THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Unless we make it to the WS, I think he's gone.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Nah he's gone after this season.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Tough to change the manager if we make the ALDD
Praxis Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 I believe the plan all along has been Terry Francona. This suggestion has been roundly mocked. We'll see.

Why was it mocked? Shapiro and Atkins clearly think highly of him, and if there's a way to make it happen I'm sure they'd like to have him.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Isn't he locked long term with the Indians
Praxis Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Isn't he locked long term with the Indians My understanding is that Francona is signed through 2020 (2018 guaranteed, 2019/2020 club options), but he has a clause that he can opt out of his contract at any time if Shapiro left Cleveland.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 I'd love to have Francona come to the Jays. Me too But he's under contract for a bit and the Indians are doing well I don't see how they would get him any time soon

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Guaranteed fans are going to complain whoever the manager is.. That is the one things that is for sure.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Gibby should probably stay based on merit, but I don't have a strong opinion either way. Anyone who has watched Franconia manage in the past knows that he has a very similar managing style to Gibbons. I'm sure he'd do a good job, but our idiot fans will be in the same place after a year or two.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 The seat is all warmed up for Eric Wedge. Management has shown a propensity for nepotism. Gibby is gone.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Indians manager Terry Francona says he won't use an out clause in his contract if Cleveland President Mark Shapiro takes a job elsewhere. Shapiro reportedly is a candidate to succeed Toronto Blue Jays President Paul Beeston, who plans to retire after this season. Shapiro has declined to comment on the report. Francona said last week Shapiro had made him aware of the situation, which reportedly will be resolved in the next few days. Francona signed a contract extension following last season through 2018 with team options for 2019 and 2020. ''If Mark's not here, there's a time I guess to talk about that,'' Francona said Friday. ''The way it (the out clause) was meant, I would honor. I have no intention of ever using something like that as leverage for another job, because I don't want to.''
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 ^ he's perfectly happy in Cleveland I would be too if I had that starting rotation
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 He migft like the quieter media/market there too compared to Boston
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 While he probably is happy in Cleveland, he made those statements before Shapiro had even left. So quite obviously he's going to say he has no intention of leaving in a scenario which may or may not take place.
West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 He migft like the quieter media/market there too compared to Boston Cleveland blows though, the city is about as exciting as Windsor.
Praxis Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Francona does seem invested in Cleveland right now and in building that young squad, but his out clause is no accident. Probably a lot of us on this forum know how new management can quickly sour a work environment and lead you to move on to (hopefully) sunnier climbs. Here I would think Francona could pretty much have/do whatever he wants with Shatkins in charge.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 He should be, but it's hard to say. He should have never been brought back to begin with, and has proven every year that he deserves to be fired, but he's still here. Rogers is pretty clueless.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Would you say that the majority of Jays fans like, dislike or are indifferent to Gibbons?

Here I would think Francona could pretty much have/do whatever he wants with Shatkins in charge. I've always wondered why this is so hard... aren't there former players out there who know.... 1. Young players can play too. 2. On base percentage is important. 3. Defense is important but the eye test doesn't work all the time. and... 4. the stats show that pitchers are bad 3rd time through the lineup, and may also get injured if they pitch too many innings. Starters - 180-195 innings, 5-6 innings appearances Relievers - 50 appearances 80-90 innings?
Praxis Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Would you say that the majority of Jays fans like, dislike or are indifferent to Gibbons? Genuinely indifferent. He can be infuriating at times with misplaced loyalty, odd bullpen and pinch hitting decisions and being slow to try new tactics such as platoons and changing the batting order, but on the other hand he has made some positive and courageous calls that have won us games and for which he often receives very little credit. I don't pretend to know what his clubhouse management is like, but he seems at least on the surface to have a good working relationship with his star players. He also strikes me as a manager who is straightforward with all his players and most do appreciate this. Personally overall I would probably prefer someone more experienced at the helm, but I'm certainly not one of the 'lynch Gibbons' mob, that's for sure.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Francona would be good but I can't see him leaving Cleveland unless he really hates it there. That team is in much better shape long term than the Jays are.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Would you say that the majority of Jays fans like, dislike or are indifferent to Gibbons? The majority of fans are casuals and the majority of casual will blame the manager for f***in' everything and never really give them credit for anything short of winning the World Series.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 The reason I ask is ... since the Jays are hiking ticket prices across the board ... and taking the "flex" out of ticket packs ... and probably not resigning fan favourites ... maybe they keep Gibbons around (since he's only got one more year anyway) if Shapiro thinks that the fan base overall likes Gibby? (because Shapiro isn't stupid enough to think that a managerial change makes that much of a difference.)
