reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Gregor Chisholm @gregorMLB 4m4 minutes ago #BlueJays are going with a six-man rotation for the time being. Atkins said Liriano and the rest of rotation signed off on the move. Looks like they want Sanchez to stay in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Estrada has had some back problems this year (which could resurface) so it's a good idea to give him some rest. None of the other 4 are clearly big enough upgrades over each other at the moment so I think it's a good move.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 lame Care to offer more than this?
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Not a big fan. I understand why they're doing it, especially with the added Estrada back issue, but I my gut is telling me the extra day between starts is gonna mess with some of the starters.

How likely is it to mess with some of the starters? You'd think they would be more likely to benefit from it. Starters rest 6 days (or more) many times throughout the season with off days/rain outs etc so it shouldn't be a problem.

Sinker ball pitchers tend to do better with less rest than more, historically. What I've always heard is that the extra day gives them more juice, and because of it the Sinker flattens out a bit. That being said, if there is some truth to it, the most likely to be negatively affected are Sanchez and Stroman.
wamco Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Makes a lot of sense given the personnel. Let's not pretend happ is some horse

Stroman has pitched worse. Even though he struck out slightly more batters, his walk rate was almost 1.5 times higher. These are small sample sizes though. Sanchez = 16 starts on 4 days, 9 starts on 5 days Stroman = 21 starts on 4 days, 14 starts on 5 days

Seanie Verified Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Weird. But good move keeping Sanchez in the rotation. The potential reward is worth the 1-3% (or whatever) increase in a injury risk for Sanchez. This is our last year, potentially, with Edwin, Bats, Saunders.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 I don't think anything has changed. Sanchez will be in the rotation for a few more starts before they make the change. They are probably doing it to give Liriano some time to see how he does.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 I like this six man rotation for now. Can pass over ra dickey ever chance they get I agree Todd. A 6 Man rotation means less of Dickey.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 This doesnt make any sense lol. More rest and power = less movement? More velo = less spin = less movement? Still retarded idk

All of the off days coming up means 6 or 7 days rest for our starters. I would rather skip Sanchez once and give Liriano a 2 start audition. If he fails, then problem solved. If not, then you reevaluate.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 This plan goes completely out the window if an injury happens.

Liriano is making a lot of money and has been around the league a long time. Sure he's having a poor season but you're going to give him 2 starts to decide whether he'll stick? Sounds like a terrible idea.

I'm not saying you cut him or anything, just stick him in the 'pen for a while to sort things out. This is a pennant race, we can't put up with too many sub par performances. He said he's perfectly willing to pitch as a reliever and he'll be a big part of the team in 2017 either way.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 More velo = less spin = less movement? Still retarded idk It's not a new concept. Have heard that argument for decades. Whether it's an old wives tale I don't know... But I'm guessing there has to be some sort of data that would have lead to this argument being raised in the first place. I guess we'll wait and see what happens. Bottom line. Nothing would be better than all 6 performing well.

It seems unlikely that they would trade for him and take his salary and then put him in the pen after two starts. If they're acquiring him at the deadline they must believe in his ability and two starts should not decide whether he'll stick in the rotation. We'll see what happens but IMO it seems very unlikely.

They certainly discussed the possibility. I think everyone believes in him, we just don't have the luxury to deal with a bunch of stinkers down the stretch.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Not sure if this was posted already, but Shapiro had a great interview with MLB network on Sanchez: http://m.mlb.com/video/v1009743783/sanchez-expected-to-remain-in-sixman-rotation/?affiliateId=clubMEGAMENU
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Surprised that no one has brought this up yet, but this is poor use of a roster spot. Unless they intend to give the starters a bit of a longer leash as opposed to Gibbons' auto-pull after 7 innings. Good thing September is coming up soon so this won't make a difference by then.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 This reeks of a minor player revolt with regards to Sanchez heading to to bullpen. Management doing a 180 in less than 24 hrs after the GM flies in definitely has players decision written all over it. It would be interesting to find out who was the most vocal in that meeting, but that probably won't happen till Bats is signed by Dave Stewart to a 6 year 175 million deal.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 I kind of like this. Estrada could use a turn or two where he gets extra rest. Liriano could use as many changes of pace as possible. Sanchez and Stroman both could use some extra rest, I bet. Mostly I like this because with the nature of pitching, six man rotations are destined to not last anyway. This is probably a 6-12 game thing and nothing more. Then reevaluate.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 I agree Todd. A 6 Man rotation means less of Dickey. Also means less of the good pitchers.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Sure hope this idea works for the jays. But could see less of RA Dickey. And give the jays a idea for how the rotation looks without dickey new year. And money to sign maybe Edwin and Saunders Dickey's money will not be enough to cover One of Edwin or Saunders contracts not to mention both.
