So what are the SP5 sentiments so far? I haven't seen all the games but the vibe I get around the internet is Floyd/Sanchez > Chavez > Hutch.

How was Storen today? Last time I saw him he was iffy but brute forced himself through a scoreless inning.

Hutch has out pitched Chavez so far I think.

Still lots of time, but it's basically... Floyd/Sanchez > Hutch > Chavez >>>>> Penny and Carmona Edited by Spanky99

I think we have to try Floyd as 5th given his contract. Lets see if he is healthy again.

We know what we already have pretty much with Chavez and Sanchez (despite hundreds of pages of debate on here).

Not sure on sending Sanchez to AAA though. In a "win" year I'd hate to lose that arm in the pen against RHP middle innings although Storen gives us more flexibility.

It can go either way but stuffing Hutch/Chavez/Sanchez whoever in to the BP seems like a bad idea. I just prefer having a capable starter ready to go when someone goes down. I understand Chavez could be that guy but a long arm out of the pen is meant for when Dickey blows up in the 1st inning giving up 6 runs, not as a back up when someone tears an elbow. Lack of depth options has historically killed the Jays more than anything over the past decade (minus last season).

Perhaps if they do stash someone like Chavez in the BP they could keep him stretched out by letting them continue throwing in the bullpen or something. I know it sounds silly but it could keep him stretched out and also help in the BP. For Hutch or Sanchez it might be better to have them in AAA to develop. If you think they have developed all they are going to you could do the same there.

Floyd will be the 5th starter and Sanchez will be in the pen. That's my best case as I have heard nothing about sending Sanchez down, and it doesn't make sense to have Floyd and Chavez both in the pen.

You want to win in 2016 without demoting Sanchez? Then he's in the bullpen.

So pen is:

Storen

Osuna

Cecil

Sanchez

Chavez

Biagini

Loup/Choate/Venditte?

Aside from SP depth, yes.

Yea there was a lot to like about Hendriks. He finally knew how to get big leaguers out and they trade him. Not to mention he tossed like 5 shutout innings after Dickey blew up against the Royals in a postseason game, he could easily spot start. He was worth the risk alone of trying to move him back to a SP role imo, I don't see how Chavez really brings a lot more value for us.

I believe that trade was made before the team grabbed Happ. Not sure if the negotiations ran concurrently (they probably did). Looked like a defensible move at the time, but I still wasn't hot on losing four years of Hendriks for a year of swingman/SP4. Chavez will be valuable to the team over the season, but I'm still not sure he was worth it.

Not saying he should get a rotation spot because of optics. It's really just that I thought the move was wasteful then and that my opinion hasn't really changed.

The FO probably views 2016 as a sort of "one-year" window before re-tooling for 2017 and on. One could argue that losing Hendriks was worth fortifying some more innings for the team, especially with a rotation that can only realistically be described as adequate - all right. I'm not sure I disagree.

This trade is kind of grey.

The Hendriks trade will look that much sillier if Chavez isn't used as a starter.

Not sure I agree. SP depth is a must for a winning team. I'm fine with him starting in the pen (ala Estrada, Marco last year).

Floyd in the rotation, Chavez & Sanchez in the pen, Hutch stretched out in AAA (in the event of a SP injury). That works for me.

Do you guys actually think Gibby is going to put Sanchez as a 6th inning man? If last year taught me anything about his thought process, I'm expecting Storen to be treated like Lowe and Sanchez will be the set up man.

As a Storen fantasy owner I hope that doesn't happen, but I think you're right and Storen ends up the ugly stepchild in the pen....can't wait for the inevitable meltdown when Storen completely looses his s***!

You're awful man

Real life > Fantasy life.

Osuna owner

Soriano gets some PEDs and performs marginally worse than Sanchez in a 6th inning role or Biagini steps up. Big league team loses nothing.

Soriano needs a visa and some PEDs in a hurry....

Drives me crazy that a 'setup' man is even a thing, but yea you're probably right cause Sanchez throws 'heat' will be a late inning reliever.

Gibby would be correct in doing so. Sanchez has a career 2.93 FIP in the 'pen and Storen projects for a 3.57 FIP this year. More strikeouts don't change the fact that Storen is a markedly worse reliever.

Righties hit .147/.222/.175 against Sanchez and have never hit a HR or 3B, that's including as a starter. He and Cecil are as deadly as any pairing in MLB if deployed correctly. Will they be? I'd say not usually, but you never know.

Great, except a scrub left handed bat off the bench can still tee one up against him. That's not an ideal set up man, he's a right handed specialist and should be used as one. Storen's projected numbers are skewed, he preformed very differently after giving the closing job to Pyschobon and it's still up in the air what his job will be. If Storen is closing, Osuna is your set up man or vice versa.
