Blue Jays agree to minor-league deal with Soriano

The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a minor-league deal with right-handed reliever Rafael Soriano on Sunday.

Rafael Soriano gets 750K if in majors on blue Jays minors deal.

Shapiro mind "Osuna out of the bullpen is a ******** idea. For that reason I don't like AA"

Low-risk move. Could be high reward for the Jays if he rediscovers his form. Nice to see Atkins/Shapiro building up depth--AA would never do this.

Holy crap, can we quit with this false narrative? Every team brings in minor pieces to compete for jobs. Did you forget about Colabello, Valencia, and Hendriks last year?

Anyways, Soriano's velocity was down to 90.7 last year, but maybe some health will help him pick it up a bit. Apparently he looked good in winter league.

Shapiro and Atkins showing again that they are able to add value late in the signing period with low risk/high reward signings.

Hey Ang...did you see Soriano pitch in the DWL this year?

This is a great little move. He was good in 2014, hurt last year. Seems like there's a decent chance that he could still be an above replacement level reliever.

If a move like this could get Osuna out of the bullpen and back to working as a starter then it'll pay off with more than just a win this year. Great move

Doubtful in a contending year. This is a depth signing, nothing more. He's next to Delabar on the reliever depth chart.

But if Soriano makes the team and Ben Rowen is never an MLB Blue Jay, then I'll be very very sad.

I like Ben Rowen potential.

Regular

18IP, 4 walks, 13 Ks, 2.32 FIP

Fastball 92 Mph. He looked ok. Hard hit very often and high babip for that reason (22 hits - 18IP)

guess he hasnt fully recovered his velocity, maybe he can notch it up a tick this spring with some weighted balls. I like this deal

Were there lots of HRs?

Rafael pitched at Estadio Quisqueya (Petco Park lol)....Touch stadium to hit a HR, but he allowed 2

What the hell were Colabello, Smoak, Santana, etc last year bud?

Last year we signed Johan Santana, Chris Dickerson, Dayan Viciedo, Randy Wolf, Jeff Francis, Phil Coke, Luke Scott, Ramon Santiago, Luis Perez, Andy Dirks, Albers, Kalish, Barton, Fox, Lopez, Gindl, Peguero, Copeland, ... I think you get the point.

Not even counting Hendriks, Colabello, Carrera, Valencia.

I never had issue with AA's minor league signings. It was the back end of his 40/25 man that was an issue. Carrying 4 or 5 catchers at points. Several relievers in the minors but on the 40 (I think there were 5 or 6 at points). It doesn't do much to have minor league signings if you will only use them if there are 60 day DL spots

Seems like everyone forgets all those invitees .....

Ya it's because Shapiro said we had no depth so everyone just erased these players from their minds. It's true we had no depth because all their contracts expired or we moved on from them but that's what the off-season is for. You just collect a pile of s*** at the beginning of the season and hope it works out.

Floyd was a good signing but guys like Carmona and Penny are pure s*** and people act like Shapiro did something no one else could have done lol.

Yeah for all the talk of depth, the off-season hasn't done anything particularly remarkable in terms of addressing it. For the most part, it's just been bringing back guys who were here before and some fringy roster candidates on the side. Then there's been moves like Storen/Revere which don't address depth at all but just shift it around. I mean I have no problem with the moves overall but at the end of the day, this team still doesn't have exceptional depth. There's better pitching depth than there was last year and mostly mediocre depth elsewhere which is par for the course.
