That is actually probably the least interesting decision. Should be Storen so he proves he's a good save collector and declines the QO.

The market for Closerz this year he could have a mediocre season a decline the QO get us that pick

I really doubt he'd decline a QO unless the amount changes.

Need to keep Osuna arb down too.

There is lots of evidence that should push you in the other direction.

How dare the Jays make decisions to try to win in 2015-16 at the expense of what a pitcher with a past injury who hasn't come close to pitching 100 innings in any year might be in 2018 or 2020!

The Jays needed Osuna in the pen last year. Great decision in hindsight even if it came along with gifting roster spots to a bunch of other rookies. If the Jays have enough BP depth in March, great, stretch him out in AA. If not, he belongs in the pen on the MLB roster in 2016.

Osuna is not that much of a generational talent that the Jays should sacrifice needs for the 2016 MLB roster during the window of opportunity for his development.

No but he's not a generational talent as a reliever either. It's ultimately a low stakes decision.

Gregor Chisolm calls it the most interesting decision because Gregor Chisolm isn't a very good writer. The Jays didn't take a disgruntled ex closer off Washinston's hands to just make him a disgruntled ex closer here. He's here to provide a good high leverage performance while also collecting saves. That much should be obvious to anyone not tying themselves into knots pretending they have something interesting to write.

There needs to be more discussion about stretching Osuna out to be a starter. The fact that there isn't concerns me.

I'll ask this again. Does anyone think they Jays are reluctant to stretch him out as a starter because he has inverted W mechanics (which may have lead to his previous TJS)?

Agree totally

He should go in to ST with plans for him compete for a rotation spot along with Hutch, Chavez and Sanchez

Great. Now we're all tempted to read them. LOL

This is the first one I read lol

Osuna has never shown anything in the past as a starter. ERAs were horrible. I also heard that his camp is not happy with the Storen move as they were looking at Osuna remaining as closer. He would reach FA at 25 and be a premier closer. What kind of money would that mean? Storen is best used as a closer even though I believe his best days are over. I think we just made a mess out of the situation by trading a great lead off hitter who we controlled for two more years for a so-so pitcher who is a free agent at the end of the season.

Can't see the Jays offering Storen a QO. He isn't going to turn down over 17 million on a 1 year deal.

Yeah the qualifying offer is going to be pretty high next offseason... Who knows though. If he has a great year he could be looking at a 4/50 contract at least.

I just don't have any idea whether it would be the smart move or not. His mechanics and ability to avoid injury is something I don't really know much about. Does he project to be a good starter?

I am sure the FO has discussed it internally.

Not with a QO attached and Chapman+Jansen in FA. Who knows if the QO system is even in place by next year.

I think he would have to get stretched out in the minors first before competing for a spot.

It should be Storen, and the order should come from the front office. You save arb money on Osuna while at the same time giving Storen the best probability of being in a position to turn down a QO.

You don't offer a QO to a guy unless you're comfortable paying him that amount. Mark Shapiro has said this verbatim. The idea of having Storen on the books next year @ ~$15M is highly unsettling. I think you guys are vastly overstating how big of a consideration that will be.

Agreed, but the only way it's even a remote possibility is if he saves 40 games. If he saves 40 with a 2.5 ERA, you at least have some internal discussion.

I also really don't think one less year of saves is going to affect Osuna's arb as much as you guys think. He'll still be save-collecting again by the time he even goes to arb.
