jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Good thing the Jays brought in Melvin Upton Jr. as depth.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Upton all of a sudden is great to have lol.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Did Pompey f*** somebody's daughter. Like seriously...
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Upton all of a sudden is great to have lol. He's really pressing since the trade... 42.4% K, -35 wRC+ (((
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Author Posted August 8, 2016 Did Pompey f*** somebody's daughter. Like seriously... They want him to get ABs and he hasn't really had that many this year. He'll get a September callup I'm sure.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 He's really pressing since the trade... 42.4% K, -35 wRC+ (((Â Maybe he will get back at his former team like he use to torch us while playing for them.
King Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Did Pompey f*** somebody's daughter. Like seriously... Ceciliani hitting .300/.373/.567 over the past calendar month, 170 wRC+. Pompey will be up in September.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 He's really pressing since the trade... 42.4% K, -35 wRC+ (((Â Defensively I mean.... I don't think anyone can match out there in the system.... From what i have hear about Pompey his D is not living up to the hype.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 He's really pressing since the trade... 42.4% K, -35 wRC+ (((Â Well it's not like Pillar has been really great with the bat either, but having his glove range and arm out there instead of a Ceciliani (because you know they won't call up Pompey) or potentially Carerra is great

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Oh f*** I knew he had done something to his hand
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 It would make sense to give Cecilliani starts. Maybe not a straight platoon but some regular starts against righties given Upton's splits and that Cecilliani is a lefty.

Ceciliani hitting .277/.358/.503 vs RHP this season as opposed to 255/286/347 vs LHP. Play Ceciliani vs RHP and Upton vs LHP would be ideal. But I'm expecting Upton to play everyday. #GibbyLogic
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Ceciliani is starting tonight and so is Upton. Saunders at DH.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 It will be interesting to see if Ceciliani will start against RHP. The question is will Ceciliani be able to patrol CF adequately, because we all Upton is the better defender. Maybe start Ceciliani and use Upton late in the game, but take out Saunders and put Ceciliani in LF.
King Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Well how is his defense? Too small of a sample to judge. Wait and see http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9954&position=OF#fieldingadvanced
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Ceciliani is starting tonight and so is Upton. Saunders at DH. This makes sense also. Sitting Smoak and having Ceciliani's bat in the line up instead would be ideal.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I think there's also the ever-present Smoak factor. The guy has been embarrassing at the plate, so a DH rotation featuring the four OFs might still be the more productive arrangement.

I think it's his first step and overall quickness that's in question.  He's a definite upgrade over Saunders, that's a guarantee.

He serves no purpose here, is not good at baseball, and his presence offends me.

This is DCs time to show he's an MLB guy.
Governator Community Moderator Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I was afraid this would happen, he was in a lot of pain on that play.

Upton in a corner OF spot over Saunders or Bautista is worth over a full WAR by itself. Smoak's bat (projected 96 wRC+) over Upton's (83) doesn't make up the difference. Also need to factor in EE's defense vs. Smoak's but my lying eyes can't really tell the difference. EE probably better range but Smoak has better footwork and glovework around the bag. I guess the one argument for Smoak getting PT is that he and Upton's platoon splits might make it more beneficial to have Smoak play against righties and Upton play against lefties.
