He seems like a good fit to slide into LF regardless, but if Saunders seems healthy they can battle it out or of course platoon which would make more sense. I'm not sure what he's looking for, but I've always felt like AJax is a very useful player on any team, does anyone think the Jays could make a play for him, despite them not being in the rumor mill at all lately? Would be an interesting target IMO.

You improve where you can. If Jackson can be had under reasonable terms, he's a great acquisition. He's a great defensive outfielder. He gives you the flexibility to be more patient with Saunders and Pompey and decreases the likelihood of ever seing 'Zeke again. Inflation seems to be affecting relievers more than position players right now so he might provide more value than whatever reliever can be signed for the same money. Of course, I have no idea what he's looking for nor where he wants to play but at least on the surface there's no reason to lift one's nose at this.

Pompey likely outperforms AJ, for much less. Put whatever money left in the bullpen.

I don't think you know what "likely" means.

It works exactly like that.

Agree to disagree then

In my point of view if you have one area of an organization that's weaker than the other the weaker area will drag the stonger one down.

Successfully teams and organization are well rounded and there are limited results in improving an area you are really strong in.

But I just have years of corporate management experience I haven't memorized fangraphs so what do I know

No, it doesn't.

WAR is not a perfect stat.

If the Jays had a 40 WAR pitching staff and a 0 WAR offense they would likely not perform as good as a balanced team with 40 WAR. You aren't allowing many runs with a 40 WAR pitching staff but you aren't scoring any runs with 9 Josh Thole's or worse in your batting order.

usually a team with 40 WAR is easily making the playoffs. An unbalanced team with 40 WAR pitching/0 WAR hitting doesn't make the playoffs.

We don't need Austin Jackson's 2.3 WAR. (and I doubt he repeats that in 2016) We already have a LF who projects for that in Saunders. And Pompey could be better.

That WAR would be better off as pitching WAR.

Yeah and how about the year prior? He hit .256/.308/.347 for a .655 OPS

No thanks.

And the year before that he was a 3 win player and the year before that even better so 2014 definitely looks like the outlier. Steamer projects him at one win if he gets about half a season's playing time and that seems about right, maybe even conservative.

Guys, the OF depth chart right now is:

1. Bautista

2. Pillar

3. Pompey (probably fine, but 23 and has 146 MLB PA)

4. Saunders (just had his meniscus removed and missed pretty much the entire season)

5. replacement level trash

The team is one injury away from Saunders being forced to play every day, and the 4th OF being some combination of players from the 'replacement level trash' pile. There are only four outfielders in the org that are any good, and two of them will have huge error bars on their 2016 projection. OF is not an area of depth right now.

It is very likely that a group of players that isn't currently in the top-4 gets at least 300 PA next year. Giving them to Jackson instead of Junior Lake or Ezequiel Carrera adds wins.

You've become quite salty in 2016 Robert. What gives?

He could be good value, but I'd like to see Pompey get a shot in the majors and I'd also like to spend any available money on pitching.

Pretty sure Saunders is penciled in as the starting LF in the minds of Gibbons/Atkins/Shapiro. Don't think Pompey will start the year with the team, but will be in Buffalo playing everyday. More likely Lake as the 4th OF.

To get a feel for how important it is to have depth beyond the 4th OF, you really just need to have been paying attention to this team.

2015

pre-season Top 4 = Bautista, Pillar, Pompey, Saunders

time in OF for Pennington, Tolleson, Valencia, Carrera, Goins, Diaz, and Colabello = 182 games, 1118.2 innings

* team had to trade for Revere mid-season

2014

pre-season Top 4 = Bautista, Cabrera, Rasmus, Sierra

time in OF for Encarnacion, Mayberry, Reimold, Diaz, Tolleson, Gillespie, Gose, Mastroianni, Glenn, Pillar, Pompey = 202 games, 1247.33 innings

2013

pre-season top-4 = Bautista, Cabrera, Rasmus, Davis

time in OF for Bonifacio, Gose, Sierra, Pillar = 150 games, 1037.32 innings

We're talking about over 1000 innings per season being played by guys who weren't in the opening day 4-man OF rotation. Someone gets hurt, and the carousel of replacement-level garbage revs up. As things stand now, those innings are going to Junior Lake and Ezequiel Carrera. There is going to be plenty of playing time for Austin Jackson this year.

All the more reason to sign Jackson. Junior Lake is awful.

All the Pompey nut huggers need a reality check. There is a very real chance Pompey sucks in 2016 and Saunders is a huge question mark. For a team that plans on competing, pushing Zeke and Lake farther down the depth chart really adds some stability to the OF.

I think Pompey gets the chance to start at the start of the season and for that reason i don't think Jackson would sign with us to be a bench player. He is going to be looking for a place the will give him the starting spot and that is not here.

This is more of an issue than should the Jays want him. That much should be obvious.

the comment of signing jackson is useless without attaching a price at which you want to sign him. I would prefer cespedes is dollars don't matter.
