino hit Smoak. "You hit one of our guys, our MVP guy [Donaldson]. After that, sometimes the ball slips out of the pitcher's hand and for some reason it's even. That's kind of how the game goes." "It's just part of baseball," Happ said. "Nobody's trying to hurt anybody. But balls get away from guys. Balls get away from me, as it did tonight. It's part of the game and people take it different ways and we saw what happened." C'mon man, it's part of baseball... Relax! The game's way cleaner than it was years ago, sometimes this s*** boils over. No one threw at a head or anything(that s*** bothers me), big deal.

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 That's embarrassing. Not only could the old f***s not keep up with the young Red Sox, the geezers are pulling muscles jogging in from the bullpen for a brawl with the young Yankees.

It's similar to the NHL these days. If you lay a good clean check on a star player - a fight MUST ensue.

Gets a ton of swing and miss and doesn't give up many HRs.
