Fangraphs 2016 Broadcasting Rankings Released

The TV team came in 53rd out of 62. Not sure how big of a factor Shulman played in this.

 

The Radio team came in 17th out of 62.

it's my first full season with mlbtv and so i've been listening to our opponents' tv commentators doing Jays games, and i've enjoyed San Frans crew of Kuiper & Krakow the most.

I actually don't mind our broadcasting crew. I like that they aren't total homers, or talk about food for innings on end ignoring the game. And while they're way short on the analysis side, I don't need them for that.

Our TV crew is terrible. Shulman is great but Buck isn't very good and Tabler is AWFUL. I don't know a ton about all of these crews but 53rd seems about right for us.

I agree Tabler is the main problem. Buck makes a shitload of mistakes but he does have at least a little charisma and for the big plays he's usually fine. Tabler is just trash.

Radio crew is 13 of 32.

Heard an interview with Jim Palmer this week from the O's crew. Only thing he talked about in terms of reviewing a few starters was how many wins they had and ERA. He didn't mention anything else.

 

I know he is 70 and had a lot of success, but it does amaze me that someone wouldn't beef up their analysis with some of the tools that are available now. "Wins" has got to be the most over rated stat for SP available.

 

It actually annoys me now when people say "X team has to get him the runs to get him the win, or he isn't in line for the win and can only lose" etc etc.. Obviously the goal is to win, but its a team game with so many variables.

I don't think so. He is just so good at weaving in interesting stories to the natural flow of the game, and yeah, that's a skill that is likely borne of his enormous experience. I used to feel the same way you do but IMO Scully calls games with an almost perfectly intangible quality...doesn't over analyze, doesn't get over excited and he just has that classic voice.

For some players, it has to do with a kind of self preservation instinct vis-à-vis their own legacies. Jim Palmer's claim to fame is his his run of 8 twenty win seasons in 9 years. He doesn't want to be told that his most famous accomplishment is kind of meaningless. Jack Morris is the same way. He's clutching on to that whole "most wins in the 80s" thing even though that's just a quirk of arbitrary endpoints.

The Radio team would do better if they didn't have a rotating s*** show to get Wilner into the fold who sucks ass, he doesn't have a voice for play by play and screams HR calls. Just give me Jerry and Siddall in the booth and keep it good. I hate both Buck and Pat which is why I usually just watch the other teams broadcast.

Jerry is far superior. He has a better voice which is more smooth and consistent. Wilner isn't terrible IMO but it's like you said, he doesn't have a great voice and when he screams home run calls his voice cracks.

I listened to the Tiger's TV broadcast our last series and really enjoyed it. They seemed very fair and had no problem tooting our horn with various stats. They didn't talk much when things weren't happening with filler but not dead silence like White Sox. Got to listen to the actual game which I prefer.

Thats a good point. His other big "claim to fame" with some is that I don't think he ever gave up a MLB Grand Slam HR. "An innate ability to limit the damage" some would say lol
