Governator Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 I think you can pretty much just disregard both the Dickey effect and Josh Thole when discussing Dickey's value. The opportunity cost of committing to a sub-replacement level backup catcher is probably close to a win if you feel the FO can identify and acquire a 0.5-1 run backup C. The point remains though that Dickey is a durable league average SP and the only valid reason for not wanting him back on a 1/8-10 deal is "I hate watching him". and I still hate watching Thole too.

I don't think it's likely that we will get that kind of catcher without paying market value (like Navarro) or giving up assets. I looked at the top 60 catchers in playing time last year and the bottom 30 totaled 1.6 WAR (ie. replacement level, just what you would expect). I'm sure there's a potential Chris Stewart out there, but I wouldn't bet that we get him.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Haha, I read "hear me out" and gave up. How about no and we get 2 roster spots that will both become more productive. Dickeys and Tholes.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 So much hate for the guy who got the decisive hit in the final game before the AS break. Tough crowd. Yeah well he had a wRC+ of 8 going in to that game. Decisive or not, he only has 11 hits all season.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Yes, yes, yes, been saying it for ages.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Improving on a 4.5 xFIP and Josh Thole should be a fairly easy task. I say no. RA9, Statman.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Wondering if the thread would be more stimulating with the verb "prolong" instead of "extend" in the title?
wamco Verified Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 See how year plays out, offer an appropriate contract. If he walks, he walks. Way more risk than reward at 41 unless you are big papi . Am I the only one that thinks he is obviously on ped (again, still). If we learned anything from the roid era it was that if it seems to good to be true than it is.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Yan Gomes was the perfect kind of guy as the backup catcher (before his breakout, or the last year or so). Could play multiple positions with average or better defense, along with catcher. He could have been basically the Zobrist of the catching and corner infield world.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Spanky? Is that you? Suck a fart.

Gomes sure has fallen off a cliff, worse WAR than Thole. I wonder what happened.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 This is what Charlie Hough looked like in his last MLB season. Knucleballer don't really need PEDs.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Gomes sure has fallen off a cliff, worse WAR than Thole. I wonder what happened. True, but not as bad a fall as Esmil. Yan has battled some injuries. C is such a hard position.

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Is he not considering retirement at all? When he gets BTFO a couple starts in a row people will be calling for his head again. He needs to move to the national league if he wants continue playing I think.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 If nothing better available, yes As a bridge to SRF or whoever, Dickey would be fine
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 I think Dickey's tenure here might be done. If its been 5 pages and nobody has made an 'extending your Dickey' joke, then he is probably tapped for this market.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Backup catchers don't have to be great, but would Thole even be in baseball if it wasn't for Dickey? He's not a very good catcher in general and can't even hit minor league pitching anymore. Dude is done being a MLB quality back up and has been since 2011. Even a replacement level backup catcher would be better than Thole.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Thole is terrible. Banishing Dickey accomplishes 2 things.
admin Site Manager Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Dickey has been pretty consistent, but his age is going to catch up to him very soon, maybe not next year, but there's a good chance it will. He's going to be 42 this year. I'll take the odds of him pitching poorly next year rather than signing him and hoping he can continue doing what he's been doing.

I was still multiple ejaculating at 42.

If past knuckleballers are any guide, there's no reason to be all that concerned on a short term deal. His velocity hasn't dropped at all and he's as healthy as anyone.
