Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Barry Davis @SNBarryDavis 35s36 seconds ago Grilli, Barnes and Bolsinger are only #bluejays relievers available tonight. Tulo available off bench in a pinch Dickey starting and only Barnes, Grilli, Bolsinger availables. This will surely end well Scary, but I guess it's neat that we are almost guaranteed to see at least one of Barnes/Bolsinger debut for us.
EdwinsParrot Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 looks like dickey is gonna have a 120+ pitch game tonight also pillar 5th..ohhh boy

Caper Verified Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Another thought exercise. Considering the prospect haul the Jays got for Drew Hutchison what if you decided to liquidate the whole team? Or at least most of it. Get rid of Sanchez, Stroman, Bautista, EE, Donaldson, Tulo, Martin, Dickey, Estrada, Happ, Osuna, Saunders, Cecil, Pillar, Travis and whoever else you may get someone for. You take on money where you need to (Tulo, Martin). Obviously the team would be awul for a few years. But considering what you can get back, would the team be better for say a span of 10 years if they would have otherwise?

What a ridiculous thought. Did I say you would do it again? I didn't say I would do it to begin with. I was curious as to how good it would set the team up for several years. Whether you would gain more in the long run.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Martin on the Sanchez to the bullpen idea.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Martin on the Sanchez to the bullpen idea. That may get Martin in a little trouble but maybe hes looking for some. He made valid points and he cares... those are things you want. It's just unrealistic to have a guy double his innings work load from the previous season. Especially at that number. Shapiro referred to it as the equivalent of walking on the moon for a Starting Pitcher. It is what it is.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Martin on the Sanchez to the bullpen idea. I didn't hear Martin's response, but I'm not surprised he's upset about it, or anyone else for that matter. They have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs this season and they moved their best SP to the pen. Martin's never won a title before (I think), so of course he's going to dislike something that might hurt his chances.

Shapiro referred to it as the equivalent of walking on the moon for a Starting Pitcher. It is what it is. Sale more than doubled his if I remember correctly. From 90 something to over 200. Stroman is going to pitch like 5 times the amount of innings this year compared to last year.

I'd be more understanding of Shatkins if there were a large sample of Sanchez's that ended up injured.

Yeah with Sanchez's velocity and mechanics he could get hurt regardless of innings limits. Why they chose this route rather than working around the innings (skip starts, phantom DL stint, more rest, etc) is strange. I like Shapiro but I think he's wrong here. Well, not wrong about wanting to limit his innings necessarily but wrong in the way they went about doing it.

baseballsss Verified Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Hasn't Stroman pitched less innings than Sanchez combined over their minor league career and MLB? Forget that the Jays are losing their best starter kinda sucks for Sanchez in the fact that he is a legit Cy Young contender and if he goes to the bullpen now highly doubt full he gets it. Ya Ya Ya I know that shouldn't matter but woulda been nice for him to put on his mantle as a big F U to all the haters.

Sanchez has been in the system 2 years longer and didn't lose a season. Only thing I can point to is Stroman threw 130 in 2014. I don't agree with moving Sanchez to the pen though.

The justification afaik is because Stroman threw more in 2014 it's 'safer' for him to keep throwing. He should be should be pushed to the pen once he hits 160IP but nobody is talking about that though.

vilifyingforce Verified Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Stroman threw over 165 in 2014... You're right, I missed his minors IP. My bad. Stroman should get shut down at 200IP then heh.

Sanchez' 139 this year is already a career high. He is also coming directly off a conversion from relief. And he has worse mechanics, by far. Even with moving to the pen he might end up around what, 170? At least they aren't planning on simply shutting him down.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 I would be pretty upset if they plan to use Sanchez back to back days. Every other game if it's absolutely necessary. I would want him babied out of the pen. It's still baffling to me the idea of pitching every 5 days with a full four days is worse for your arm. Than throwing 4-5 times a week at max effort.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Would it really be that hard for the baseball world to talk about pitcher durability in terms of Total Pitches Thrown rather than IP? It's just so antiquated and inaccurate.
