Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Ortiz pulls this kind of s*** every single year in spring training He does?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Ya. At first I saw this as all business and didn't mind his comments. I'm a big fan of his. But they are starting to grate on me for the timing and some of the other reasons mentioned. I like him calling out Rogers in a way, but I want this team to win and the focus on that. As far as him giving the Jays a hometown discount that's only in hindsight. He got a big long term deal after one monster year. There was risk on both sides. Meh, who cares. When they say playball on the 3rd of April, they all play for each other.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 He does? Yes. Bitching to the Boston media about his contract anyway. Complaining about the front office.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Yes. Bitching to the Boston media about his contract. Hasn't he been going a year at a time the last few years?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Hasn't he been going a year at a time the last few years? Yes. That's what he was always bitter about. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2014/01/ortiz_rumbling_about_contract_status.html

Hope Edwin doesn't join in the chorus. April 3rd can't come soon enough for me. Coming to see them in TOR against LAD May 6,7,8th.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Probably cares more about a longer term (more guaranteed money) Because of the age factor he might get more money overall on a four year term. 4/120 vs 5/100-110.

gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Huh?? He's more likely to get $30M a year on anything under a five year term. If he gets five years, there's no way he gets $150M. I'm not saying he'll get 4/120, but the i think a four year term is his best chance at overall money. For all i know, the Red Sox or the Yankees might go full retard.

Cyborg Verified Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 The team would surely take an extra year if the overall contract costs less. That makes zero sense Gruber.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Anyone else love the shirt Atkins was wearing today? Better style than Alex that's for sure.

Please don't imply that you're surprised. I know you don't have emotions but I'm letting you know that you were doing it.

Not if they feel he'll be basically a 41 year old crippled DH that will be performing well below the norm and the difference in overall money is roughly 10M. It's not totally crazy to think management would rather pay a bit more for a productive player than be handcuffed financially in the fourth / fifth year where that $20-25M can be utilized a lot better in 2020-1.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 I find he looks very stylish while also looking very nerdy, giving him a rare kind of geek chic. Feels like you've been waiting forever for an excuse to use that descriptor.

I feel like Gruber probably doesn't work for a bank or any place that needs him to deal with money

Change your numbers to 4 years 100M (4 x 25) vs 5 years 110M (5 x 22) or something similar and your point will be better made (I understand the point you're TRYING to make - that shorter terms at higher annual average value can make sense. But no one would ever pay more TOTAL money for fewer years. Which is what your numbers show. That's why people are harassing you)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Would anyone do 5 years 150M if it was restructured to include the 2016 season that's about to start? Would Bautista do that? He gets an increase for 2016 but we avoid paying him at age 41.

Rogers is still spending the same amount of money.
