Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 giambi should give the award back for obvious reasons. Why? Even if he was a by-product of the era he played in, his offensive numbers were off the charts for one of the best league-wide offensive seasons in baseball history.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I wonder if Casey Kotchman will be a September call up, since he played in Cleveland under Shapiro, to give him some big league action after being in the minors all season.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 2011 Bautista >>>>> 2000 Delgado People forget how good Bautista's 2011 season was, he led the league in Homeruns, walks and slugging Delgado's 2000 season he only led in doubles, mind you Delgado was second in almost all categories that year. Olerud's 1993 season was special. he led the league in average, obp and ops. Had OPS plus of 186. Just looking at his career numbers, its amazing how good he was and how unrecognized. Career obp of almost .400. Today Olerud would probably be consider Altuve level.
STLJaysFan Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 That's crazy that Erstad hit .355 with 240 hits and didn't even win the batting title. Nomar 17 points higher.

Everything was juiced in that era. The ball, the bat, the players. Brady Anderson had a 50 homerun season, jose cruz jr had 40 homerun seasons.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I smell another sweep for the jays in Baltimore. They are throwing out 3 god awful pitchers in a row for the series, while the jays roll out Estrada Happ and Sanchez. Woot to a 6 game win streak! It would be nice to wipe the O's from contention for good, as they should be.

When you're comparing two different players and who's season was better you don't compare what they led the league in to say their season was better. Or maybe you were just stating it I dont know.

This yr we have payed two more games and have won them both for a record of 74-56. Doing this comparison a month ago (pre-trade deadline) July 28 2015 Our record was 50-51, compared to 57-45 at the same time this yr. We went 17-11 (.607 wpct) and still squandered a 6 gm lead over last year's team (technically we were still a game back last yr, but we won the next two games cuz why not) Don't think I fully appreciated the insanity of last yr's run until now.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I was busy this whole weekend, so I couldn't watch Liriano, Dickey and Stroman pitch. the scores were pretty alarming - any concern about the pitching going forward?

Liriano got into trouble due to too many walks. He wasn't particularily sharp. Dickey the same problem. Stroman actually pitched really well, but ran into terrible BABIP luck. A ton of ground balls in the infield that snuck through short and third.

Nothing's changed. Stroman's fine. Dickey and Liriano are extremely unreliable. Liriano should be our LOOGY for the playoffs. Dickey can grab some popcorn.

Neither Dickey nor Liriano look playoff rotation worthy. It will be interesting to see what the team does. There's only enough quality pitching for a three man rotation unless Sanchez makes starts.

Biagini has been great.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Liriano got into trouble due to too many walks. He wasn't particularily sharp. Dickey the same problem. Stroman actually pitched really well, but ran into terrible BABIP luck. A ton of ground balls in the infield that snuck through short and third. Good summary. Liriano just looks like he completely looses his release point on the FB. So many outside the zone up and away. Repeatedly. There was a lot of fapping about his new 4S FB after one good start, but not much after this last outing. He has the stuff to be a playoff starter, but it will be a nail biter. Id rather send him out than RA. I remember the Jays in 92 and 93 WS starting an aging Morris, Dave Stewart and Todd Stottlemyre giving me the same kind of feeling.

Biagini has been great. Shame about Hendriks though. He's bounced back from his rough start and looks very Hendriks like. Ratios are only a hair worse than last year and Chavez was a bust.

Biagini has been great. This front office has made some great frugal moves so far The only sizeable financial gamble was Liriano and even there it's balanced by picking up two good prospects and it's short term

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2016 Author Posted August 29, 2016 JEFF BLAIR AUGUST 29, 2016, 9:30 AM John Gibbons called his starting pitchers into the manager’s office following Saturday’s win over the Minnesota Twins to deliver a message: Stop it. Shut it. Stow it. OK, so that’s a bit of a simplification and, yeah, maybe a shade dramatic. Got you, right? As one Toronto Blue Jays pitcher said, it was more a matter of the manager reminding all the starting pitchers that the whole six-man rotation setup was brought into place only after all of them signed off on it. “I think Gibby felt there was a little bitching and moaning going on,” was how it was described to me. “Nothing major, but with Aaron (Sanchez) joining the team this week, he wanted to make sure everybody was on the same page.” Sanchez, who was sent down to single-A Dunedin to bide his time as part of an innings-management scheme that has forced the other starters to adjust their routines for extra rest, is scheduled to rejoin the Blue Jays and likely pitch Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles. The advent of the six-man rotation hasn’t quite been the tire fire that some predicted. Marco Estrada has wobbled since then, but there’s some questions whether that’s because of a balky back or, as was the case in his last start, some good pitches being hit. As it turns out, when general manager Ross Atkins said this was uncharted territory, damn it if he wasn’t correct.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 (edited) Yeah. Few people editorialize as much as Blair does. Pretty dishonest way to editorialize because it's presented like a verbatim quote from someone involved. I think it's the "one Blue Jays pitcher" from the previous paragraph though? I also think it's amusing that 'tire fire' has jumped from message boards into actual journalism. Also, Buck's rant on Travis hitting second probably originated from Blair's pre-game segment in which he argued the same thing for seemingly no reason. Yes, let's move the MVP from the optimal spot in the lineup. Edited August 29, 2016 by intentional wok
