For all those despaired by the Evan White pick, this is a 20 team league and he plays in Seattle.

 

With borderline power for a 1B. Better IRL than fantasy.

A legitimate five tool first baseman capable of having five 60-grade tools

 

While the traction for White is building, he remains one of the most misunderstood players in the minors. The narrative around White is that he plays good defense (true), hits for average (true), runs well (true when healthy) but doesn’t hit for power (false).

 

White is best known for his Bellinger-esque ability to play centerfield for Team USA, while displaying gold glove level first base defense. That hasn’t gone away, but since August 2018, a change in approach at the plate has seen him start launching baseballs into the air. He finished 2018 hitting .383/.449/.676 from Aug.1 on with 19 XBH in 27 games. While his 18 home runs, .195 ISO and 132 wRC+ in an injury shortened 92 games in 2019 are solid (32 HR per 162 pace), it doesn’t mention that his home ballpark (Arkansas) was the toughest on right-handed power in the entire minors. In fact, White had a .718 OPS at home in 44 games with just five home runs. But on the road in a pitching friendly league, White had a .940 OPS with 13 HR in 48 games — that’s a 44 home run per 162 pace.

 

Additionally, White showcased his power at the futures game by having the hardest hit ball of the event with a 112.2 MPH exit velo that would have been in the 99.5th percentile of hardest balls hit in the MLB. Oh yeah…and he hasn’t even seen a juiced ball yet.

 

I do have some concerns about White. While his strikeout rate is a manageable 23 percent, his BB/9 dropped from a career average of around 10 percent to 7.3 percent. My main concern is that he is injury prone. He’s missed time with a myriad of minor injuries mainly occurring in his hamstrings, sapping his strength and speed.

 

But at the end of the day, you have a guy who displays hit tools regarded as between 55-60 grade, with a solid approach, a chance at genuine 60 game power with room on his athletic 6-3 205 frame for good weight, gold glove level defense and ability to play outfield with a plus arm and 60 grade speed. It’s hard not to watch White and think Paul Goldschmidt or Cody Bellinger (who he’s long drawn comps to) is the real upside.

When the Mariners took White out of the University of Kentucky with the 17th overall pick in the 2017 Draft, they thought they were getting an advanced and mature player on both sides of the ball. He's lived up to those expectations, making All-Star teams in each of his first two full seasons and going to the Futures Game in 2019. The Mariners were so confident in his future that they signed him to a six-year contract last November, making him just the fourth player in history to sign a long-term deal before reaching the Majors -- and the first to do so without experience above Double-A.

 

White has shown an advanced approach at the plate since entering pro ball with the ability to hit for average and post solid on-base numbers as well. He makes a ton of hard contact and sends line drives to all fields with the chance to be a plus hitter. Both White and the Mariners knew his power would start to come, and when he lowered his hands at the plate late in 2018, he added leverage to his swing, leading to more over-the-fence power in 2019 and there's likely more to come as he continues to mature. While he hasn't been a base-stealing threat, White has excellent speed and is an outstanding baserunner.

 

In addition to his offensive profile, White is by far the best defensive first base prospect in the game and will immediately become a Gold Glove contender when he reaches the big leagues. His plus range, outstanding footwork, soft hands and strong arm earn him votes as the best overall defensive prospect in the game at any position, with some believing he deserves an 80 fielding grade. With his contract in hand, the path is paved for White to become one of the better all-around first basemen in the big leagues.

I love L54, but I hope he picks faster than he did in BBDL. We were going along at a nice clip here.

 

L54 timed out on the draft in BBDL yesterday and since we are using auto-draft, it auto picked Wilson Ramos for him.. It was a long 8 plus hours though... :(
