jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 It will take 3 wins to clinch a wildcard spot. If we win 2, Detroit wins all their games left, and Baltimore wins at least 3 of 4, then all 3 teams are at at least 89 wins. In that case we'd have tiebreakers to deal with. Part of the problem at this point is that Detroit is playing a s***** Atlanta team for 3 games, and even Seattle plays a s***** Oakland for 4 games. Boston is still going to be trying to win to stay ahead of Cleveland to secure home field in their series. We're basically guaranteed a tiebreaker game at this point, but I would definitely much rather only have to play 1 game to advance to the ALDS than have to play 2-3. Those three wins vs. Atlanta cannot be guaranteed for Detroit--Atlanta is 15-9 this month, plus Detroit has ZImmermann, Farmer for the 1st 2 games, with Verlander Sunday vs. Teheran.

The chances of the O's winning 3 of 4 are slim.. Yankees have played Baltimore hard, plus it's at Yankee Stadium. And it's Gallardo and Miley for two of the games..
UWHabs Verified Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 We're still in a much better shape than Baltimore or Detroit, no question about that, but we're still only about 90% chance to make the wildcard game.

If Toronto, Baltimore, and Detroit are tied.. Let's see what happens Toronto has edge on season series against both teams (10-8 against the O's with one more to go, and 4-3 against the Tigers) Baltimore has better record against Detroit, but not Toronto (8-10 against the Jays with one more to go, and 5-2 against the Tigers) Detroit do not have better record against neither teams. (3-4 against the Jays and 2-5 against the O's) So Toronto and Baltimore both won the series against Detroit, and Toronto already has better record against the O's.. So that means Detroit and Baltimore would have to play a tie-breaker game (maybe in Baltimore) and the winner will face the Jays at the dome.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 So here's the situation: 1 win and 1 Detroit loss--Jays clinch a tie in the 2nd wild card 2 wins - Jays clinch a wild card 3 wins (or 2 wins and 1 O's loss as the Jays hold the tiebreaker)- Jays clinch 1st wild card. Either way, barring a meltdown, we're playing a wild card game next week. Especially with the Red Sox unlikely to have many regulars in the lineup with likely no chance of catching Texas for best record. What? If the Bosox win tonight they're 1 GB...

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Cecil: 3.00 FIP and 2.13 xFip over the second half, 21 innings. Should he be used more?
CBlake Verified Member Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Simply put the Jays win, nothing else matters.

I don't often agree with Kevin Barker, but when I do, I must be really pissed off. I remember a lot of our early pen losses came from the ineptitude of the offense to score in the latter innings. It'd be a tie game and the bullpen would give up 1 run over 3 innings or something but the offense couldn't score so the bullpen got the loss.

I was peaking into the UFA market and forgot how many relievers are UFAs - Chapman, Jansen, Melancon. Given how much Miller got, Ounsa could get a decent piece from say ... the Nationals if they can't sign one of those 3. Osuan for Robles would be nice for the future.

The pecking order as of now should be: Osuna Cecil Biagini Grilli Barnes Loup Tepera I'm pretty sure that Grilli will blow another big game before the season ends. Either one of the games in Boston, or the wildcard game itself. Gibby's refusal to adapt is totally going to f*** us.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Just thinking about it.. our team will look a bit different next season except for most likely the starting pitching. Might lose: Dickey Thole Bautista Edwin Saunders Grilli Cecil Gibby Hale Hitting coach #1 Hitting coach #2 I'm sure I missed a few as well. Just interesting that after a few years with virtually the same team we could be really different at this time next year.

Interesting to see if they try for a mini run around Donaldson last year, or just f*** the whole thing and go Cubs style... I honestly would not be opposed to the latter option.

I'd like to see them go for it around Donaldson but there probably won't be enough to help him offensively unless we get creative/lucky.

I'd be extremely opposed to that. We have a playoff team, decent farm, and high payroll. There's no need to tank.
