RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 After listening to Brunt on the radio, I have a new appreciation for this. After all this is what we asked for Meaningful September Baseball. It just happens to be painful, agonising, and up and down.
43211234 Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 We've got outstanding pitching matchups against Boston and the series is at home where we have a 40-28 record (Boston is 37-31 on the road). Estrada vs. Porcello Happ vs. Rodriguez Sanchez vs. Buchholz Easy series win, probably a sweep for the Blue Jays!
CBlake Verified Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 We would rather have what we have right now on this Thursday afternoon or be 9 games out with 15-20K in the building? This weekend is going to electric, enjoy it. The next 3 weeks is going to be a ride.

I'll take that every year.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 I am a little worried about Donaldson's slump. Hitless in 5 games, didn't get a single hit during the Yankees series Hitless in 4 games, with 6 walks over those four games. Last night I only saw one at bat. He got nothing, looked like high fastballs (which he took) and low breaking balls (which he seemed to get fooled on). This was the at bat where he grounded back to the pitcher (check swing) Travis caught in run down -- He probably shouldn't of swung at anything that at bat. He's doing a good job of being patient, but might have to take it to the next level, and just let the guys behind him do their jobs.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Jonn how old are you?? Not a lot of people likely remember implosion 1987 or the lesser known implosion 1990. Take a look at the last week of those seasons. Positive: As implosions go this is rather humane. Get it done first week of September instead of last... the team will fall 5 games out and in 2036 no one will even know an implosion happened. It will be over quick. Monday morning it is done Spanky (Monday morning) - 4 games back of the division, but only 2 back of the wild card, all is not lost -- KEEP IN MIND LADS -- Os and Sox play each other 7 times in the next 11 days. One of them has to lose.. no?? We just take care of our business and we'll be close to either the wild card or division lead in a week. Then there's those 3 in Boston last weekend. They will mean something. We gain 2 games in the next two weeks... then take care of business in Boston. That's all it takes. I like Spanky. I'm not making fun of him. I hope he posts something like this just to get you guys going.... No worries, I get a kick out of these... I lived through 85(you forgot that one), 87... and 90. The elation of 92 and 93... Keep Calm we're 1 game back... GO JAYS GO 2016!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2016 Posted September 8, 2016 Injuries to Whitt and Fernandez played a role in that collapse. That's part of the reason you could argue that the team deserved better (especially considering that Fernandez was injured by an opposing Tigers player). Bill Madlock... loved him as a Pirate... hated him as a Tiger, lol.

Coasting to the division win was cool last year but the last 20 games this year are all going to feel like playoff games. Strap in. Win or lose it's going to be intense and fun as f***.

I don't recall saying the games won't be exciting down the strech. They just made the road much harder for themselves. Sorry that my expectations are higher than meaningful September Baseball.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 Sometimes it is better to achieve something the hard way. Last year we coasted into the post season. Winning the hard way can have a lasting impact. After the 87 season I felt sick for a week. 2016 Jays are not that 87 team. Players throughout our lineup have experienced the playoffs and know what it takes to win. They didnt in 87. This team aint gonna fold, bank on it. Remember it takes time and pressure to make a diamond. Enjoy the ride.
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 sounds like my sex life If you replace "usually followed by epic downpours of heavy rain" with "constantly", you get my sex life. Honestly, the problem is that... well, the offense has been way too patient to a detriment. Watching good pitches go right by. It's nice we're near the top in pitches seen and SwStr%, but being terrible in K% seems to indicate that we're getting nailed looking on far too much. The way we've seen this unfold almost uniformly team-wide has been really bizarre. When that starts happening and our pitching starts slipping even just a little... yeah.

All the key players from 87 were with the 85 team. a) 2016 team - a team that never made the playoffs until they did, and lost a tough ALCS to the scrappy, eventual World Champion Kansas City Royals. 1987 team - a team that never made the playoffs until they did, and lost a tough ALCS to the scrappy, eventual World Champion Kansas City Royals. The 1987 and 2016 team LITERALLY have almost the exact same playoff experiences, almost as close as you could get.

I'd be more inclined to accept this if there wasn't so much in question for next season and the years after. They really do need to make a playoff run this year.

Not sure if you were around in 87 but that team didnt know how to win Thats when they got the Blow Jays moniker. Statement stands.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 LOL at Anthopoulos trading Noah Syndergaard, Jake Marisnick and Daniel Norris away for this garbage product. Any team that gives him a second chance as a general manager should be contracted immediately. Still can't believe anyone defended that clown. And speaking of second chances, it's time to fire that dumb hick Gibbons while we're at it. He didn't deserve to be brought back in the first place.

Will be interesting to see how the team is built in the off-season but if we actually get going this years far from over. Couldn't have gone much worse than this however.

Statement stands. The statement doesn't stand. The 1985 team won a tough pennant race against the yanks, won s franchise record 99... It was all the same players... Stieb, key, Fernandez. Bell, Garfield. They did not lose the pennant race because of lack of experience. These guys are far worse than the 87 team. They will lose because they are old... Basically that's it. Nothing to do with experience. To much experience maybe
EdwinsParrot Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Well..thats an implosion game. Not a single positive thing to take away from this one.
CBlake Verified Member Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 What's going to rally suck if this downward spiral continue is that a sold out crowd for the rest of the season is going to be exposed to it. I really wonder how far it will fall back next season, will nights of 15-20K a night become the norm again.

That could happen if the team does completely fall apart and we don't have a good off-season. Not bringing back Edwin or Jose is going to effect the fan base especially the casuals who make the difference in the great attendance numbers.

jiminy Verified Member Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 I think the pivotal series was actually the sweep by the Yankees. Simply can't afford to get swept this close to the end of the season
