Hey, What are our options on Gavin?

If we decide to give Sanchez the 5 slot, are we able to keep Gavin?

If someone other than Floyd is the 5th starter, then it is almost guaranteed Floyd is in the pen.

I'm guessing Floyd in the rotation, Hutch and Chavez in the pen and Sanchez is starting at Buffalo.

There's no way Sanchez will be in Buffalo. He'll either be in the rotation or in the pen on the MLB team.

Why not? He has more value in the rotation and right now we have enough arms in the pen to close our games.

Ideal situation would be Sanchez in Buffalo for a few months and then continue the season in Toronto.

He SHOULD be in Buffalo. I think there is certainly a chance, but likely in the pen.

Sanchez should be in Buffalo waiting the eventual time when Floyd's arm falls off considering the last time he pitched over 54 innings in a season was 4 years ago.

He has more value on the major league team in either role than in Buffalo. He won't make 34 starts anyway based on inning totals in the past, so he's gonna be in the pen at some point. If he starts out there, you can stretch him out mid-season if the need arises.

In an ideal world Sanchez is in AAA until June starting every 5 days. He's never thrown more than 92.1 innings in a season and around 66 innings had the oblique/lat injury. Let's see him get to 100 innings in AAA and then come to Toronto and throw another 35+ in the bullpen.

If we can get 7 starts out of Floyd for the 1M salary then great, if you get more that's fantastic and if you get less that's why you have Chavez, Hutch and Hernandez. This is the first year in the last four or five that we have any starting pitching depth and we have a pitcher who was rushed to the MLB in Sanchez who could really use some AAA work if the team ever wants him to be an OK big league starter.

There's a very good chance we'll need him as a starter at some point this season (teams typically use 8-10 starters a year). If he's in the pen and the need for him to start arises (which is typically an abrupt need), then you're going to send him down and stretch him out over 3-4 starts....that means its going to take 20+ days for him to be ready to be in the Jays rotation (assuming the transition doesn't hurt his arm and all goes well). That means you'll need 3-4 committee starts (or starts from other AAA guys) in the meantime. I'm not sure his value as our 4th best bullpen arm is worth it...especially if the long term goal is for him to start.

I guess if Sanchez is your #6 guy (first guy to step in when needed), and Hutch is in AAA, you can use him while you stretch Sanchez out. That's likely the best case scenario...and is based on the assumption that Hutch is better than the average AAA schmuck or committee approach.

Floyd looks good so far and the beginning of the season will be a extension of spring try outs for the 5th. SP roll. 2 more weeks...........

Osuna sucked too, come on man.

Alright - Lets say Sanchez starts the season in Buffalo and Floyd doesn't completely fall apart and the Bullpen stays relativity intact - Is it worth Sanchez staying the whole year; or at least majority in Buffalo?

Won't happen. Injuries and suckage guaranteed to occur among the pitching staff. Even if Sanchez starts the year in Buffalo, he will be back in Toronto for a good part of the year.

Sanchez is 23, if he is going to be a starter long term, the time is now to see if he can make the grade.

I guess you were out golfing after the all star game

He's obviously being sarcastic in reference to the idea of Sanchez as setup man. Storen is going to be the closer, with Osuna/Cecil as 7/8. Sanchez would be, at best, our 4th reliever.

Floyd 5th SP

Sanchez RP 7th inning

Chavez long RP

Hutchison AAA

Very much agree. Sanchez may be good for 2 innings as well, try to stretch him out a bit.

Floyd has pitched < 100 innings in the past 4 years. If he is 5th SP, it will be for a limited time only until he drops dead, or a radical Muslim gets him.

you should probably drop the last 6 words of your post. They really add nothing.

Floyd is my 5th starter because he'll be the first injury and unavailable if pitching out of AAA. Sanchez starts in AAA and comes in when Floyd or someone else is injured. People talk about how Sanchez will have innings limit, what about Floyd? Hes thrown less innings in like 4 yrs combined than Sanchez last year??

The difference is that the team doesn't care about Floyd. And he wouldn't want a limit anyway. It's in his best interest to pitch 160 innings and hit the free agent market.

And you didn't even mention his age. He's 33 year old. He's basically trying to ring out whatever he can from his career and as you mentioned, earn another paycheck next year. Otherwise, he might be flat out done. Neither he nor the team would benefit from treating him with kid gloves. There's no development here. He either still has something to offer or he doesn't.
