Should we extend Dickey?

I think you can pretty much just disregard both the Dickey effect and Josh Thole when discussing Dickey's value. The opportunity cost of committing to a sub-replacement level backup catcher is probably close to a win if you feel the FO can identify and acquire a 0.5-1 run backup C.

 

The point remains though that Dickey is a durable league average SP and the only valid reason for not wanting him back on a 1/8-10 deal is "I hate watching him".

I don't think it's likely that we will get that kind of catcher without paying market value (like Navarro) or giving up assets. I looked at the top 60 catchers in playing time last year and the bottom 30 totaled 1.6 WAR (ie. replacement level, just what you would expect). I'm sure there's a potential Chris Stewart out there, but I wouldn't bet that we get him.

Yan Gomes was the perfect kind of guy as the backup catcher (before his breakout, or the last year or so). Could play multiple positions with average or better defense, along with catcher. He could have been basically the Zobrist of the catching and corner infield world.

Is he not considering retirement at all? When he gets BTFO a couple starts in a row people will be calling for his head again. He needs to move to the national league if he wants continue playing I think.

Backup catchers don't have to be great, but would Thole even be in baseball if it wasn't for Dickey? He's not a very good catcher in general and can't even hit minor league pitching anymore. Dude is done being a MLB quality back up and has been since 2011. Even a replacement level backup catcher would be better than Thole.

I'll take the odds of him pitching poorly next year rather than signing him and hoping he can continue doing what he's been doing.

If past knuckleballers are any guide, there's no reason to be all that concerned on a short term deal. His velocity hasn't dropped at all and he's as healthy as anyone.
