A sellout crowd of 17,232 was ready to explode as the Herd loaded the bases with two out while down a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, however Giovanni Gallegos needed just one pitch to record the save as the Rochester RailRiders hung on for the 3-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Field Sunday evening.

Domonic Brown got the late attack started as his routine fly ball to right field was dropped by Cesar Puello. Two batters later, Casey Kotchman flared a ball for a single to left and both runners moved up as Tony Sachez drew a walk to fill the bags.

Alexi Casilla jumped on the first pitch he saw from Gallegos and hit it hard but not deep enough, and could only watch as Jose Rosario deposited the ball in his glove to end the contest.

With scheduled starter Drew Hutchison in Toronto, it was up to Buffalo's bullpen to try snap Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's seven-game winning streak - a daunting task against the International League's top offense.

Making his first start of the season, Pat Venditte had an elevated pitch count early, needing 39 pitches to get through the first inning, but managed to work his way through two more. The ambidextrous hurler gave up a run in the opening frame and nothing more as he worked out of a few tight situations, scattering four hits and a walk around three strikeouts.

"Venditte had too many pitches in the first. If he could have eliminated that, he probably could have gone out there another inning," said manager Gary Allenson.

"He wanted to, but that's not the point right now."

Ben Rowen took the bump for the Bisons to begin the fourth inning and the RailRiders' offense greeted him with three straight singles to take a 2-1 lead. Donovan Solano then ripped a double into the right-field corner to plate another run.

The submariner then settled in, retiring eight of the next nine batters before turning the ball over to Bobby Korecky who hurled a 1-2-3 seventh in his first appearance since May 17th.

Danny Barnes and Ryan Tepera each fired a scoreless inning to keep the Herd within one run.

Buffalo scored in the second and the fifth, both runs coming on a couple of unorthodox plays.

Jesus Montero started the second frame with a single to right and advanced 90 feet on Brown's infield hit. Montero was then nearly caught when shortstop Jonathan Diaz took the pickoff throw at second, but instead of retreating to the bag, the designated hitter put his head down and charged for third.

By blocking the base path, Montero forced a wide throw and was able to scamper home as he saw the ball trickle away.

"You don't have to be fast to be a good base-runner, you just have to stay within your limitations and your ability. He had a good reaction on it and got in the way of the throw and got something going when the offense wasn't doing anything," noted Allenson.

Learning from experience, Montero knew what he had to do to get his team on the board.

"That play has already happened to me two times," said the big Venezuelan.

"When that happens, I try to go to third base because I know I'm trying be hit, that or I'm going to be out. When I saw the ball go toward left field, I went home. It was so funny."

The Herd scored its other run on a passed-ball strikeout to Darrell Ceciliani as Casey Kotchman was able to make it home, bringing the Bisons to within one run.

Montero picked up another hit later to give him 95 on the season, putting him one back of Indianapolis' Josh Bell for the I.L. lead.

Now credited with his first stolen base of the year as well as a few unfamiliar plays under his belt this season, the jovial slugger still feels like he's not finished trying to new ways to generate offense.

"Maybe I'll bunt."

The Herd heads back out on the road, beginning with two games in Rochester on Monday.

BISONS NOTES:

Prior to Sunday's game, the Bisons activated reliever Bo Schultz who was optioned back from Toronto on Saturday...In a corresponding move, Roberto Hernandez was granted his request to be released. The righty was 4-4 with a 4.42 ERA in 13 starts for the Herd…Ben Rowen allowed a run to score for the first time since May 8, bringing his scoreless streak to an end after 23.1 innings…Bobby Korecky has appeared in seven BPO Independence Eve games. Three came while a member of the Red Wings from 2006 to 2008, the other four have all come in the last four seasons as a Bison.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Despite two hits and three steals from Roemon Fields, the Fisher Cats dropped the series finale to the Binghamton Mets, 3-1 on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. The teams split the six-game set with three wins apiece.

For the fifth time in six games, the Fisher Cats scored in the first inning. Fields ignited a one-man rally, reaching on a bunt single and advancing to third with a pair of stolen bases. Ryan Lavarnway knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 advantage. The run came against Mets MLB rehabber Jim Henderson.

Mets right-hander Josh Zeid took over from there. Through the next seven innings, he held the Fisher Cats scoreless on two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters.

New Hampshire starter Shane Dawson struck out a season-high seven hitters in five innings, working around four hits and four walks, and left with the score tied tied 1-1. Binghamton's first run came across on a double from Jayce Boyd and an RBI single from Maikis De La Cruz in the second inning.

The eventual game-winning run was plated on a wild pitch in the seventh. De La Cruz reached on a walk, moved up on a sacrifice bunt, got to third on a groundout and came across on the errant pitch to make it 2-1. A sac fly from Xorge Carillo gave the B-Mets an insurance run in the eighth.

Fields collected two of New Hampshire's two hits - both bunt singles - and came home with their lone run.

The Fisher Cats will return home on Monday, July 4 to begin a four-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs. Each game will be followed by an Atlas Fireworks Show, including a Mega-Blast Atlas Fireworks Spectacular on the Fourth of July.

The top two prospects in the Red Sox organization, Yoan Moncada and Andrew Benintendi, are currently on Portland's roster.

Sean Reid-Foley's great second stint with Class A Advanced Dunedin rolled on Sunday.

Toronto's No. 3 prospect allowed one hit without a walk and struck out nine across 7 1/3 innings to lead the Blue Jays to a 1-0 win over the Tampa Yankees at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. It marked the third start out of his last four in which the right-hander worked at least six scoreless innings. But Reid-Foley was more proud of one of his other glowing stats.

"No walks," he said. "When it is my time to pitch, I just go out there and want the guys behind me to feel like we have a good chance to win the ballgame."

Reid-Foley (3-0) retired the first 13 hitters he went up against, five of them via strikeout. Abiatal Avelino's one-out single to right field in the fifth inning was the first time the Yankees put aboard a runner.

"I wasn't aware that I hadn't allowed anyone on base," Reid-Foley said. "I am just trying to get through six innings. The more innings I can get through, the more it helps the staff here. My changeup and curveball were really good today, and at times, when I needed it, my slider was working too."

The 2014 second-round pick didn't lose any steam after that, setting down the last nine hitters he faced, including getting Avelino to ground out for a fitting end to a strong start.

"I really established my fastball and that's what helped me get into good counts," Reid-Foley said. "Having that kind of just took care of everything else. Now when I've been getting ahead, I've been putting batters away or getting them to ground out. I've been establishing the bottom half of the plate with my off-speed stuff."

The Blue Jays promoted the Guam native to Dunedin after he amassed a 4-3 record and a 2.95 ERA over 11 outings for Class A Lansing in the Midwest League. The 6-foot-3 right-hander has responded with a 0.68 ERA and a 32-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio across four starts.

"[Lansing pitching coach] Jeff Ware and I worked a lot on perfecting my delivery and repeating it every time," Reid-Foley said. "We all know it's not perfect, but the more we can repeat it, the better results I'll have. I think that's the biggest thing we've been able to do this year in my development."

Colton Turner took over in the eighth, allowing a hit and striking out a batter to close out the frame. Carlos Ramirez gave up a hit and walked a batter, but closed out the game for his ninth save.

Shortstop Richard Urena provided the game's only run, plating Aaron Attaway with a single in the sixth inning.

Josh Rogers (5-4) gave up a run on four hits and struck out five across seven innings for Tampa.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Max Pentecost blasted two home runs, but the Lansing Lugnuts (7-4, 43-38) fell victim to a four-run eighth inning, losing 5-3 to the South Bend Cubs (9-2, 50-30) on Sunday night at Four Winds Field.

The Cubs had not allowed a home run since June 12th… before Pentecost, the 11th overall pick in the 2014, cracked a two-out home run to left field off starter Adbert Alzolay in the first inning.

Pentecost victimized Alzolay again to lead off the seventh, breaking a 1-1 tie with his fifth home run of the season. Four batters later, a Juan Tejada RBI single built the lead to 3-1.

But the Cubs awakened in the eighth, putting runners at second and third with one out before Tyler Alamo dropped a broken-bat double down the right field against reliever Starlyn Suriel (Loss, 4-2) to tie the game at 3-3. Eloy Jimenez drew a walk, and Eddy Martinez broke the tie with an RBI flare to right. Adonis Paula's sacrifice fly supplied the final margin.

The rally dealt starter Ryan Borucki a no-decision, despite another strong performance. Borucki was charged with three runs in 7 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, walking none and striking out eight.

In his South Bend return, reliever Dillon Maples (Win, 1-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.

Craig Brooks struck out the side in the ninth to notch his fifth save.

The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium for Independence Day, opening an eight-game homestand Monday. Gates open at 5 p.m., 50% off all drinks and free inflatables from 5-6 p.m., and a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from right-hander Jordan Romano (1-0, 1.42) against the Dayton Dragons. A LAFCU Fireworks Spectacular and the City of Lansing Fireworks will follow the game.

Wow Tellez was human today. You rarely see him strike out 3 times. SRF continues to be an absolute stud the comments post game hinting towards pitching to contact kind of annoys me but he still had 9 strikeouts so how mad can one get. Bottom line he looks like an absolute stud. Love this guy.

Wow Reid-Foley is dominating A+. Where did most people have him ranked in our system before this year? Was he projected to be good, or just took off this year.

Amazing that he cut his walk rate in half from last year.

Pretty exciting following Biggio too.

Nice. He's gotta be #1-2 next year if he keeps this up I'd guess.

Him and Tellez are definitely 1 and 2 now.
