Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 If Kratz isn't being called up I'd say Martin catches Dickey and Navarro catches Estrada Martin has been framing the s*** out of Estrada's piches so no thanks. Navarro is a decent insurance policy. But no way Martin leaves the lineup right now. He will catch everyone but Dickey and DH on those days.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Navarro can catch 4-5 Dickey starts, then Dickey will be left off the playoff roster. What about Dickey feelings?

Also tbh I'd rather have an athletic guy like Martin catch dickey than Navarro. Martin will still get his day off/DH Day just with Estrada pitching not Dickey
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Actually now that I think about it it takes 10 days to recall a DFAd player if he clears or something right? I think that end once the calendar hits September and everyone can be called up regardless, but I'm not positive.
admin Site Manager Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 We have Erik Kratz who also catches a knuckleball, so even if Thole gets claimed as a "chess move" like you guys are suggesting, we still probably see dickey pitch. Actually now that I think about it it takes 10 days to recall a DFAd player if he clears or something right? We probably see Kratz up here regardless and that would be Dickey's battery mate We also have Martin who probably doesn't even have to catch the ball and will still have more value than Thole. Thole just needs to f*** off incase you missed the sarcasm
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 We don't really need Thole on the roster on September 1st. Hes not going to be on the playoff roster. So it's irrelevant. I would still be a little suprised if they DFA'd him though. May as well live with 3 catchers for a couple of days. Our bench is always short anyway.

Also sorry man I still need to send you the thing you asked me about but I was super busy the past couple of weeks (as you probably saw my activity tail off a bit) I should get it to you soon man!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Martin won't catch the Dickster. I think they'll keep Thole around for the Dickey starts and then kick both of them out the door if/when they make the playoffs.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Would be semi-smart for someone like Boston to claim Thole just to f*** with the chemistry... I would love it if Boston did that. Dead weight on their roster. In fact, the Jays should be encouraging Thole's agent to give them a call.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 I've always liked Navarro. Welcome back fatty.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Once Dickey retires, Thole's mlb career is probably over.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Other than that picture with the hat, this is what I remember from Navarro last season:
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Other than that picture with the hat, this is what I remember from Navarro last season: That was probably one of the most entertaining games Jays game I've ever seen, even if the Jays lost.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Anyone else think this could be a replacement of personal catchers? Navarro can catch Estrada, might give Marco a bit of a jolt late in the season. Estrada has been better with Martin this year than he was with Navarro last year and that includes his recent struggles.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Other than that picture with the hat, this is what I remember from Navarro last season: My fondest memory is him throwing off his mask and running to Osuna after the final out in the ALDS
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 No Dickey in the playoffs? f*** yeah. Welcome home, lunchbox!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 “I could see the smile through the phone.” Those were the words of Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins when asked how catcher Dioner Navarro felt about being re-acquired on Friday in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. Grant is Atkins confirmed

Might want to check your facts before posting. They actually compared his numbers during the broadcast last night and they were significantly better with Navarro. He has a sub 3.00 Era and a whip below 1 with Navarro catching.

Right and correct me if wrong but he did say that he preferred throwing to Navarro last season... so he'd be more comfortable and would likely pitch better.

Didn't know that. My point was not to make a statistical argument- if a pitcher likes pitching to catcher A over catcher B, he probably does better with catcher A. Also, it could boost his confidence during a time when he might start to have mental struggles.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1918718 BP framing data: 5th Russell Martin 14th Josh Thole 101st (Last lol) Dioner Navarro

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Once Dickey retires, Thole's mlb career is probably over. Likely, but he might be able to cling on to Wright with Boston, Hanigan's 37 and equally as terrible with the bat.(Wright's Personal Catcher)

flafson Verified Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 To me it gives us another option at DH as Smoak can suck a lot.

vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted August 27, 2016 Posted August 27, 2016 Correct. They still have to be on the 40. Low risk low reward. Hurray.
puphood Verified Member Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I just looked it up and it's pretty atrocious: 210/267/339 His numbers over the last 30 games has been going back to his 2014-15 average which would be a good thing....2016 has been a poor year for him so far.....he's the front offices answer for not going out and getting Votto .........
