Why don't we just keep Hutch in the pen? If someone gets hurt.. yeah he won't be 100% stretched out but he'd still be able to provide 4-5 innings in a pinch. He and Floyd could easily piggyback.

We're at a point now where we need more talent. The guy has had a good start in AAA, he misses bats.. why not?

The pro of having him up here contributing NOW >>> the con of having him not 100% stretched out when he is called upon.

Just looking at his career stats... he seems to get destroyed the 3rd time through the lineup. Does anyone have any figures that show the average jump in hitter success after incremental times through the lineup?

Sooo is anyone else concerned by the way Bautista's arm looked today on that Goin's play? It looked very, very weak.

His arm looks just as bad as it did last year after he got hurt. There has been a few opportunities where he could have aired it out yet he's lobed the ball in. I don't know if he's scared that he doesn't want to hurt it again in a contract year but it hasn't looked good so far.

We could really use Venditte in the pen vs the Yankees. Im getting sick and tired of the roster construction being hindered on mediocrity at best types hoping to pan out due to no options. It's a real joke.

Venditte/Tepera cant be called up for 10 days from the start of the season, so wednesday would be the earliest he can be recalled.

They can be called up as an injury replacement though.

I was under the impression that wasn't the case, are the season opening option rules different from what is stated below?

"MORALES TO THE DISABLED LIST

The Blue Jays placed left-hander Franklin Morales on the disabled list with left shoulder fatigue. The club made the move retroactive to April 7.

Morales has appeared in two games for Toronto, throwing two-thirds of a scoreless inning. This leaves the Jays short another left-handed reliever at an inopportune time; the left-handed hitting-heavy New York Yankees come to town for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night. Aaron Loup, on the disabled list with a left elbow strain to start the season, isn’t close to returning. “He’s still a little ways off,” said Walker. “He’s playing catch and feeling good; all those things are positive signs but he’s still obviously not in games yet.”

Another complicating factor is the 10-day option window to begin the season doesn’t expire until after Tuesday’s game. The Jays can’t recall players optioned at the start of the season, which includes potential left-handed relief help like Pat Venditte or right-hander Ryan Tepera, who the club likes in the righty-lefty matchups.

Someone not currently on the 40-man roster would have to be added should the Jays wish to make a move in time for Tuesday’s game. This is doable without making a 40-man deletion as 38 of the 40 spots are occupied."

Just wanna say hi everyone! I am new to this forum and don't know if this is appropriate to post this here, but just wanna say go Jays!

I have a question for people though:

Do people think Tulo struggling to start the year, and with his struggles last year, think this may be a permanent thing, and that all the injuries have finally caught up to him over his career?

Defense is still great so even if he's now just a league average hitter he's still a good player (though maybe an overpaid one). That said, I think most will agree he's likely to hit better this year than last. He's been too good for too many years not to be likely to bounce back, and he should still have some good years left, at age 31 now. He also looked good in spring training. Only time will tell though.

Welcome to the board!

No i don't think so, if his injuries caught up to him then he wouldn't be playing this good at short still. I think his timing is off still, he hit a dry spell in Colarado and brought it here and he still hasn't shaken it off yet. Time will tell though

I know the Red Sox are going the be the better team, but I still sort of want them to beat the annoyingly undrafeted Orioles today. Even out the standings a bit.

Weird that he's abandoned the leg kick. Not that I give a damn about leg kicks but I'm in favour of whatever works and it did seem to be working better than what he's doing now.

I think his power comes back and the walk rate returns to his career average but I will say I'm a little scared of the strikeouts. His whiff rate climbed 4 consecutive years prior to this one so it looks like a trend more than a blip. One other thing I've noticed that as a Blue Jay he takes a lot of fastballs right down the middle which is odd.

I really want/thought he could return to vintage Tulo but its looking tougher and tougher.

Is going to be painful having two defensive-only players reaching their mid 30s and paying them +20m a year for the next few years...

Sign Bautista to what he wants and would be hell to be a Jays fan for a little while

Goins and Pillar aren't making 20m a year.

I am more worried if Martin is going start hitting than Tulo as it stands now Martin should be in the ninth spot.

Martin has been ripping line drives that have been unfortunately right at people. He'll be fine

Ummmm.... You made a stupid statement. Stanstag called you on it.

You don't think it's absurd that Tulo, let alone Martin (who is overdue) experience severe offensive regression that they become expensive defensive players?

It's fairly absurd that they become defense only, yes.

Martin's a career 106 wRC+ hitter. We all knew he wasn't going to provide a lot of offense right? Especially as he ages. We should expect him to be a .230-.240 hitter who walks a lot and hits the odd dinger. Nothing more.

Martin in his career has had several seasons near/below average. With his age it isn't far fetched to see him become a sub 100 wRC player again.

Tulo last year was also very much average, which was also the start of a career low/high walk/K rate.

As frustrating as it to watch these two struggle (and they have hit some balls hard right at people) I find comments from some like this 7 games in even more frustrating. Whats the point? Martin and Tulo have both enjoyed far above avg seasons in the not distant past, and even if they regress some, their D combo makes them valuable assets.

After 200 PAs this is a much better discussion, and hopefully its changed to the positive for those two.

I'll give you that on Martin, but Tulo hasn't been good at all with the Jays. And I don't believe in all that mental betrayal ******** he was spewing. He wasn't good with Colorado before the trade either.
