gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 smoak and mirrors bat... unless he accidentally runs into one he's not doing anything with the stick All a pitcher needs to do is to continuously flip breaking balls up there and he'll whiff steady, even hangers. Even if you tell him it's coming, he'll still whiff.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 another player taken out by a bad slide into second base? sprinklers, second base, the dugout stairs and the shower.... dangerous work place environment It's kind of impressive that it's a SB attempt that puts Pillar out instead of the hundred possible fractures and concussions he's somehow avoided while playing like a wrecking ball in the OF. We're going to miss Superman, I predict.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Ceciliani is starting tonight and so is Upton. Saunders at DH. Daaaaamn.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I agree. Upton in a corner OF spot over Saunders or Bautista is worth over a full WAR by itself. Smoak's bat (projected 96 wRC+) over Upton's (83) doesn't make up the difference. Also need to factor in EE's defense vs. Smoak's but my lying eyes can't really tell the difference. EE probably better range but Smoak has better footwork and glovework around the bag. I guess the one argument for Smoak getting PT is that he and Upton's platoon splits might make it more beneficial to have Smoak play against righties and Upton play against lefties. I think it's time to start EE 80% of the time at 1B for the remainder of the year and rotate the DH spot amongst the four outfielders. Pompey could play a role in September also.

I have never seen Smoak hit a curveball that wasn't hung over the middle of the plate.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 well Lind is the one in 1st place. And we all know how bad he was when he was here Jon Morosi thinks we should trade for Lind to replace Smoak. He would fit right in!

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I think he said Morneau would be his first realistic option. I heard Lind and McCann but if he said Morneau good for him. If he clears. He makes next to nothing.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I think he said Morneau would be his first realistic option. I wanted the Jays to go after Morneau in the offseason. There was nothing to lose and he wasn't going to break the bank.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 I don't remember Lind being as bad as Smoak when he was here. Lind had an incredibly bizarre career in Toronto. He had a great offensive year in 2009, then was below replacement level for three straight seasons, then became good again. Looking back on it I can't believe they gave him that much rope.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I don't know if they can afford to play Ed every day at first. He should only not start one of the games that are day games after a night game.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 A torn ligament sounds really bad but I guess it's not. Could have only missed 4-5 games but with the 3-man bench they needed the extra roster spot. I can't wait for September with expanded rosters.

He was really just misused I think during the down years. He was always a well above average hitter vs RHP but couldn't touch a lefty, 2009 perhaps being the exception rather than the breaking point.

It takes months for a ligament to heal and it might need to be operated on to repair it. This is really bad if it's actually torn.
