Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Matheny wasted his manager challenge in the first inning with 1 out, re-checking a dubious HBP against McCutchen. Could have saved a baserunner, I guess, but jesus. Seems like part of some conspiracy to make us think Gibbons isn't that bad.

BTS Community Moderator Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Liriano is f***ing dealing, and Waino looks bad.
jerry Verified Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Not sold on Stroman being a number one and not sold on Osuna being a number one reliever.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I'm curious as to what these numbers are that say Smoak should play over Colabello. Is it just babip? Because every other metric from last year has Cola ahead of Smoak and against RHP as well. Smoak walks more and strikes out less, didn't have an insanely high BABIP (7th highest in something like 16k+ player seasons for Cola), is better (though not good) defensively, had a much better spring (close to 1:1 BB:K instead of 1:6 BB:K).

I have no issue with this decision. Pillar leading off? That's another story

Well yeah, rewarding someone if you have a good idea that he has no chance of repeating those numbers is kind of pointless. Colabello's BABIP in August was .481 and in Sept/Oct was .469. He looked bad in the spring and he has major regression written all over him. While Smoak at least had a good spring and a power/walk combo that might be sustainable. I don't even blame Gibbons here to be honest. Much like with Navarro last year, he's playing his favorites based on who is on the roster. The Jays should not have started the season with two 1B on the team. They had to pick one and roll with him. They played the fence, and now the bench is worse off, and we might have to suffer through a month or so of Cola sucking before changes are made.

Having a guy like Smoak/Colabello on the bench ready to PH is not a terrible situation. This team desperately needs a legit 2nd CF option though... If Pillar has a day-to-day injury we're gonna have to see Carrera/Saunders in CF. BARF Carrera should not be on this roster.
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Obviously regression is inevitable, but I don't think Collabello falls off a cliff like some people. I could see something like a .270/.340/.420 statline from him. Last year the Smoak/ Collabello platoon put up 30 hr and 100 RBI. I'm comfortable with either guy starting.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Liriano is on a roll.. 9Ks through 5. Now if the Cards bats would wake up and give Liriano a tougher time..
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 That Cardinals lineup doesn't inspire any confidence. Plus Liraiano is mowing them down.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Also to note, Tommy Pham left with an oblique injury.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Number 10 for Liriano! But this may be near his last inning-- 86 pitches so far through 6.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Cold weather is hurting the offense in Pits.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 This is the most Liriano game ever.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 an unfriendly ump today and this game is very different (not that I'm saying the ump is doing badly). The Cards love to watch close pitches
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Kolten is so not a True Card He's a nice name
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Cola hello might be better in LF than Matt Holiday. Shocking to see a team like the Cards still leaving him out there
