2lowitzki Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 I think his announcing style is not really suitable for baseball.. I found him somewhat too talkative.. I know it is good to be talkative in fast paced game like basketball, but not for baseball. And he is using the word 'unfortunately' too many times.. Maybe there are many unfortunate situations when he is doing play by play for the Jays, but still... That's too many. Also, one more important point.. Since 2015, the Blue Jays lost 10 of their 13 games which Matt Devlin did play by play. I remember last year he did play by play during the 9 game road trip before the All Star Break (3 each in Detroit, White Sox, and Kansas City) and they managed to win only three of them (One in each series)
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 The only time a Blue Jays player hit 4 home runs, Rod Black was doing play by play, so maybe Rogers should hire him back!!!
2lowitzki Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Author Posted July 17, 2016 The only time a Blue Jays player hit 4 home runs, Rod Black was doing play by play, so maybe Rogers should hire him back!!! I think Jamie Campbell is a better one Also last year, Rob Faulds did play by play when the Blue Jays were on their first 11 game winning streak (even though they lost two games against the Mets) However, Rob Faulds is even worse than Devlin.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 I like Dan Shulman the best! And I think Buck Martinez sounds better as a colour commentator than a play by play man. It's funny you mention Devlin doing basketball primarily since Gary Thorne has been broadcasting the Orioles for awhile and he used to be the voice of American hockey. And Howie Rose still splits time with both the Mets and Islanders and I think both announcers sound good doing both sports. They're the Bo Jackson's of play by play!

I like Dan Shulman on the ESPN, but Buck Martinez is better on the Sportsnet However, nobody can do better than Michael Kay. I don't like the Yanks, but I like Michael Kay's play by play. "That one is driven deep to right field, THERE IT GOES!!! SEE YA!!!" I think Michael Kay would be good at hockey broadcast too. I also like Don Orsillo, who used to be a play by play guy for Red Sox baseball on NESN. He is with the Padres right now.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 I like the Giants crew of Kuiper, Krukow, and Jon Miller. Kay sounds like a very fair announcer and not as much of a homer as you would think a new york announcer would be. Before the baseball package ever included sportsnet in the states, every blue jays game was televised on the other team's broadcast so i got used to hearing the yankees and red sox announcers frequently even though the teams would frequently beat up on Toronto. I always liked Jerry Remy's new england accent. Nomaw Gawciapawa!
Jonzo Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 Am I the only one that thinks Jerry Howarths home run call is pretty terrible? "Yes sir, there...she...goes.." Ugggghhh, so s***.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 Good Job OP. Reedjohnsonfan would be proud.
rancher Verified Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 Devilin has a very boring monotone voice, not suitable for play by play announcing. Hopefully we won't be hearing him much more doing Blue Jay games.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 This thread wouldn't exist if the Jays won those first two games against Oakland.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 Yeah you would think they'd bring on someone like Campbell or even Mike Wilner for the times Buck Martinez is away.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 I don't know how to describe it, but his style or voice is too...aggressive, authoritative, intense? for baseball. It might play well in a packed Skydome, but not in a crap hole like O.Co where it sounds like there's one lone speaker in the corner somewhere piping out walkup music and PA announcements.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 His voice works for basketball in other words. It really doesn't
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 It really doesn't Eh I've heard far worse than him in that department.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Is it just me or does it seem like the first 6 posts or whatever is the same guy logging on to different accounts and having a conversation with himself at 3 in the morning? I was just making a sarcastic response to the guy who said that teams play differently based on who's broadcasting them. I wish mlb had an option to completely turn off the broadcasting and just have the sounds of the game with the graphics on the screen, just like they do with the condensed games.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 anything but a combination of Buck and Tabler... the old Pete and RePete act is f***ing annoying as hell. I'd take Matty D every game the rest of my life if it meant not having to listen to the Echo chamber ever again.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Can a mod change the thread title to "2lowitzki should never start threads again."
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Tabler makes every sound bad. Joe Siddal and Buck by themselves were actually really good, Tabler ruins everything I don't know why they keep renewing him.
Oaktown Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 not in a crap hole like O.Co where it sounds like there's one lone speaker in the corner somewhere piping out walkup music and PA announcements. Two things and then I will disappear forever: 1) Bite me 2) I was told by my Canadian friend, who was watching the game in Toronto while I watched it live and in person, that this Devlin guy referenced Terry Steinbach so he's doing a fine job.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I actually enjoy Devlin... Same. The slow and boring baseball commentators just lul me to sleep and always have. I've never been a fan of Vin Scully for that very reason. I'm all for guys like Devlin and Shulman who actually inject some hip charisma into their broadcasting.
intrigid Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I wish Sportsnet would just sign Dan Shulman to a fat-ass multi-year contract, then we could put this entire discussion to bed. The TV ratings certainly seem to justify it. I mean how married could he be to that Sunday night gig.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I don't mind any of them to be honest. But, Buck getting old and messing up home runs/fly out calls is really annoying. Maybe if Shulman can work on his home run calls, he would be a winner for me.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Maybe George Stumbolopopus he is availible I hear!!!

He was on Prime Time Sports when the season started, he said that the he is under contract with ESPN for a long time.
